COMPARISON OF AGE-RELATED CHARACTERISTICS OF CEPHALOMETRIC INDICATORS: BIORBITAL BREADTH (EC-EC) AND INTERORBITAL BREADTH (D-D) IN ARTIFICIALLY DEFORMED AND NORMAL SKULLS.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the age-related characteristics of two craniofacial measurements-biorbital breadth (ec-ec) and interorbital breadth (d-d)-between artificially deformed and normal skulls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 254 skulls (200 without artificial deformation and 54 with deformation) from the craniological collection of Azerbaijan Medical University were analyzed. Skulls were categorized by sex and age groups, following a classification system adopted from the 1965 VII All-Union Conference. Cephalometric measurements were taken using electronic and sliding calip

Hominid evolution of the arteriovenous system through the cranial base and its relevance for craniosynostosis.

OBJECTIVE: This paper discusses how the evolving hominid architecture of the arteriovenous system through the cranial base diverted foreseeable pathology in the human brain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bipedal upright posture was an early adaptation in mosaic morphological pattern changes in hominid evolution; a key feature, the ability of blood to flow either to vertebral or internal jugular venous systems. Encephalization punctuated hominid evolution, its vulnerable feature, a lower threshold for thermal damage. Comparative analysis of ape and human skulls show "fingerprint" structures, revealin

A case of elongated styloid process in a modern-age skull from Puerto Cabello, Venezuela.

BACKGROUND: The styloid process (SP) arises from cartilage of the second branchial arch and tends to calcify during later life. If the length of the SP is more than 30 mm, it can be considered abnormally elongated. Clinical symptoms associated with elongation of this type are defined as Eagle's syndrome. The paper presents a case of an elongated SP in a modern skull from Puerto Cabello, Venezuela, obtained from a series of skulls of African slaves kept at the Department of Anthropology, Polish Academy of Sciences in Wroclaw. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The skull belonged to a male individual, aged

Temporal lobe evolution in Hominidae and the origin of human lobe proportions.

Objectives Evolutionary changes in hominin social complexity have been associated with increases in absolute brain size. The temporal lobes are nestled in the middle cranial fossae (MCF) of the skull, the dimensions of which allow estimation of temporal lobe volume (TLV) in extant and fossil taxa. Materials and Methods The main aim of this study is to determine where along the hominid phylogeny, major temporal lobe size transitions occurred. We used computed tomography (CT) scans of crania, 3D photogrammetry data, and laser surface scans of endocranial casts to measure seven MCF metrics in 11

Anomalous Foramina Through the Greater Wing of the Sphenoid Bone: A Radio-Anatomical Study on a Cohort of Dry Skulls from the Interbellum Period Using MDCT.

Background: The foramen of Arnold (FA) and foramen of Vesalius (FV) are two inconstant small openings through the greater wing of the sphenoid bone. When FA is present, the lesser petrosal nerve passes through it. FV usually contains an emissary vein that connects the cavernous sinus to the pterygoid plexus. Objectives: To assess the presence, unilaterally or bilaterally, of the aforementioned inconstant foramina in order to gain a better insight into the anatomic variability of the middle cranial fossa. Methods: We analyzed five hundred random unenhanced CT examinations of human dry skulls fr

Relation of the alveolus to the cemento-enamel junction following attritional wear in aboriginal skulls. An enquiry into normality of cementum exposure with aging.

With tooth attrition, the height of the alveolar crest does not increase to keep pace with active tooth eruption and the cemento-enamel junction-alveolar crest distance increases slightly with age in aboriginal skulls. But there is no atrophy of the alveolar bony margin. Some decrease in interalveolar height does occur. This does not necessarily mean that passive eruption with exposure of cementum is normal. Rather it is postulated that the epithelial attachment proliferates onto cementum, inhibiting alveolar crest addition, while the base of the gingival sulcus remains at the cemento-enamel j

HUMAN SKELETONS OF TEHUAC'AN.

The oldest series of human skeletons in the New World shows a high incidence of traumatic lesions during the early nomadic hunting and gathering phase, dental patterns which reflect the transition to an agricultural economy, some evidences of microevolution occurring in a local population, and one probable example of pre-Columbian syphilis.

[Radiological and anthropometric analysis of the symmetry and direction of evolution of skulls from some historic populations].

INTRODUCTION: Asymmetry is a common phenomenon in nature. It is typical for the human body and for the skull as its part. Knowledge of asymmetry and normal anatomy, especially of variability which does not represent pathology but distinguishes individuals is the basis for correct interpretation of radiological findings concerning the skull both in research and diagnostic examinations widely performed in surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, internal medicine, or pediatrics. Analysis of fluctuating asymmetry reveals the influence of stress factors on human development and the ability of the organis

Growth-related shape changes in the fetal craniofacial complex of humans (Homo sapiens) and pigtailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina): a 3D-CT comparative analysis.

This study investigates whether macaques and humans possess a common pattern of relative growth during the fetal period. The fetal samples consist of 16 male pigtailed macaques (mean age, 20.5 gestational weeks) and 17 humans (9 males and 8 females; mean age, 29.5 gestational weeks). For each individual, three-dimensional coordinates of 18 landmarks on the skull were collected from three-dimensional computed tomographic (CT) reconstructed images and two-dimensional CT axial slices. Early and late groups were created from the human (early mean age, 24 weeks, N = 8; late mean age, 34 weeks, N =

Craniofacial profile in Asian and white subjects with obstructive sleep apnoea.

BACKGROUND: Clinical detection of structural narrowing of the upper airway may facilitate early recognition of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). To determine whether the craniofacial profile predicts the presence of OSA, the upper airway and craniofacial structure of 239 consecutive patients (164 Asian and 75 white subjects) referred to two sleep centres (Hong Kong and Vancouver) were prospectively examined for suspected sleep disordered breathing. METHODS: All subjects underwent a history and physical examination with measurements of anthropometric parameters and craniofacial structure includi

Communicating hydrocephalus following surgery and adjuvant radiochemotherapy for glioblastoma.

OBJECT: Communicating hydrocephalus is an uncommon complication in patients treated for glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Its pathogenesis remains unclear. The authors evaluated the clinical and radiological factors associated with the onset of communicating hydrocephalus and the impact of ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt surgery on the outcome of these patients. METHODS: One hundred twenty-four patients harboring GBM, who had undergone craniotomy for tumor resection and adjuvant radiochemotherapy, were retrospectively assessed. Seven of them developed communicating hydrocephalus and were treated
