Critical role of the neural pathway from the intermediate medial mesopallium to the intermediate hyperpallium apicale in filial imprinting of domestic chicks (Gallus gallus domesticus).

Filial imprinting in precocial birds is a useful model for studying early learning and cognitive development, as it is characterized by a well-defined sensitive or critical period. We recently showed that the thyroid hormone 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3) determines the onset of the sensitive period. Moreover, exogenous injection of T3 into the intermediate medial mesopallium (IMM) region (analogous to the associative cortex in mammals) enables imprinting even on post-hatch day 4 or 6 when the sensitive period has been terminated. However, the neural mechanisms downstream from T3 action in the I

Biosocial perspectives on the development of the proceptive, acceptive and conceptive phases of eroticism.

The absence of an interdisciplinary science of sexology has resulted in sexuality being narrowly defined by the particular ideology of the various scientific disciplines. This review presents a theoretical model to integrate the interdisciplinary data related to the development of the three phases of eroticism. A biosocial integration of the multiple aspects of eroticism will hopefully generate research and psychotherapeutic innovations not plagued by mind-body dichotomization. The emphasis of this paper is on the solicitation, attraction and pair-bonding phase of eroticism, since this has bee

Bidirectional regulation of Munc13-3 protein expression by age and dark rearing during the critical period in mouse visual cortex.

Rearing in darkness slows the time course of the visual cortical critical period, such that at 5 weeks of age normal cats are more plastic than dark-reared cats, while at 20 weeks dark-reared cats are more plastic [Mower GD (1991) The effect of dark rearing on the time course of the critical period in cat visual cortex. Dev Brain Res 58:151-158]. Thus, genes that are important for visual cortical plasticity should show differences in expression between normal and dark-reared visual cortex that are of opposite direction in young versus older animals. Previously, we showed by differential displa

The evolution of the critical period for language acquisition.

Evidence suggests that there is a critical, or at least a sensitive, period for language acquisition, which ends around puberty. The existence of this period is explained by an evolutionary model which assumes that (a) linguistic ability is in principle (if not in practice) measurable, and (b) the amount of language controlled by an individual conferred selective advantage on it. In this model, the language faculty is seen as adaptive, favoured by natural selection, while the critical period for language acquisition itself is not an adaptation, but arises from the interplay of genetic factors

Critical period for pupal commitment in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

Changes in ecdysteroid levels that lead to commitment of pupal and adult development were studied in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. Application of juvenile hormone at the time of pupal commitment usually results in delay or blockage of pupal and adult development. With methoprene, a juvenile hormone mimic, the JH sensitive period was found to be within 19 h after ecdysis to the fourth instar, at which time methoprene treatment caused a delay in pupation. Consistent with this observation, there was a small peak of ecdysteroid levels between 14 and 28 h after ecdysis to the fourth ins

A longitudinal study of the etiology of separation anxiety.

A longitudinal examination of the relation between separation experiences and the development of separation anxiety at age 3, 11 and 18 years was conducted. Three associative pathways were assessed. Conditioning events were not related to separation anxiety at age 3. Vicarious learning (modelling) in middle childhood (age 9 years) was the conditioning variable most strongly related to separation anxiety at age 11, accounting for 1.8% of the variance in symptoms. Separation experiences (hospitalisations) before the age of 9 were inversely correlated with separation anxiety at age 18. That is, m

Congenital cervical spinal cord lesions: pathogenesis, management, and outcome.

Three patients (2 boys) presented with nontraumatic congenital lesions of the spinal cord resulting in paralysis and contractures of their upper limbs from birth. Limited improvement occurred in all. Two survived. One patient required ventilation support after birth; his upper limbs had lower motor neuron flaccid paralysis, and his lower limbs evolved to pyramidal tract impairment. He died at 9 months of age with an intercurrent chest infection. The other 2 patients had lower motor neuron pathology in their upper limbs and normal lower limb function. One of these patients attained ambulation.

Are there critical periods for musical development?

A critical period can be defined as a developmental window during which specific experience has a greater effect than at other times. Musical behavior involves many skills, including the basic encoding of pitch and time information, understanding scale and harmonic structure, performance, interpretation, and composition. We review studies of genetics, behavior, and brain structure and function in conjunction with the experiences of auditory deprivation and musical enrichment, and conclude that there is more supporting evidence for critical periods for basic than for more complex aspects of mus

Puberty as a critical risk period for eating disorders: a review of human and animal studies.

