The mushroom body D1 dopamine receptor controls innate courtship drive.

Mating is critical for species survival and is profoundly regulated by neuromodulators and neurohormones to accommodate internal states and external factors. To identify the underlying neuromodulatory mechanisms, we investigated the roles of dopamine receptors in various aspects of courtship behavior in Drosophila. Here, we report that the D1 dopamine receptor dDA1 regulates courtship drive in naïve males. The wild-type naïve males actively courted females regardless their appearance or mating status. On the contrary, the dDA1 mutant (dumb) males exhibited substantially reduced courtship towar

Chemical cues from females trigger male courtship behaviour in grasshoppers.

Gomphocerine grasshoppers use species-specific calling songs for sex recognition and mate attraction. In two closely related species, Chorthippus biguttulus and C. mollis, acoustic communication is the only experimentally characterized communication channel that elicits male courtship behaviour. However, courtship in these species involves extensive close-range interactions that are likely to be mediated by other signalling modalities, in particular chemical cues. We developed a bioassay to determine if female cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) act as chemical cues that induce courtship behaviour,

Generalization of courtship learning in Drosophila is mediated by cis-vaccenyl acetate.

Reproductive behavior in Drosophila has both stereotyped and plastic components that are driven by age- and sex-specific chemical cues. Males who unsuccessfully court virgin females subsequently avoid females that are of the same age as the trainer. In contrast, males trained with mature mated females associate volatile appetitive and aversive pheromonal cues and learn to suppress courtship of all females. Here we show that the volatile aversive pheromone that leads to generalized learning with mated females is (Z)-11-octadecenyl acetate (cis-vaccenyl acetate, cVA). cVA is a major component of

Loss of gdnfa disrupts spermiogenesis and male courtship behavior in zebrafish.

Spermatogenesis is essential for establishment and maintenance of reproduction in male vertebrates. Spermatogenesis, which is mainly regulated by the combined action of hormones, growth factors, and epigenetic factors, is highly conserved. Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is a member of the transforming growth factor-β superfamily. In this study, global gdnfa knockout and Tg (gdnfa: mcherry) transgenic zebrafish lines were generated. Loss of gdnfa resulted in disorganized testes, decreased gonadosomatic index, and low percentage of mature spermatozoa. In the Tg (gdnfa: mcherr

DEHP toxicity on vision, neuromuscular junction, and courtship behaviors of Drosophila.

Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is the most common plasticizer. Previous studies have shown DEHP treatment accelerates neurological degeneration, suggesting that DEHP may impact retinal sensitivity to light, neurotransmission, and copulation behaviors. Although its neurotoxicity and antifertility properties have been studied, whether DEHP exposure disrupts vision and how DEHP influences neuromuscular junction (NMJ) have not been reported yet. Moreover, the impact of DEHP on insect courtship behavior is still elusive. Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) were treated with series concentrati

Lipopolysaccharide-induced systemic inflammation alters courtship ultrasonic vocalizations in male mice.

BACKGROUND: Sickness behavior comprises a coordinated constellation of motivational, cognitive, and social alterations that emerge during systemic inflammation. Although reductions in locomotion, feeding, and social engagement have been extensively characterized, how inflammation affects ultrasonic vocal communication-an ethologically relevant index of social motivation in rodents-remains insufficiently understood. Here, we investigated how systemic immune activation alters male-female social communication in mice by jointly assessing ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) and approach behavior. MET

Courtship in Drosophila mosaics: sex-specific foci for sequential action patterns.

Mosaic fate mapping is used to locate the foci determining sex-specific steps in the mating behavior of Drosophila. Male performance of following females and displaying wing vibration toward them requires that a focus inside the head be constituted of male tissue, regardless of the sex of the head sense organs, the legs, the wings, or the thoracic ganglion. For attempted copulation to occur, a second focus in the thoracic region must also be male. Courtship by males is induced by a posteriorly located focus in the female, but an anterior female focus determines receptivity to attempted copulat

Courtship dives of Anna's hummingbird offer insights into flight performance limits.

Behavioural displays are a common feature of animal courtship. Just as female preferences can generate exaggerated male ornaments, female preferences for dynamic behaviours may cause males to perform courtship displays near intrinsic performance limits. I provide an example of an extreme display, the courtship dive of Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna). Diving male Anna's hummingbirds were filmed with a combination of high-speed and conventional video cameras. After powering the initial stage of the dive by flapping, males folded their wings by their sides, at which point they reached an averag

Male-specific fruitless specifies the neural substrates of Drosophila courtship behaviour.

Robust innate behaviours are attractive systems for genetically dissecting how environmental cues are perceived and integrated to generate complex behaviours. During courtship, Drosophila males engage in a series of innate, stereotyped behaviours that are coordinated by specific sensory cues. However, little is known about the specific neural substrates mediating this complex behavioural programme. Genetic, developmental and behavioural studies have shown that the fruitless (fru) gene encodes a set of male-specific transcription factors (FruM) that act to establish the potential for courtship

Courtship and distress ultrasonic vocalizations are altered in a mouse model of Angelman syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Angelman syndrome (AS) is a single-gene neurodevelopmental disorder caused by loss of function of the maternal copy of the UBE3A gene. Nearly all individuals with AS lack speech, resulting in major impacts on daily life for patients and caregivers. To evaluate new therapies for AS, it is crucial to have a mouse model that characterizes meaningful clinical features. Vocalizations are used in many contexts in mice, including pup retrieval, social interactions, courtship, and distress. Previous work in the Ube3am−/p+ mouse model of AS found abnormalities in the number of ultrasonic vo

The mechanics of male courtship display behaviour in the Ptiloris riflebirds (Aves: Paradisaeidae).

