Behçet's disease is a multisystem inflammatory disorder. Cardiovascular involvement is rare but may present with various manifestations, resulting in high mortality. In this article, we report a young male who had chest pain accompanied by systemic involvement, and was diagnosed of Behçet's disease with serious pulmonary artery and coronary thrombosis by systemic check-up. Finally, the patient was successfully treated with a combination of prednisone and immunosuppressive agents instead of surgery. To our knowledge, this is the first report of concurrent coronary thrombosis and pulmonary arter…

Occlusive vascular disease most often results from thrombosis superimposed on atherosclerotic plaque. In the case of an acute coronary syndrome including an acute myocardium infarction or an unstable angina pectoris thrombus in coronary artery takes significant part as known. There are few reports about animal models of acute coronary artery thrombi, because of the difficulties of operative significance. We have succeeded in making thrombus at murine coronary arteries with ferric chloride. Slight or moderate IL-8 expressions were found in the endothelial cells in the thrombus formed vessel ana

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine the circadian, weekly, and seasonal variation of coronary stent thrombosis.
BACKGROUND: Other adverse cardiovascular events such as acute myocardial infarction are known to have higher incidences during the early morning hours, Mondays, and winter months.
METHODS: The Mayo Clinic Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Registry was searched for patients admitted to our center who underwent repeat percutaneous coronary intervention in a previously stented coronary artery segment. Stent thrombosis was confirmed by angiographic review, and date and time of symptom

BACKGROUND: Stent thrombosis (ST) is a dreaded complication after stent implantation and is associated with a mortality between 5% and 45%. The mechanisms by which ST arises are complex. Because of the seriousness of this situation, all phy - sicians should have at least basic knowledge of it. In this article, we present the risk factors for ST and discuss some innovative approaches to its treatment.
METHODS: This review is based on pertinent articles retrieved by a selective search in PubMed, and on current international guidelines and expert recommendations.
RESULTS: The frequency of ST ha

We present a case in which optical coherence tomography was useful to characterize in vivo superficial calcific sheet and exclude other causes of acute coronary syndromes.

Despite improved stent implantation technologies and effective antiplatelet regimens, stent thrombosis has been one of the most important problem in percutaneous coronary intervention. Stent thrombosis is a rare but usually catastrophic event, frequently associated with large MI or death. Stent thrombosis is generally categorized according to the timing of the event as early (0 to 30 days), late (31 days to 1 year), very late (> 1 year). Late and very late stent thrombosis after stent implantation has not yet been adequately characterized, mainly because of its low incidence. And the optimal d

A simple and reproducible canine model of platelet-rich coronary artery thrombosis, suitable for the evaluation of antithrombotic drugs, has been developed. In this model, thrombus was initiated in the left arterial descending coronary artery by means of transmural green light (540 nm) in the presence of i.v. administered rose bengal (a photosensitizer dye). The photochemical reaction between green light and rose bengal causes endothelial injury which is followed by platelet adhesion aggregation and formation of an occlusive platelet-rich thrombus at the site of the photochemical reaction. In

We here report a case of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) due to simultaneous acute coronary artery occlusions of two major coronary arteries in a patient with coronary ectasia. The patient had been previously submitted to percutaneous coronary angioplasty with bare metal stent implantation in both culprit vessels. Very late stent thrombosis could be the cause of the first occlusion, triggering the event in the other vessel. In addition, concomitant embolic sources were not identified. Although routine aspiration thrombectomy in STEMI was not proven to be beneficial in randomized cli

In this study, the impact of thrombus growth at the left coronary ostium-resulting from a misplaced stent-was investigated through numerical simulations. Blood flow from the aortic root into the coronary arteries was modeled for several potential thrombus sizes to assess changes in pressure and shear stress caused by thrombus development. The results showed that even in the most severe case examined (with the thrombus growing three times its original size), the obstruction to the coronary cross-sectional area was not sufficient to produce a significant pressure drop or wall shear stress increa

A 74-year-old female had urgent surgery with replacement of the ascending aorta for acute type A dissection. Postprocedure, the electrocardiogram showed an ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction in the antero-lateral leads. Angiography revealed a thrombotic occlusion of the left anterior descending artery, treated successfully with bivalirudin administration, thrombus aspiration and a balloon angioplasty. This case involves the rare coexistence of acute type A aortic dissection and myocardial infarction due to coronary plaque thrombosis.

A 59-year-old woman was admitted with acute inferior myocardial infarction. Cardiac catheterization revealed total occlusion in the right coronary artery and thrombus-like filling defect in the left anterior descending coronary artery. With simultaneous intracoronary urokinase infusion to the right and left coronary arteries, the right coronary artery became patent and the thrombus in the left anterior descending coronary artery was released to the distal coronary artery. Thrombocytosis was disclosed by laboratory examination. The relationship between myocardial infarction and thrombocytosis i

Perioperative myocardial infarction is a serious complication affecting a significant portion of patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery. This may arise due to coronary graft thrombosis, a rare but potentially fatal phenomenon associated with both congenital and acquired risk factors. Multiple case reports implicate the role of protamine in the development of such thromboses. The role of protamine in facilitating the regulation of hemostasis by reversing the anticoagulant effects of heparin in patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass is well-recognized. However, discussion o