This article is part of a Special Issue "Puberty and Adolescence". Puberty is one of the most frequently discussed risk periods for the development of eating disorders. Prevailing theories propose environmentally mediated sources of risk arising from the psychosocial effects (e.g., increased body dissatisfaction, decreased self-esteem) of pubertal development in girls. However, recent research highlights the potential role of ovarian hormones in phenotypic and genetic risk for eating disorders during puberty. The goal of this paper is to review data from human and animal studies in support of

Identification of α-chimaerin as a candidate gene for critical period neuronal plasticity in cat and mouse visual cortex.

BACKGROUND: In cat visual cortex, critical period neuronal plasticity is minimal until approximately 3 postnatal weeks, peaks at 5 weeks, gradually declines to low levels at 20 weeks, and disappears by 1 year of age. Dark rearing slows the entire time course of this critical period, such that at 5 weeks of age, normal cats are more plastic than dark reared cats, whereas at 20 weeks, dark reared cats are more plastic. Thus, a stringent criterion for identifying genes that are important for plasticity in visual cortex is that they show differences in expression between normal and dark reared tha

Imprinting and cortical plasticity: a comparative review.

Results of research on imprinting and developmental neurobiology of the visual cortex are compared to evaluate the evidence for or against a frequently hypothesized linkage of the two phenomena. The comparison reveals striking similarities. In both paradigms a sensitive period exists. Once this sensitive period is over, the storage of early influences from the environment remains stable throughout life. Storage of "natural" stimuli is facilitated by a certain preorganisation of the receiving brain areas. It is stated that the two phenomena are not directly linked, but are two expressions of a

Visual acuity and the developing visual system.

The objective measurement of visual acuity in infants is reviewed. Recent techniques have shown that visual acuity levels as early as four to six months after birth. This and other evidence indicates that the most sensitive period in the development of the visual system may be during the first six months of life. With this as a rationale, it is suggested that eye care practitioners consider eye examinations and correction of refractive errors during infancy as a means of prevention of future strabismus and amblyopia.

Perinatal Period: Psychological Functioning of Fathers During the First 1000 days of Child's Life.

The first 1,000 days of life represent a critical phase for child development and may have a significant impact on parents' psychological functioning. While numerous studies have focused on mothers, limited data are currently available regarding the potential psychological changes experienced by fathers during this perinatal period. This study aimed to explore the fathers' mental health during the perinatal period. A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted among 76 French-speaking fathers in Belgium. Participants were divided into two groups: fathers in the perinatal period (n = 51) an

Psychedelics reopen the social reward learning critical period.

Psychedelics are a broad class of drugs defined by their ability to induce an altered state of consciousness1,2. These drugs have been used for millennia in both spiritual and medicinal contexts, and a number of recent clinical successes have spurred a renewed interest in developing psychedelic therapies3-9. Nevertheless, a unifying mechanism that can account for these shared phenomenological and therapeutic properties remains unknown. Here we demonstrate in mice that the ability to reopen the social reward learning critical period is a shared property across psychedelic drugs. Notably, the ti

Disruption of Critical Period Plasticity in a Mouse Model of Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a common monogenic neurodevelopmental disorder associated with physical and cognitive problems. The cognitive issues are thought to arise from increased release of the neurotransmitter GABA. Modulating the signaling pathways causing increased GABA release in a mouse model of NF1 reverts deficits in hippocampal learning. However, clinical trials based on these approaches have so far been unsuccessful. We therefore used a combination of slice electrophysiology, in vivo two-photon calcium imaging, and optical imaging of intrinsic signal in a mouse model of NF1 to

Neonatal enucleation during a critical period reduces the precision of cortico-cortical projections in visual cortex.

Previous studies have reported that intrahemispheric connections between area 17 (V1, striate cortex) and other cortical visual areas are not point-to-point, but instead have some degree of convergence and divergence. Many pathological conditions can interfere with the normal development of patterns of cortico-cortical connections, but there is little information regarding whether or not early pathological insults can also induce permanent changes in the convergence and divergence of cortical connections. Obtaining this information is important because loss of precision in neural projections c
