An Unusual Presentation of Cronkhite-Canada Syndrome With Hypothyroidism.

Background: Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a rare, nonhereditary gastrointestinal polyposis characterized by diffuse polyps, hyperpigmentation, onychodystrophy, and alopecia. Hypothyroidism has been infrequently reported in association with CCS. Case Presentation: A Caucasian male in his late 70s presented with dysgeusia, asthenia, and significant weight loss, initially diagnosed with Crohn's disease. Physical examination showed onychodystrophy, hyperpigmentation, and leg edema. Laboratory tests revealed severe hypothyroidism, hypoalbuminemia, and elevated serum IgG-4 levels. Upper and low

Aplastic Anemia in a Patient with Cronkhite-Canada Syndrome.

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a rare polyposis disorder accompanied by alopecia and onychodystrophy. A 63-year-old man with a history of CCS and repeated embolism developed progressive thrombocytopenia and mild anemia. Laboratory testing, a bone marrow examination, and magnetic resonance imaging of the spine resulted in a diagnosis of concurrent aplastic anemia (AA). Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH)-type cells were detected in a peripheral blood specimen. In addition, human leukocyte antigen (HLA) included DRB1*15:01 and DRB1*15:02. Mesalazine was discontinued in consideration of

[New observations in a case of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome].

We report about a 76 years old patient with Cronkhite-Canada syndrome. The diagnosis has been found with the following clinical symptoms: diarrhea, anorexia, alopecia, and onychotrophia. Laboratory values: severe hypoproteinemia (total serum protein 4.3 g/dl, albumin 2.4 g/dl); endoscopical and radiological findings: a generalized polyposis which involved the whole intestine except the oesophagus. As far as we saw in our literature-overview of 55 patients with Cronkhite-Canada syndrome, this patient had for the first time a carcinoma of the urinary bladder and a Bricker operation 17 years befo

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome: from clinical features to treatment.

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a rare acquired polyposis with unknown etiology. To date, >500 cases have been reported worldwide. CCS is typically characterized by gastrointestinal symptoms, such as diarrhea and skin changes (e.g. alopecia, pigmentation, and nail atrophy). Endoscopic features include diffuse polyps throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract, except for the esophagus. Pathological types of polyps in CCS mainly include inflammatory, hyperplastic, hamartomatous, and adenomatous polyps. CCS can be complicated by many diseases and has a canceration tendency with a high mortal

Cronkhite-Canada Syndrome Complicated by Triple Primary Cancers.

We herein report a case of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) complicated with triple primary cancers. The patient was diagnosed with CCS at 65 years of age. At 76 years of age, one of his colon polyps was diagnosed as adenocarcinoma. At 81 years of age, gastric carcinoma was detected. Weight loss and fatigue appeared one month before he visited our hospital. An examination revealed dilatation of the intrahepatic bile duct. Cholangiocarcinoma was diagnosed as a result of bile duct cytology. Patients with CCS should be monitored carefully for carcinoma of systemic organs as well as the gastrointes

Acute brain syndrome as a consequence of the Cronkhite-Canada syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Cronkhite-Canada syndrome is a very rare illness and psychical disturbances developed as a consequence of this illness are very rarely described. That is the case because majority of the symptoms of this syndrome are associated with the polyposis of the gastrointestinal tract. AIM: The aim of this case report is to link the development of acute brain syndrome with this rare syndrome. PATIENT: The patient was two times treated under the diagnosis of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome in the clinics of internal medicine in Rijeka and Zagreb, and then in the Psychiatric Clinic in Rijeka unde

Exome analysis for Cronkhite-Canada syndrome: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a rare, non-genetic disorder characterized by multiple gastrointestinal polyps, and ectodermal lesions such as alopecia, fingernail atrophy, and skin mucosal pigmentation. Unfortunately, the pathogenesis of CCS is currently unknown. CASE SUMMARY: Here, we describe the case of an elderly female with diarrhea, fatigue, and hair loss, who experienced abdominal pain for over half a year and was found to have multiple gastrointestinal polyps. She was diagnosed with CCS and was treated with albumin supplementation and prednisone, and her electrolyte im

Cases Report the Cronkhite-Canada Syndrome: Improving the Prognosis.

