Corneal oedema and endothelial cell loss after iris-clip lens implantation.

Lens implantation as a form of replacement surgery has some clear advantages over other forms of aphakic correction. The most feared complication of this type of operation is bullous keratopathy. A short-term study was carried out in two comparable groups of patients to assess corneal oedema and endothelial cell loss after simple cataract extraction and after iris-clip lens implantation following intracapsular extraction as a primary procedure. All patients were randomly chosen to have one or other procedure. The results indicate that lens implantation causes greater postoperative corneal oede

Rapid Corneal Endothelial Cell Loss After PreserFlo MicroShunt Surgery: A Case Report.

We describe a rare case of rapid endothelial cell loss after PreserFlo MicroShunt (PMS) surgery, necessitating tube removal and conversion to trabeculectomy. An 85-year-old female patient with advanced bilateral primary open-angle glaucoma underwent PMS surgery in the left eye. The surgery was uneventful, and the initial postoperative course was stable, with intraocular pressure (IOP) maintained between 6 mmHg and 14 mmHg without glaucoma medication. However, despite stable IOP control, corneal endothelial cell density (CECD) declined rapidly postoperatively, decreasing from 2075 cells/mm² pre

Corneal endothelial cell loss, cystoid macular edema, and iris-supported intraocular lenses.

Endothelial cell loss, persistent cystoid macular edema and a chronic low-grade uveitis may complicate intracapsular cataract extraction combined with iris supported intraocular lenses. Clinical examination of 19 eyes of 17 patients, at 1.1 to 5 years after cataract surgery, and correlation with wide field specular microscopy and fluorescein angiography, documents this problem. The mean central corneal endothelial cell count was 497 cells/mm2 (standard deviation, 119). In ten cases, focal edema was localized to the corneal periphery. Cystoid macular edema was present in all but one case. Inter

Delayed Corneal Endothelial Cell Loss Following CyPass Stent Insertion: A Case Report.

We report a case of delayed corneal endothelial cell loss (CECL) following CyPass® stenting in a 71-year-old female with normal-tension glaucoma. CECL is a known complication of the CyPass® stent, which resulted in its withdrawal from the market in 2018; however, the mechanism for CECL is often attributed to mechanical endothelial disruption from poorly positioned stents. In this case, our patient suffered around a 40% CECL, which first started five years following stent implantation and responded well to ripasudil therapy. This occurred despite it being optimally positioned, prompting an alte

Corneal Endothelial Cell Loss From Anterior Chamber Paracentesis in a Porcine Model.

This study aimed to develop a porcine eye model used to predict corneal endothelial cell loss (ECL) associated with anterior chamber paracentesis (ACP) in a healthy adult human cornea. To assess the average wound area and ECL created by needle punctures, a 27-gauge (27G) needle was inserted at the limbus of a porcine eye through the clear cornea and into the anterior chamber. Needle-punctured areas were immediately collected, stained, and photographed with a digital light microscope. The wound areas were quantified in square millimeters (mm2) and then extrapolated to predict ECL in a healthy a

The effect of the selected factors on corneal endothelial cell loss following phacoemulsification.

INTRODUCTION: Corneal endothelium is a single layer of cells, which do not regenerate. Damage to the endothelium can take place in the course of certain diseases and after intraocular operations. When the number of endothelial cells decreases, corneal decompensation can occur. Pre- and postoperative measurement of the number of the corneal endothelial cells can help assess the degree of corneal damage during the surgery. PURPOSE: To compare the effect of various factors, such as: sex, age, corneal incision, intraocular pressure, cataract density, visual acuity and surgeon's experience on corn

Localized Trichiasis Causing Focal Full-Thickness Corneal Edema, Endothelial Cell Loss, and Corneal Scarring Requiring Penetrating Keratoplasty.

The purpose of the study was to report a case of focal trichiasis causing full-thickness corneal edema, scarring, and endothelial cell loss requiring penetrating keratoplasty (PK). A 66-year-old male was referred for trichiasis of the right upper eyelid corresponding to an area of full-thickness corneal edema. No keratic precipitates or guttata was noted. Specular microscopy showed diffuse endothelial cell loss. He was treated with topical steroids and acyclovir with epilation of lashes. Anterior chamber paracentesis was negative for varicella-zoster virus, cytomegalovirus, and herpes simplex

Corneal Endothelial Cell Loss During Uneventful Cataract Surgery in Hispanics Versus Non-Hispanics.

PURPOSE: Limited information exists on the possible effects of ethnicity on corneal endothelial cell parameters and their changes during cataract surgery. Thus, we evaluated corneal endothelial cell density (ECD) and endothelial cell loss (ECL) during surgery for senile cataract in Hispanic and non-Hispanic White adults. METHODS: This retrospective study included 312 eyes of 227 patients ≥50 years who underwent phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation for senile cataract. Preoperatively and 1 to 2 months after surgery, specular microscopy was performed to measure ECD, coefficien

Development of a Noninvasive, Laser-Assisted Experimental Model of Corneal Endothelial Cell Loss.

Nd:YAG lasers have been used to perform noninvasive intraocular surgery, such as capsulotomy for several decades now. The incisive effect relies on the optical breakdown at the laser focus. Acoustic shock waves and cavitation bubbles are generated, causing tissue rupture. Bubble sizes and pressure amplitudes vary with pulse energy and position of the focal point. In this study, enucleated porcine eyes were positioned in front of a commercially available Nd:YAG laser. Variable pulse energies as well as different positions of the focal spots posterior to the cornea were tested. Resulting lesions
