Cordyceps militaris (CM), a well-known parasitic fungus that grows on the larvae of Lepidoptera, has a variety of pharmacological activities. However, little is known about its safe dosage for animals, including pigs. To explore its effect on intestinal health and evaluate its safe dosage, 30 weaned pigs were randomly allotted to five groups and fed with a basal diet supplemented with different doses of CM for 42 days. The results showed that CM supplementation at 100 mg/kg increased the average daily weight gain (ADG) and significantly decreased the ratio of feed intake to gain (F:G) in the w

Cordyceps species have been known since long as a multi-utility ethnomedicinal herbal in Korea, China and Japan. It has been reported to exhibit a number of properties such as anti-oxidative, anti-cancer, antiinflammatory, anti-diabetic, and anti-obesity effects. In a previously conducted study, we had demonstrated that the ethanol extract of Cordyceps bassiana was able to suppress the production of interleukin (IL)-12 and interferon (IFN)-gamma in macrophages and T lymphocytes. In this study, we were able to further explore the molecular basis of its inhibitory mechanism using a butanol fract

Cordyceps militaris has long been used in prescriptions of traditional Chinese medicine as a tonic for the treatment of metabolic syndrome. Cordycepin with proven immunomodulatory, antitumor, and hepatoprotective properties is the main active metabolite of C militaris. Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases in which the body is unable to regulate blood sugar levels. Hence, we hypothesized that cordycepin can normalize blood sugar levels and improve the indicators of diabetes. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible effects of cordycepin from C militaris on diabetes in

Cordycepin (3'-deoxyadenosine) is a nucleoside analogue and biosynthesised by Cordyceps militaris, an entomopathogenic fungus. In this study, an epigenetic modifier was applied to static liquid cultures to enhance cordycepin production. C. militaris was cultured in a static liquid culture, and valproic acid (VPA), a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor, was supplemented in order to modifying the epigenetic status. Gene regulatory network was explored to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying cordycepin production. 50 micromolar of VPA enhanced cordycepin production by 41.187% via the u

Extracts derived from Cordyceps have been demonstrated to possess various pharmacological effects, including immunomodulatory, antitumor, hypoglycemic, and antioxidant activities. This study was aimed to clarify the role of CS-P, a polysaccharide fraction isolated from Cordyceps sobolifera, in modulating nephrofunctional damage in a rat model of endotoxemia. CS-P (500 mg/kg body weight) was orally administered to rats for 4 weeks before the peritoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 10 mg/kg body weight). Pre-treatment with CS-P significantly attenuated the deleterious renal functions ca

Cordyceps militaris is a medicinal mushroom and has been extensively used as a traditional medicine in East Asia. After the chrysalis seeds are matured and harvested, the spent substrate of C. militaris still contains active ingredients but is usually discarded as waste. This study aimed to determine the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of C. militaris spent substrate extract and its inhibitory activity on the Malassezia commensal yeasts that can cause dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Active substances in the spent substrate of C. militaris were extracted using a hot water extra

Gliocladinins A (1) and B (2), two new p-terphenyl derivatives, have been isolated from solid cultures of an isolate of Gliocladium sp. that colonizes Cordyceps sinensis. The structures of these compounds were determined mainly by analysis of their NMR spectroscopic data. In standard disk assays, compounds 1 and 2 showed modest antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538). In addition, these compounds displayed inhibitory effects on the growth of two human tumor cell lines, HeLa and HCT116.

Cordyceps sinensis is a fungus that has been used for over 2,000 years in China as a treatment for a variety of conditions including infectious diseases. The available evidence suggests a hypothesis that any efficacy of C. sinensis as an anti-infective therapeutic would be related to a role as an activator of innate immune responses. The objectives of this study were first to investigate the ability of C. sinensis to activate pro-inflammatory responses in macrophages in vitro and induce protective responses against intracellular pathogens in vivo, and second to characterize a method of action.
