[Kingella kingae septicemia in a patient with coxsackievirus infection].

Kingella kingae is a gram-negative cocci present in the oral flora ; this organism is difficult to isolate by conventional culture techniques ; it can be detected after longer incubation period (more than 6 days) in blood culture. It is responsible of various infectious diseases, especially in children below 3 years-old where it is a cause of arthritis and osteomyeli tis. It is included in HACEK organisms responsible of 2 to 3 % of all cases of native endocarditis. The case report is the case of a young women with Kingella kingae septicemia in a context of oral lesions from Coxsackie virus inf

In-utero coxsackievirus B4 infection of the mouse thymus.

Type B coxsackievirus (CV-B) infections are involved frequently in the triggering of several autoimmune diseases such as myocarditis, dilated cardiomyopathy, pericarditis, pancreatitis, type 1 diabetes, encephalitis, thyroiditis or Sjögren's syndrome. Serological and virological evidence suggests that maternal infections during pregnancy can play a role in the appearance of these diseases in offspring. The current study aims to explore the effect of an in-utero CV-B infection on the fetal thymus, the central site for programming immunological self-tolerance. In this perspective, female Swiss a

Evidence for coxsackievirus infection in primary Sjögren's syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by activation of minor salivary gland (MSG) epithelial cells and B and T lymphocytic infiltrates. These findings have long encouraged the hypothesis that a persistent viral infection of the MSG epithelial cells may drive the autoimmune response; however, the identity of that virus has remained elusive. The aim of this study was to test this hypothesis. METHODS: We applied the differential display protocol to MSG RNA samples from patients with primary SS and healthy controls. We then used seminested reverse trans

Perinatal Coxsackievirus B3 Infection with Transient Thrombocytopenia.

Coxsackievirus (Cox) B is the second common picornaviruses, after echovirus, detected from children younger than 2 months of age. Neonates who present with Cox B3 infection in the first week are known to have severe illness such as myocarditis or menigoencephalitis. Severity is commonly associated with perinatal vertical transmission. Here, we report a neonatal case of Cox B3 infection with severe thrombocytopenia through horizontal transmission. The patient was a preterm infant born without asphyxia by selective cesarean section. From his 6(th) day of life, the patient had recurrent episodes

The role of B lymphocytes in coxsackievirus B3 infection.

Coxsackieviruses are important human pathogens, frequently causing myocarditis, pancreatitis, and a variety of less severe diseases. B lymphocytes appear central to the interaction between these viruses and their mammalian hosts, because agammaglobulinemic humans, genetically incapable of antibody production, are susceptible to chronic infections by coxsackieviruses and related enteroviruses, such as poliovirus and echovirus. However, recent studies show that Type B coxsackievirus (CVB) infects B lymphocytes soon after infection, suggesting the possibility that these cells may play some role i

Outbreak of herpangina associated with Coxsackievirus B3 infection.

An outbreak of acute febrile illness was observed in summer, 1987, in a welfare home in which 31 healthy infants were accommodated. Within a 5-day period 25 infants (81%) acquired a febrile illness. Coxsackievirus B3 was isolated from 16 (64%) of 25 throat swabs. In the patients in whom viral culture was negative or not performed, 6 were serologically identified as having a coxsackievirus B3 infection. Among 22 patients identified as having a coxsackievirus B3 infection 7 had typical herpangina and the others had pharyngitis with or without a few small vesicles. Serum alpha-interferon was dete

Coxsackievirus B2 infection in a neonate with incontinentia pigmenti.

Because of the concern for herpes simplex virus infection in the neonate, the presence of neonatal vesiculobullous lesions is a critical finding. However, there are other etiologies for these lesions. A case of a neonate with a vesicular rash and meningoencephalitis which was initially thought due to herpes is presented. The infant was ultimately determined to have incontinentia pigmenti and a concomitant coxsackievirus B2 infection.

Pathophysiological aspects of coxsackievirus B intestinal infection.

Our findings reveal that intestinal infection with coxsackie B5 results in decreased intestinal epithelial cell division in association with an increase in carbohydrate (glucose) and amino acid (leucine) absorption in the small intestine. These findings are contrasted with those occurring during Salmonella infection, which results in increased intestinal cell division rate but decreased carbohydrate (glucose) absorption. The changes in intestinal function and physiology that have been described occurred during an asymptomatic viral infection characterized by normal intestinal histology. A reas

Coxsackievirus B infection in pregnant mice and transplacental infection of the fetus.

Direct instillation of coxsackievirus B1 into the gastrointestinal tracts of albino mice caused viremia in more than 85% of the animals within 1 day. In pregnant mice infected early in gestation (7 days), the geometric mean titer of virus in the blood was lower (P = 0.02) and the duration of viremia was shorter (P = 0.07) than in nonpregnant female mice, but infection of the heart, liver, and uterus did not differ on each of 5 days after infection. Although transplacental infection of the placenta or fetus or both occurred, the high spontaneous abortion rate (48%) obviated comparison of transp

Serum-derived IgG from coxsackievirus A6-infected patients can enhance the infection of peripheral blood mononuclear cells with coxsackievirus A6.

Coxsackievirus A6 (CV-A6) has recently emerged as an enterovirus causing Hand Foot and Mouth Disease with severe complications. The pathogenic mechanisms of CV-A6- associated Hand foot and Mouth disease are largely unknown. In this study, it was investigated whether serum and IgG from patients with CV-A6 infection can enhance the infection of PBMC with the virus. Serum samples were obtained from five children with CV-A6 infection confirmed by RT-PCR and seven controls. IgG was isolated from serum by using affinity chromatography columns. CV-A6 was incubated with serum or IgG from controls and

Coxsackievirus B5 infection and aseptic meningitis in neonates and children.