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a rare nongenetic polyposis syndrome first reported by Cronkhite and Canada in 1955. Up to the present time, the literature consists of ∼400 cases of CCS with the majority being reported from Japan although 49 cases have been described in China.CCS is characterized by diffuse polyposis of the digestive tract in association with ectodermal changes, such as onychomadesis, alopecia, and cutaneous hyperpigmentation. The principal symptoms of CCS are diarrhea, weight loss, abdominal pain, and other gastrointestinal complications, such as protein-losing enteropathy

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome: a report of two familial cases.

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a rare syndrome first described in 1955. Since then, over 400 cases worldwide have been reported in the literature. The disease is characterized by diffuse gastrointestinal polyposis, dystrophic changes of the fingernails, alopecia, cutaneous hyperpigmentation, diarrhea, weight loss, and abdominal pain. An autoimmune etiology is suspected. The workup is based on history and physical examination, imaging, and endoscopy with biopsy to confirm gastrointestinal polyposis. Nutritional support and corticosteroids are the mainstay of treatment. Here, we describe two

Juvenile gastrointestinal polyposis or the infantile Cronkhite-Canada syndrome.

This is a report of a case of juvenile gastrointestinal polyposis consisting of widespread juvenile polyps encountered from the stomach into the rectum. Only few cases have been reported, and extra intestinal manifestations include clubbing of fingers, macrocephaly, hypotonia, hepatosplenomegaly, anemia, and protein-losing enteropathy. The outcome is usually dismal, the children barely becoming older than 2 years. Modern fibreoptic endoscopy with polypectomies performed via the upper and lower gastrointestinal intestinal tracts and via a midbowel ileostomy may offer a viable form of management

Cronkhite-Canada Syndrome: A Rare Cause of Chronic Diarrhea.

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a rare non-hereditary disease characterized by chronic diarrhea, diffuse intestinal polyposis and onychodystrophy. We present here a case of a middle-aged female who presented with chronic intermittent bloody diarrhea associated alopecia and loss of finger and toe nails. Labs were remarkable for microcytic anemia and severe hypoalbuminemia. Endoscopy showed numerous polyps scattered throughout the colon. She was treated with nutritional support and corticosteroid with complete resolution of her symptoms and endoscopic findings. CCS is associated with high mor

Case report-malignant transformation in Cronkhite-Canada syndrome polyp.

RATIONALE: Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a rare disease, the etiology of CCS is currently unknown. Although CCS is widely accepted as a benign disorder, the malignant potential of the polyps in CCS patients is yet controversial. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 55-year-old Chinese male was first admitted to Beijing Friendship Hospital with a 3-month history of frequent watery diarrhea (10-15 times/day), loss of taste, and a weight loss of 10 kg in August 2010. The left heel bone fracture in the patient occurred about 2 weeks prior to his diarrhea. DIAGNOSES: He was diagnosed as Cronkhite-Canada synd

Cronkhite-Canada Syndrome: A Diagnostic Challenge and Management With Vedolizumab.

BACKGROUND Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a rare, nonhereditary gastrointestinal polyposis syndrome characterized by diffuse polyps, diarrhea, malnutrition, and ectodermal changes. It can mimic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), leading to misdiagnosis and delayed treatment. Here, we present a case of CCS that was initially thought to be Crohn's disease, managed with vedolizumab, and ultimately required total parenteral nutrition (TPN) due to severe malnutrition. CASE REPORT A 65-year-old man presented with a history of 2 months of watery diarrhea, weight loss, postprandial abdominal pain,

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome: An investigation in clinical features and pathogenesis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the clinical features and potential pathogenesis of a rare nonhereditary polyposis syndrome, Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS). METHODS: Medical records of eight patients with CCS who were admitted to our hospital from January 2005 to November 2019 were reviewed. Transcriptome profiling was performed in one patient to investigate its difference between gastric polyp tissue and normal mucosa. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were determined for functional analysis. The expression of inhibin beta A (INHBA) was further assessed by using immunohistoch
