Pfeiffer syndrome is one of a group of craniosynostosis syndromes in which rare tracheal anomalies have been described. This group of patients have a poor prognosis, and mortality can be related to airway complications and respiratory distress. We report a case of type II Pfeiffer syndrome with tracheal cartilaginous sleeve and cricoid cartilage involvement. We discuss our strategy for the management of the airway of this patient.

Several open and endoscopic surgical techniques are available to provide an adequate airway for patients with bilateral vocal cord paralysis. Transoral laser arytenoidectomy has repeatedly been reported to be a reliable and effective minimally invasive procedure for airway restoration. To our knowledge, there have been no previous reports of serious complications, other than poor vocal results, aspiration, and failed decannulation in individual patients, that have resulted from this intervention. We report a case in which arytenoidectomy led to severe complications and death. Prior irradiation

Chondronecrosis of the cricoid cartilage is a rare complication of intubation. The records of two children were reviewed. An 8-month-old girl with myelomonocytic leukaemia developed chondronecrosis 10 days after a 2-day period of ventilation. A 4-year-old girl comatose after poisoning by the histamine antagonist, alimemazine, developed chondronecrosis after a 2-day period of intubation. The complication was suspected when extubation led to dyspnoea owing to laryngeal stridor and was confirmed by direct laryngoscopy. We review the development of the condition, the causative factors, treatment a

An elliptically shaped cricoid cartilage, a specific type of congenital subglottic stenosis, is described, and the laryngoscopic and radiographic findings in three cases are discussed. An "hourglass" deformity of the subglottic laryngeal airway on an anteroposterior airway radiograph is suggestive of this diagnosis.

The aims of this observational, analytical, retrospective study were to (i) obtain computed tomographic (CT) cricoid dimensions (height, width, and transverse-sectional area), (ii) compare the cricoid dimensions between brachycephalic and mesaticephalic breeds, and (iii) compare cricoid cartilage dimensions between dogs without and affected with brachycephalic airway syndrome. The study is important to help to further evaluate and understand the anatomical components of brachycephalic airway syndrome. Measurements were performed in 147 brachycephalic and 59 mesaticephalic dogs. The cricoid car

Laryngeal chondrosarcomas are a rare class of laryngeal tumor arising from the various cartilages in the larynx. Despite their generally benign nature, removal of laryngeal chondrosarcomas is essential as the tumor often obstructs the larynx resulting in vocal defects and can impede breathing in advanced cases. In this case, we present a 61-yearold male with a low-grade laryngeal chondrosarcoma arising from the cricoid cartilage. The patient presented with a long history of hoarseness accompanied by normal physical exam and lab findings. After CT imaging showed a laryngeal mass, biopsy and his

INTRODUCTION: Laryngeal chondrosarcomas are an extremely rare class of tumor accounting for only 1% of all laryngeal tumors. The cricoid cartilage is the most common cartilage from which laryngeal chondrosarcomas arise however, it is also the most difficult to treat as the cricoid cartilage is vital for structural support in the larynx. In this study, we describe a case of low-grade laryngeal chondrosarcoma that arose in the cricoid cartilage and was treated with laser resection while retaining full function of the larynx.
CASE REPORT: The patient was a 61-year-old man who presented with a tw

The cricoid cartilage has been regarded as an extremely important organ because it plays important role in both of phonation and breathing. We herein report on two different types of surgical procedure for laryngotracheal diseases with aggressive resection of the cricoid cartilage. The first procedure is a tracheostomaplasty by partial resection of the cricoid cartilage. A tracheostoma is made by resection of the cricoid cartilage in the range of approximately a one-third front. This method is effective for such cases having difficulty in tracheostomy owing their backgrounds with such conditio

An aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a type of reactive reparative bone neoplasm that rarely occurs in the head and neck. To date, only a small number of cases have been previously reported. The present study reports the case of a 58-year-old male who presented with a tumor in the laryngeal cricoid cartilage, a rare position for a tumor, who subsequently underwent treatment by surgical resection. Based on the observations of the present study and a literature review, it was concluded that an ABC of the larynx can be identified based on a combination of radiology and postoperative histopathology ex

This article presents the case of a 37-year-old female patient who was admitted to the hospital with a sore throat after accidentally ingesting a chicken bone. Multiple computed tomography scans revealed a striated hyperdense shadow along the posterior pharyngeal wall, which was initially misdiagnosed as an esophageal foreign body. However, subsequent endoscopic evaluations failed to identify any foreign object. After further imaging studies and multidisciplinary consultation, the final diagnosis was physiologic calcification of the posterior lamina of the cricoid cartilage. This case highligh

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe the sonographic appearance of the uncalcified cricoid cartilage in pediatric patients and illustrate how this can be easily confused with a thyroid mass or residual thyroid tissue after thyroidectomy.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the sonographic and computed tomographic examinations performed on 4 adolescent patients. Two patients had either thyroid cancer or thyroid nodules, and 2 healthy patients were reviewed to show normal anatomy. Results were compared with the clinical and surgical findings in each patient.
RESULTS: Computed

Cricoid chondronecrosis is a rare entity and is scarcely reported in the literature. Its prevalence is increasing in the form of chondroradionecrosis among the survivorship of head and neck carcinoma patients treated with radiotherapy. We have reported a case of cricoid chondronecroisis caused by trauma from repeated tracheostomy. The patient presented with hoarseness and dyspnoea. Radiological findings in multidetector computed tomography showed disintegration of the cricoid and confirmed the diagnosis. Conservative treatment was given in the form of antibiotics, steroids and nebulised antich

In Mexico, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death in men. Prostate cancer usually presents metastasis to the regional lymph nodes and bone. Hereby, we present an unusual case of metastatic prostate cancer, with affectation to the cricoid cartilage and oral cavity, being the first case to have ever been reported in Mexico. A 68-year-old Mexican man was diagnosed with prostate cancer and cribriform architecture histology with low serum level of prostate-specific antigen, debuting with laryngeal stridor. The biopsy came back positive for metastatic prostate carcinoma. During treatme

Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is an uncommon tumor of the plasma cells, and EMP of the cricoid cartilage is extremely rare The present study reports the rare case of a 43-year-old male complaining of hoarseness and dyspnea for over a year. Computed tomography imaging of the neck revealed an occupying lesion in the cricoid cartilage, and a diagnosis of EMP was subsequently confirmed by histopathological evaluation. The patient underwent surgery, but refused radiotherapy against medical advice. One year later, the patient was diagnosed with a recurrence of EMP via pathological examination an

We report the case of a 60-year-old man with a 12-day history of vomiting whenever he had a meal. Computed tomography revealed a calcified mass in the right cricoid cartilage with intraluminal and extraluminal extension. The patient underwent surgical resection of the trachea with end-to-end anastomosis. Pathological examination of the surgical specimen showed a low-grade chondrosarcoma. Eighteen months after surgery, the patient is alive and disease-free.
