[Protective effect of nerve growth factor on cholinergic neurons corpus striatum of new born rat subjected to hypoxia-ischemia].

Cerebral hypoxia-ischemia was produced in 7 day old rats by right common carotid artery occlusion combined with systemic hypoxia. In the hypoxic-ischemic group animals, striatal ACh contents on both sides were reduced to a significant extent in commensurate to AChE histochemical image analysis. All these changes could be restored to normal control by a protection dose (50 micrograms) of NGF intraventricularly injected.

[The complex interaction of the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei with the epiphysis and corpus striatum--a functionally unified system for regulating circadian behavioral fluctuations].

Suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of the hypothalamus are a pacemaker of circadian fluctuations of behaviour. Their signals reach the executive organs by the hormonal and neuronal pathways through the brain messenger structures. It has been demonstrated with relationships between the SCN, the pineal gland and striatum that these communications present the closed and autoregulated functional blocks.

Cholinergic muscarinic receptors in human fetal brain: ontogeny of [3H]quinuclidinyl benzilate binding sites in corpus striatum, brainstem, and cerebellum.

The ontogeny of muscarinic receptors was studied in human fetal striatum, brainstem, and cerebellum to investigate general principles of synaptogenesis as well as the physiological balance between various chemical synapses during development in a given region of the brain. [3H]Quinuclidinyl benzilate ([3H]QNB) binding was assayed in total particulate fraction (TPF) from various parts of brain. In the corpus striatum, QNB binding sites are present at 16 weeks of gestation (average concentration 180 fmol/mg protein of TPF), slowly increase up to 24 weeks (average concentration 217 fmol/mg protei

A short echo 1H spectroscopy and volumetric MRI study of the corpus striatum in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder and comparison subjects.

OBJECTIVE: It is likely that the corpus striatum is involved in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Prior studies have inconsistently found alterations in caudate volumes in patients with OCD. This study was undertaken in the hope that N-acetylaspartate and volumetric measures together would elucidate the presence and nature of corpus striatum volumetric abnormalities in OCD. METHOD: Thirteen patients meeting the DSM-IV criteria for OCD, who had been medication free for a minimum of 6 weeks, and 13 psychiatrically normal matched comparison subjects participated in the study. Short echo 1H ma

Iron Deficiency-Induced Changes in the Hippocampus, Corpus Striatum, and Monoamines Levels That Lead to Anxiety, Depression, Sleep Disorders, and Psychotic Disorders.

Iron deficiency anemia caused by severe iron deficiency in infancy is associated with poor health and severe neurological impairment such as mental, motor, social, emotional, neurophysiological, and neurocognitive dysfunction. The behavioral effects of iron deficiency can present themselves in infancy, but they are also found in adulthood. Some behaviors can start in childhood but persist throughout adulthood. The behaviors that are particularly often seen in infants and children include wariness and hesitance, lack of positive affect, and diminished social engagement. The affected behaviors i

Acute and chronic effects of neuroleptics and acute effects of apomorphine and amphetamine on dopamine turnover in corpus striatum and substantia nigra of the rat brain.

The effects of chronic neuroleptic treatment on the concentrations of homovanillic acid (HVA) and 3,4-dihydroxy-phenylacetic acid (DOPAC) in the rat substantia nigra (SN) and corpus striatum (CS) were determined. Acute haloperidol and alpha-flupenthixol increased HVA and DOPAC in the CS but after chronic treatment no significant change was found compared to controls. In the SN, on the contrary, acute haloperidol reduced and subsequently increased HVA and DOPAC and alpha-flupenthixol had no significant effect, whereas chronic treatment with either neuroleptic increased the levels of the metabol

Identification of protein phosphatase 2A as the major tyrosine hydroxylase phosphatase in adrenal medulla and corpus striatum: evidence from the effects of okadaic acid.

(i) The major sites on bovine adrenal tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) phosphorylated by calmodulin-dependent multiprotein kinase (CaM-MPK) and cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase were shown to be Ser-19 and Ser-40, respectively, while Ser-40 was also phosphorylated slowly by CaM-MPK. (ii) Type 2A and type 2C phosphatases accounted for approximately 90% and approximately 10% of TH phosphatase activity, respectively, in extracts of adrenal medulla and corpus striatum assayed at near physiological free Mg2+ (1 mM), while type 1 and type 2B phosphatases had negligible activity towards TH. Exposure of rats to ethanol from postnatal days 4 to 8: alterations of cholinergic neurochemistry in the cerebral cortex and corpus striatum at day 20.