In metropolitan Washington, DC, an outbreak of aseptic meningitis in children was recognized in the summer and fall of 1972. Age-specific attack rates were highest in children less than 1 year of age. The incidence of cases showed two peaks: one in July and another in October. Coxsackievirus B5 was associated with cases occurring in July, August, and September, but was not implicated in the October cases. Seventy-six percent of the confirmed coxsackievirus B5 infections in aseptic meningitis patients occurred in infants less than 2 months old. Specific meningeal symptoms were less frequently o

Development of an IgM-capture ELISA for Coxsackievirus A16 infection.

Diagnosis of Coxsackievirus A16 (CA16) infection in China relies mainly on reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) that require expensive equipment and special trained personnel, thus making its wide application in health care settings unlikely. In this study, a novel IgM anti-CA16 assay was developed for the detection of IgM antibodies to CA16 in serum. The responses and diagnostic value of IgM for the CA16 infection were assessed by testing 1970 serum samples. The results showed that sensitivity of IgM test was 84.6% (259/306, 95% CI: 80.1-88.5), and specificity in control s

Transplacental infection of Coxsackievirus B3 pathological findings in the fetus.

Coxsackievirus intrauterine infection has been documented mostly on the basis of indirect evidence of transplacental transmission, with neonatal manifestations ranging from asymptomatic infection to meningoencephalitis, myocarditis, and generalized sepsis. This is the first report of prenatal findings and fetoplacental pathology in a third trimester fetus with coxsackie B3 transplacental infection confirmed by molecular techniques. Prenatal ultrasound detected severe reduction of fetal movements at the 27th week. Late onset fetal akinesia deformation sequence with mild arthrogryposis, necrotic

Research progress and application prospects of animal models of group B Coxsackievirus infections.

Group B Coxsackieviruses (CVBs) consist of six serotypes, CVB1 to CVB6, which can clinically affect the heart, brain, liver, pancreas and other organs, causing myocarditis, encephalitis, myelitis, pancreatitis, hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) and other diseases, and can even lead to death. CVBs are widespread globally and highly contagious. However, there are currently no approved CVB vaccines or effective treatments. The construction and optimization of animal models will aid in the in-depth understanding of CVB infections and its pathogenesis, providing essential tools for the exploration

Virus-like particle-based vaccine against coxsackievirus A6 protects mice against lethal infections.

Coxsackievirus A6 (CA6) is emerging as one of the major causative agents of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) worldwide. However, no vaccine is currently available for preventing CA6 infection. Here, we report the development of a virus-like particle (VLP)-based recombinant vaccine for CA6. We produced CA6 VLPs in insect cells by infecting the cells with a baculovirus coexpressing the genes encoding CA6 P1 and 3CD. Biochemical analyses showed that the produced VLPs consisted of VP0, VP1, and VP3 capsid subunit proteins generated by the cleavage of P1 by 3CD. Mice immunized with these VLPs p

A neonatal mouse model of central nervous system infections caused by Coxsackievirus B5.

As one of the key members of the coxsackievirus B group, coxsackievirus B5 (CV-B5) can cause many central nervous system diseases, such as viral encephalitis, aseptic meningitis, and acute flaccid paralysis. Notably, epidemiological data indicate that outbreaks of CV-B5-associated central nervous system (CNS) diseases have been reported worldwide throughout history. In this study, which was conducted to promote CV-B5 vaccine and anti-virus drug research, a 3-day-old BALB/c mouse model was established using a CV-B5 clinical isolate (CV-B5/JS417) as the challenge strain. Mice challenged with CV-

Protease 2A induces stress granule formation during coxsackievirus B3 and enterovirus 71 infections.

BACKGROUND: Stress granules (SGs) are granular aggregates in the cytoplasm that are formed under a variety of stress situations including viral infection. Previous studies indicate that poliovirus, a member of Picornaviridae, can induce SG formation. However, the exact mechanism by which the picornaviruses induce SG formation is unknown. METHOD: The localization of SG markers in cells infected with coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) or enterovirus 71 (EV71) and in cells expressing each viral protein was determined via immunofluorescence assays or plasmid transfection. Eight plasmids expressing mutants

Clinical characteristics of echovirus 11 and coxsackievirus B5 infections in Taiwanese children requiring hospitalization.

BACKGROUND: Severe illness can occur in young children infected with certain types of enteroviruses including echovirus 11 (Echo11) and coxsackievirus B5 (CoxB5). The manifestations and outcomes of Echo11 and CoxB5 diseases across all ages of children remained not comprehensively characterized in Taiwan. METHODS: Culture-confirmed Echo11 (60 patients) or CoxB5 (65 patients) infections were identified in a hospital from 2010 to 2018. The demographics, clinical presentations, laboratory data and outcomes were abstracted and compared between the two viruses infections. RESULTS: Echo11 and CoxB5

Onychomadesis: A Rare Manifestation of Coxsackievirus A6 Infection in an Adult Patient.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a self-limiting viral illness predominantly affecting children under 10 years of age, with peak incidence in those aged one to four years. Recent outbreaks of Coxsackievirus A6 (CVA6) have increased its incidence across all age groups, including adults. Onychomadesis, a proximal nail plate detachment due to transient matrix arrest, is a recognized but underreported delayed complication of HFMD. We report a case of a 60-year-old man who developed onychomadesis three weeks after clinical recovery from CVA6-induced HFMD. Initial symptoms included fever, sor
