The cri du chat syndrome or 5p deletion syndrome is a well-delineated clinical entity and has an incidence of 1/50,000 in newborn infants. A de novo deletion is present in 85% of the patients. Ten to 15% are familial cases with more than 90% due to a parental translocation and 5% due to an inversion of chromosome 5. Although the size of the deleted segment varies, the critical segment that is deleted in all patients appears to be 5p15.2. The clinical picture is well known in younger patients and includes the typical high-pitched cry, psychomotor retardation, microcephaly, growth rate failure,

A case of 45,X,del(5)(p14/45,X,t(Y;5)(q11;p14) mosaicism is described. The patient displays the clinical features of the Cri du Chat syndrome, together with gross malformation of the distal left arm. The presence of male sex development is consistent with the location of factor(s) controlling the male sex determination in the paracentromeric area of the Y chromosome.

The cri du chat syndrome (CdCS) is a chromosomal deletion syndrome associated with a partial deletion of the short (p) arm of chromosome 5. We describe five children who were diagnosed to have CdCS by conventional cytogenetic analysis. The deletion was at 5p15 in four patients, whereas the fifth had a larger, more proximal deletion at 5p14. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis confirmed the deletion of the CdCS critical region at 5p15.2. All five children had global developmental delay and dysmorphism with microcephaly. The other clinical features were variable. Since the clinica

Prenatal diagnosis of cri-du-chat syndrome is described in 2 pregnancies. In Case 1, the mother was a balanced translocation carrier and had 2 previously affected off springs. Prenatal diagnosis by chorion villus sampling and cordocentesis was successful in diagnosing an affected conceptus and the pregnancy was electively terminated. Case 2 was referred for nonimmune foetal hydrops and cordocentesis revealed deletion 5p. This second case was noteworthy for the fact that deletion 5p has not been reported to cause foetal hydrops.

Developmental and behavioural characteristics were assessed in 27 children with cri du chat syndrome using the Society for the Study of Behavioural Phenotypes questionnaire, which gave information on prenatal and perinatal conditions, neurological problems, and developmental and behavioural difficulties. The findings suggest that the behavioural profile of children with cri du chat syndrome incorporates self injurious behaviour, repetitive movements, hypersensitivity to sound, clumsiness, and obsessive attachments to objects. In terms of a developmental profile, children with cri du chat syndr

AIM: The Cri du Chat syndrome (SCdC / [OMIM #123450]) is a rare disease characterized by the deletion of the short arm of chromosome 5. The typical clinical features are the cat-like cry, microcephaly, a distinct facial phenotype and a severe psychomotor and mental retardation. The aim of this study was to provide an analysis on the data concerning the life quality and families assistance to whom have a child affected by Cri du Chat syndrome such as: the life's change of parents after the child's birth, the frequency of treatments, the collaboration between family and center of reference.

BACKGROUND: Cri du chat syndrome (CCS) is a genetic disorder resulting from the deletion of the short arm of chromosome 5. Perhaps the most distinctive characteristic of this syndrome is the congenital high-pitched cry, which frequently brings these patients to the attention of an otolaryngologist. Speech and language development in children with CCS is notable for a reduced receptive vocabulary and a profound deficit in expressive language. Currently, no clear guidelines have been established for the treatment of the speech and language difficulties exhibited by these patients. In this articl

A deletion of the short arm of chromosome No. 5 has been termed the cri du chat (cat cry) syndrome. We report the first ophthalmologic examination of a newborn infant with this syndrome. Multiple ophthalmic abnormalities were found, including hypertelorism, telecanthus, epicanthal folds, antimongoloid palpebral fissures, exotropia, optic atrophy, and tortuosity of the retinal vasculature. It is of interest that these changes are congenital and present at birth, rather than developmental. Although such individuals are usually so severely mentally retarded that no ophthalmologic intervention is

Cri du chat syndrome (CdCS) is a chromosomal disorder resulting from a deletion in the short arm of chromosome 5. Anatomical abnormalities of the larynx result in a distinctive high-pitched, cat-like cry for which the disorder is named. Typical findings of the syndrome involve the upper airway, cardiovascular, and central nervous system (CNS). Of particular concern during anesthetic care is the potential for airway abnormalities leading to difficulties with endotracheal intubation as well as the presence of congenital heart disease (CHD). We present a 15-month-old child with CdCS who required

Cri du chat syndrome is an inherited disease affecting multiple organ systems. Most characteristic is the anatomical abnormality of the larynx resulting in a cat-like cry. Issues important in developing an anaesthetic plan include: anatomical abnormalities of the airway, congenital heart disease, hypotonia, mental retardation, and temperature maintenance. We report the case of a 33-month-old patient with cri du chat syndrome undergoing patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) ligation and discuss the anaesthetic issues.