Sexual selection through female choice has driven the evolution of some of the most elaborate signalling behaviours in animals. These displays often require specialized morphological adaptations and may incorporate signals in multiple sensory modalities. Visual and acoustic signals are often precisely choreographed in temporally structured courtship performances, though the precise mechanics of such signalling behaviours are often enigmatic. We find that riflebirds (genus Ptiloris)-a bird of paradise clade-achieve their remarkable display postures by hyperextending the wrist joint, vastly exce

Courtship behaviour of Phlebotomus papatasi the sand fly vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: The sand fly Phlebotomus papatasi is an Old World vector of Leishmania major, the etiologic agent of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis. This study describes the courtship behaviour of P. papatasi and compares it with that of Lutzomyia longipalpis, the New World vector of visceral leishmaniasis. Understanding the details of courtship behaviour in P. papatasi may help us to understand the role of sex pheromones in this important vector. RESULTS: P. papatasi courtship was found to start with the female touching the male, leading him to begin abdomen bending and wing flapping. Followin

Mushroom bodies are not required for courtship behavior by normal and sexually mosaic Drosophila.

To elucidate the effect of feminization of male Drosophila brain cells on courtship control, we performed a large scale screening of expression drivers that can suppress male-specific behavior with transformer gene expression. Two drivers caused essentially total courtship suppression. The expression pattern of these drivers did not show any correlation with the mushroom bodies or the antennal lobes, the regions that have been suggested to play important roles in courtship. Ablation of mushroom bodies using hydroxyurea treatment did not affect this courtship suppression. The ablation did not c

Mutation of Drosophila dopamine receptor DopR leads to male-male courtship behavior.

In Drosophila, dopamine plays important roles in many biological processes as a neuromodulator. Previous studies showed that dopamine level could affect fly courtship behaviors. Disturbed dopamine level leads to abnormal courtship behavior in two different ways. Dopamine up-regulation induces male-male courtship behavior, while down-regulation of dopamine level results in increased sexual attractiveness of males towards other male flies. Until now, the identity of the dopamine receptor involved in this abnormal male-male courtship behavior remains unknown. Here we used genetic approaches to in

Courtship pheromone-induced c-Fos-like immunolabeling in the female salamander brain.

Plethodontid salamanders display intricate courtship behaviors. Proteinaceous courtship pheromones were recently discovered in the submandibular (mental) gland of the male Plethodon shermani, the red-legged salamander. Behavioral studies showed that these male pheromones are delivered by direct contact to the female snout and modulate her receptivity during courtship. Previous reports demonstrated that experimental application of courtship pheromones activates vomeronasal sensory neurons in P. shermani. The present study investigated the CNS response to courtship pheromones in that species usi

Conditional disruption of synaptic transmission induces male-male courtship behavior in Drosophila.

It is reported here that male-male courtship behavior is evoked instantaneously in the fruit fly Drosophila by conditional disruption of synaptic transmission. A temperature-sensitive allele of the Drosophila dynamin gene shibire (shi(ts1)) was expressed by using the GAL4/UAS system to disrupt synaptic transmission from GAL4-positive neurons in a temperature-dependent manner. An enhancer-trap GAL4 line C309 directing shi(ts1) expression in central and peripheral neurons (C309/UAS-shi(ts1)) initiated stereotypical precopulatory behavior toward other mature males immediately after a temperature

Concurrent Signals and Behavioral Plasticity in Blue Crab (Callinectes sapidus Rathbun) Courtship.

Behavioral flexibility and behavioral regulation through courtship signals may both contribute to mating success. Blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) form precopulatory pairs after courtship periods that are influenced by female and perhaps male urine-based chemical signals. In this study, male and female crabs were observed in 1.5-m circular outdoor pools for 45 min while the occurrence and sequence of courtship behaviors and pairing outcomes were recorded. These results were then compared with trials in which males or females were blindfolded; lateral antennule (outer flagellum) ablated; blindf

The Drosophila microbiome has a limited influence on sleep, activity, and courtship behaviors.

In animals, commensal microbes modulate various physiological functions, including behavior. While microbiota exposure is required for normal behavior in mammals, it is not known how widely this dependency is present in other animal species. We proposed the hypothesis that the microbiome has a major influence on the behavior of the vinegar fly (Drosophila melanogaster), a major invertebrate model organism. Several assays were used to test the contribution of the microbiome on some well-characterized behaviors: defensive behavior, sleep, locomotion, and courtship in microbe-bearing, control fli

An olfactory receptor for food-derived odours promotes male courtship in Drosophila.

Many animals attract mating partners through the release of volatile sex pheromones, which can convey information on the species, gender and receptivity of the sender to induce innate courtship and mating behaviours by the receiver. Male Drosophila melanogaster fruitflies display stereotyped reproductive behaviours towards females, and these behaviours are controlled by the neural circuitry expressing male-specific isoforms of the transcription factor Fruitless (FRU(M)). However, the volatile pheromone ligands, receptors and olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) that promote male courtship have not

Misexpression of the white (w) gene triggers male-male courtship in Drosophila.

We report here that the general ectopic expression of a tryptophan/guanine transmembrane transporter gene, white (w), induces male-male courtship in Drosophila. Activation of a hsp-70/miniwhite (mini-w) transgene in mature males results in a marked change in their sexual behavior such that they begin to vigorously court other mature males. In transformant populations containing equal numbers of both sexes, most males participate, thus forming male-male courtship chains, circles, and lariats. Mutations that ablate the w transgene function also abolish this inducible behavior. Female sexual beha