Male and female rat pups were administered ethanol (3 g/kg/dose) twice daily by intragastric intubation between postnatal Day (PN) 4 and 8. Pups were maternally reared throughout the exposure period and until sacrifice on PN20. The consequences of this growth spurt exposure to ethanol were measured by an impact upon body growth, as well as upon specific growth parameters and cholinergic neurochemical factors within the cerebral cortex and corpus striatum. Specific endpoints included muscarinic receptor binding dynamics, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and choline acetyltransferase (CAT) activities

[Case of Wernicke's encephalopathy and subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord due to vitamin deficiency showing changes in the bilateral corpus striatum and cardiac arrest due to beriberi heart disease].

A 52-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of appetite loss, unsteadiness, psychogenic symptoms, ataxia, and consciousness disturbance as a result of the ingestion of a diet restricted to only carbohydrates for a long term. Laboratory examination indicated the presence of pancytopenia with macrocytic anemia; further, decreased vitamin B1 and B12 levels were detected in her serum. Magnetic resonance imaging fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), revealed high-signal intensity in the bilateral corpus striatum, third ventricle circumference, and cerebellar cortex. Thereafter,

Peter H. Kelly, Paul W. Seviour and Susan D. Iversen (1975) "Amphetamine and apomorphine responses in the rat following 6-OHDA lesions of the nucleus accumbens septi and corpus striatum" [Brain Res. 94 (3) 507-522].

UNLABELLED: Eight μg of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) injected bilaterally into the nucleus accumbens septi (NAS) or the caudate nucleus of the rat resulted in 79% and 50% depletion of endogenous dopamine (DA) at these respective sites. Fourteen days after the injection a low dose of amphetamine failed to induce the characteristic locomotor response in the NAS-lesioned rats but did so in the caudate-lesioned animals. By contrast the caudate lesion, but not the NAS lesion, abolished intense forms of stereotyped behaviour induced by higher doses of amphetamine. Both lesioned groups exhibited supers

Localization of mu class glutathione-S-transferase in the forebrains of neonatal and young rats: implications for astrocyte development.

The Yb (Mu class) isoform of glutathione-S-transferase has recently been localized in ependymal cells, subependymal cells, and astrocytes in the forebrains of rats 3 weeks to adult in age. It was not known, however, at what age Mu might first be observed during postnatal development and whether the first cells in which it was found would be immature astrocytes or some less differentiated glial precursor cell, if the latter were present in vivo. Tissue sections from the forebrains of neonatal to 16 day old rats were immunostained with antibodies against Mu. In neonates Mu was observed in viment

Lambda-cyhalothrin enhances inflammation in nigrostriatal region in rats: Regulatory role of NF-κβ and JAK-STAT signaling.

The risk to develop neurobehavioural abnormalities in humans on exposure to lambda-cyhalothrin (LCT) - a type II synthetic pyrethroid has enhanced significantly due to its extensive uses in agriculture, homes, veterinary practices and public health programs. Earlier, we found that the brain dopaminergic system is vulnerable to LCT and affects motor functions in rats. In continuation to this, the present study is focused to unravel the role of neuroinflammation in LCT-induced neurotoxicity in substantia nigra and corpus striatum in rats. Increase in the mRNA expression of proinflammatory cytoki

An investigation into the effects of manganese and other divalent cations on tyrosine hydroxylase activity.

The activity of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) was measured in homogenates of hypothalamic tissue and corpus striatum obtained from 24 day old rats. The addition of manganese to the preparations had no direct effect on TH activity in either brain region. Similarly, the addition of calcium, magnesium and lead at concentrations of 1.0 mM did not affect TH activity. Cadmium and zinc (1.0 mM) significantly reduced TH activity in both the hypothalamic area and corpus striatum. Iron (1.0 mM) significantly stimulated TH activity in the corpus striatum but did not affect TH activity in the hypothalamic are

Depletion of copper and manganese in brain after MPTP treatment of mice.

The mechanism of action of MPTP, a parkinsonism-inducing drug has been related to trace metals as a result of the observed potentiation of the neurotoxic action of the drug when diethyldithiocarbamate is concurrently administered. Diethyldithiocarbamate is a well-known chelator of trace metals, particularly copper. In the present study we analyzed the concentrations of copper and manganese in four brain regions of mice treated with neurotoxic doses of MPTP, in order to further substantiate the relationship between trace metals of MPTP-induced neurotoxicity. Male Swiss albino mice were administ

Estrogen as a neuroprotectant against MPTP-induced neurotoxicity in C57/B1 mice.

Castrated retired breeder male and female mice were treated or not with a 17 beta-estradiol pellet. At 10 days postcastration +/- estrogen treatment all animals were treated with MPTP. Five days later, concentrations of dopamine were determined from the corpus striatum and olfactory tubercle. Both castrated male and female mice treated with estrogen had significantly greater concentrations of dopamine within the corpus striatum compared with their respective gender controls, which did not receive estrogen. By contrast, no statistically significant differences in olfactory tubercle dopamine con
