Neural dynamics during the generation and evaluation of creative and non-creative ideas.

What are the neural dynamics that drive creative thinking? The interaction between the executive control, default mode, and salience brain networks is an important marker of individual differences in creativity. However, how these networks might be recruited dynamically during the two key components of the creative process-generation and evaluation of ideas-remains far from understood. We applied state-of-the-art network neuroscience methodologies to examine the neural dynamics related to the generation and evaluation of creative and non-creative ideas, at the whole- and brain-networks levels.

Creativity and the role of the leader.

In today's innovation-driven economy, understanding how to generate great ideas has become an urgent managerial priority. Suddenly, the spotlight has turned on the academics who've studied creativity for decades. How relevant is their research to the practical challenges leaders face? To connect theory and practice, Harvard Business School professors Amabile and Khaire convened a two-day colloquium of leading creativity scholars and executives from companies such as Google, IDEO, Novartis, Intuit, and E Ink. In this article, the authors present highlights of the research presented and the disc

Creativity From Constraint Exploration and Exploitation.

Using the frameworks of creativity as problem solving and Integrated Constraints in Creativity (IConIC), this article develops the proposal that creativity is best understood in terms of a cycle of constraint exploration and exploitation. This general thesis, which applies to varied domains and levels of creativity, is supported by three specific proposals about the role of constraints in creativity, each of which is developed and illustrated with examples. First, constraints provide the criteria for the evaluation of creative outcomes, which can vary as a function of the emphasis on novel use

Creativity Doesn't Develop in a Vacuum.

The skills, knowledge, attitudes, motivations, and personality traits that lead to creative thinking and creative behavior do not exist-and do not develop-in a vacuum. They are inextricably tied to content, to domains, in particular, and they therefore vary by domains. The more we learn about creativity, the more we discover how domain specific creativity is. This means we cannot nurture creativity, or any of the skills or attributes that contribute to creativity, without thinking about content. One cannot become physically fit by doing just one kind of exercise that trains a single set of mus

Creativity in alcoholic and nonalcoholic families.

A battery of creativity tests was administered to 56 families (fathers, mothers, and their pubescent sons) representing three groups. Group A+ was comprised of recovering alcoholic fathers with a family history of alcoholism (n = 19). Group NA+ consisted of nonalcoholic fathers with a family history of alcoholism (n = 18). Group NA- was composed of nonalcoholic fathers without a family history of alcoholism (n = 19). None of the mothers or sons in these three family groups was alcoholic. All subjects completed the Creativity Personality Scale, the four Origence/Intellectence scales from the Ad

Developmental dyslexia and creativity: A meta-analysis.

Despite difficulties in reading and writing, some research suggests that dyslexia may be related to higher levels of creativity. However, this pattern is not consistently observed. The current research sought to ascertain whether individuals with clinically diagnosed dyslexia exhibit higher creativity than controls through a meta-analysis. Fourteen studies that assessed the creativity of 397 individuals with clinically diagnosed dyslexia and 453 controls were reviewed. Random-effects meta-analysis revealed an overall non-significant difference in creativity scores between those with dyslexia a

Schizophrenia and creativity: A meta-analytic review.

The present study investigated the relationship between creativity and schizophrenia with a 3-level multilevel meta-analytic approach. Analyses with 200 effect sizes obtained from 42 studies found a mean effect size of r=-0.324, 95%CI [-0.42, -0.23]. Further analyses focused on moderators and indicated that the relationship between schizophrenia and creativity is moderated by type of creativity measure, the content of creativity measure, the severity of schizophrenia, and patient status. The negative mean effect size was stronger with semantic-category or verbal-letter fluency tasks than the d

Creativity and Bipolar Disorder: Igniting a Dialogue.

Bipolar disorder (BD) has been related to heightened creativity, yet core questions remain unaddressed about this association. We used qualitative methods to investigate how highly creative individuals with BD understand the role of symptoms and treatment in their creativity, and possible mechanisms underpinning this link. Twenty-two individuals self-identified as highly creative and living with BD took part in focus groups and completed quantitative measures of symptoms, quality of life (QoL), and creativity. Using thematic analysis, five themes emerged: the pros and cons of mania for creativ

Schizotypy, creativity and mating success in humans.

There is an evolutionary puzzle surrounding the persistence of schizophrenia, since it is substantially heritable and associated with sharply reduced fitness. However, some of the personality traits which are predictive of schizophrenia are also associated with artistic creativity. Geoffrey Miller has proposed that artistic creativity functions to attract mates. Here, we investigate the relationship between schizotypal personality traits, creative activity, and mating success in a large sample of British poets, visual artists, and other adults. We show that two components of schizotypy are pos

Patters of creative thinking in preadolescents with dyslexia: School level differences in the figural creative advantage.

Although research on creativity and dyslexia produced contrasting results, accumulated evidence suggests that the characteristics associated with dyslexia may underlie the creative advantage often reported in the literature. Rather than a general creative advantage in individuals with dyslexia, empirical findings pointed at strengths in specific sub-processes of creative thinking. While previous studies have attempted to identify the cognitive mechanisms that explain the dyslexic creative benefit, the role of age has been scarcely investigated, especially during school transitions. To explore

Common brain activation and connectivity patterns supporting the generation of creative uses and creative metaphors.

Recent studies and reviews suggest that creative thinking is at least partly a domain-general cognitive ability, dependent on consistent patterns of brain activity including co-activation of the executive control and default mode networks. However, the degree to which the generation of ideas in different creative tasks relies on common brain activity remains unknown. In this fMRI study, participants were asked to generate creative ideas in both a uses generation task and a metaphor production task. Whole-brain analysis showed that generation of creative uses (relative to conventional uses) act

Unleashing creativity: The role of left temporoparietal regions in evaluating and inhibiting the generation of creative ideas.

Human creativity is thought to entail two processes. One is idea generation, whereby ideas emerge in an associative manner, and the other is idea evaluation, whereby generated ideas are evaluated and screened. Thus far, neuroimaging studies have identified several brain regions as being involved in creativity, yet only a handful of studies have examined the neural basis underlying these two processes. We found that an individual with left temporoparietal hemorrhage who had no previous experience as an artist developed remarkable artistic creativity, which diminished as the hemorrhage receded.

Catastrophe and Creativity: From Fragmentation to Emergence.

This paper explores Ferenczi's path towards truth: the honest emotional link between patient and analyst that occurs first and foremost on a somatic level. The body does not lie. However, the perceptual registration of the soma when used defensively can be destructive instead of creative. The paper explores truth as it relates to the beauty of love and the catastrophe of loss. It follows emotion in relationship, thought as a reflection of intersubjectivity, and the role these play in structuralizing of mind. All these processes are both catastrophic and creative. They are essential for truth t

Creativity in bipolar disorder: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Based on studies of the biographies of artists and on research in which modern diagnostic criteria were applied, it has been suggested that there is a relationship between bipolar disorder (BD) and creativity. Objective: To investigate the relationship between BD and creativity and whether creative capacity varies depending on mood state. METHOD: We conducted a systematic search of the scientific literature indexed on the PubMed, ISI Web of Science, PsycINFO, and SciELO databases using the terms "bipolar" OR "bipolar disorder" OR "mania" OR "manic" AND "creativ*".