Cri-du-chat syndrome (CdCS) is a rare genetic disorder in which the short arm of chromosome 5 is deleted. This report aims to highlight a rare association with the syndrome. We present a preterm male delivered at 35 weeks gestation with an antenatal diagnosis of meningomyelocele. The patient's clinical examination revealed ruptured lumbosacral meningomyelocele, lower limb hypotonia, and hyporeflexia. The patient also displayed dysmorphic features, including microcephaly, a rounded face, low-set ears, and club feet. In addition, he is noted to have a high-pitched cry. Diagnosis of Chiari tonsil

Data for 331 cri du chat cases, including 34 Danish probands, are reviewed. The incidence nad the prevalence among the mentally retarded population amounted to 1/45,000 and 1.5/1000, respectively. No striking association with prenatal events, parental ages, or birth order could be demonstrated. There was a significant excess of females. Parental translocations were present in slightly more than 10% of the families, while more rare cytogenetic aberrations (mosaicism, rings, and de novo translocations) accounted for less than 10% of all cases. The phenotypically relevant segment has been narrowe

BACKGROUND: This case report describes an infrequent instance of risperidone-induced hyperprolactinemia in a 23-year-old nonverbal male with cri du chat syndrome.
CASE PRESENTATION: Risperidone, initially prescribed to manage aggressive behaviors, resulted in bilateral gynecomastia and hyperprolactinemia. Tapering of risperidone led to resolution of these symptoms but exposed a resurgence of excessive masturbation, a behavior previously suppressed by the medication. Reintroduction of risperidone controlled this behavior, suggesting its potential role in managing compulsive behaviors in this p

Using standard banding techniques, a within-arm intrachromosomal insertion can be mistakenly interpreted as a paracentric inversion. The need to correctly distinguish between these two types of chromosome rearrangements is emphasized by their different reproductive risks. For carriers of an intrachromosomal insertion, the empiric risk of having a liveborn child with a recombinant chromosome leading to a genetic imbalance is at least 15%, whereas the risk for a carrier of a paracentric inversion having a liveborn child with a recombinant chromosome leading to a genetic imbalance is thought to b

Cri-du-chat (CdC) is a 5p chromosomal deletion syndrome. CdC has numerous systemic associations but only a few ocular manifestations have been documented. In this report we present novel ocular findings of peripheral avascular retina and retinal hemorrhages in a full-term female infant, born to non-consanguineous parents, who had clinical features of cri-du-chat syndrome and genetic confirmation. The retinal hemorrhages resolved. However, the temporal avascular retina in our full-term patient remained. Further analysis of the 5p locus showed 3 genes: CTNND2, SEMA5A and SLC6A18 that not only fi

This patients is a 48-day-old girl, born as the third child from a 29-year-old healthy mother. The pregnancy was uneventful, and the delivery was normal. Right after birth, she had episode of asphyxia for several minutes. Her weight of birth was 2,600 g, and the head circumference was 30.4 cm. Dyspnea and cyanosis after feeding were noted on the second day. At the time of admission to our service, she showed typical symptoms of "cri-du-chat" syndrome, namely, characteristic cry, mental retardation (DQ was 48), microcephaly (head circumference was 34.5 cm), rounded face, hypertelorism, oblique

BACKGROUND: Congenital vertical talus is a rare deformity of the foot which can cause substantial pain and disability. Its incidence is approximately 1 in 100,000 live births. It has an association with other neuromuscular abnormalities and identified genetic syndromes in 50% of cases [1-5]. This report presents a case of congenital vertical talus in an infant with Cri du Chat Syndrome (CdCS) which - to our knowledge - has not been previously reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 2 week-old Caucasian, male infant was referred for congenital feet abnormalities and a "clicky" hip at the post-natal bab

We describe a 6-year-old child who presented the phenotype of cri-du-chat disease. The study of her caryotype confirmed an interstitial deletion of the short arm of chromosome 5. The neurological examination showed mental retardation, behavioral disturbances and features of cerebellar and cortico-spinal impairment. The MRI scan of the brain showed hypoplasia of the vermis associated with dysgenesia of the corpus callosum. This is the first report of vermian hypoplasia in cri-du-chat disease. We suggest that the most likely pathogenesis of this malformation is a midline dysraphia.

A newborn male with cri-du-chat syndrome, congenital nuclear cataracts, microspherophakia, and probably ectopic lenses is reported. Microspherophakia in cri-du-chat syndrome has not been previously described. The congenital cataracts were inherited from his mother who had a balanced 5;13 translocation; the two events are considered to be coincidental and a possible 'position effect' was excluded, since the other members of her family with congenital cataracts, were chromosomally normal. This is the fourth case reported where familial cri-du-chat syndrome involves chromosomes 5p and 13q.
