Prevalent User Bias in Cross-sectional and Longitudinal Studies: A Concept Simply Explained.

Prevalent user bias, such as in the context of treatment with medication, occurs when a medication-using sample is attenuated by the experience of medication use, separating the original sample into former users and continuing users ("prevalent users"). Recruiting a sample after such a change has occurred results in a biased sample. This is problematic when the biasing influence is relevant to the outcome being studied. Three hypothetical studies are described to illustrate prevalent user bias: a cross-sectional study, a longitudinal observational study, and a randomized controlled trial (RCT)

Impact of equine interactions on human acute pain perception: Two cross sectional studies.

BACKGROUND: Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of Animal-Assisted Therapy, usually involving dogs, as a way to reduce pain in inpatient and outpatient populations. Here two studies investigate the effectiveness of interacting with horses for reducing human acute pain perception. METHODS: In Study 1, a blood-pressure cuff was used to administer acute ischaemic pain to 70 adult participants, who were allocated to one of three groups: Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP), Horse Interaction without EAP (HI), and a Control (no horses present). All participants engaged in an activity (findi

Scrub typhus in Indonesia: A cross-sectional analysis of archived fever studies samples.

BACKGROUND: Scrub typhus is an understudied vector-borne bacterial infection. METHODS: We tested archived fever samples for scrub typhus seropositivity to begin charting its geographic distribution in Indonesia. We analysed 1033 serum samples from three sites. IgM and IgG enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) against Orientia tsutsugamushi was performed using Karp, Kato, Gilliam, TA 716 antigens. To determine the cutoff in the absence of a presumed unexposed population and gold standard tests, we identified the visual inflection point, performed change point analysis, and used finite mixt

Intolerance of uncertainty fuels depressive symptoms through rumination: Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies.

The current study replicated and extended previous studies by examining the mediating and moderating role of rumination in the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty (IU) and depression in a community sample using both cross-sectional (n = 494; 56.9% female) and a two-months longitudinal (n = 321; 48.4% female) designs. Participants in each study were recruited through online crowdsourcing websites and completed study questionnaires. Results from Study 1 suggested that, while rumination did not appear to moderate the relationship between IU and depression, rumination appeared to parti

The influence of latent toxoplasmosis on women's reproductive function: four cross-sectional studies.

Several studies have investigated the association between infection with Toxoplasma gondii (Nicolle et Manceaux, 1908), pregnancy and fertility, but the results of studies focused on the fertility are rather ambiguous. Here we report results of four new cross-sectional studies. The studies were performed in the General University Hospital, Prague (study A with n = 1 165, and study C with n = 317), in private clinics of the Centre of Reproductive Medicine, Prague (study B with n = 1 016), and in a population of Czech and Slovak volunteers from the Facebook page 'Guinea Pigs' willing to particip

Submicroscopic malaria infection is not associated with fever in cross-sectional studies in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Submicroscopic Plasmodium falciparum infections are widespread in many areas. However, the contribution of these infections to symptomatic malaria is not well understood. This study evaluated whether participants with submicroscopic P. falciparum infections have higher prevalence of fever than uninfected participants in southern Malawi. METHODS: A total of 16,650 children and adults were enrolled in the course of six cross-sectional surveys during the dry season (October-November) and after the rainy season (April-May) between 2012 and 2014 in three districts in southern Malawi. Characteristics of Neuropsychiatric Mobile Health Trials: Cross-Sectional Analysis of Studies Registered on ClinicalTrials.gov.

BACKGROUND: The development of mobile health (mHealth) technologies is progressing at a faster pace than that of the science to evaluate their validity and efficacy. Under the International Committee of Journal Medical Editors (ICMJE) guidelines, clinical trials that prospectively assign people to interventions should be registered with a database before the initiation of the study. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to better understand the smartphone mHealth trials for high-burden neuropsychiatric conditions registered on ClinicalTrials.gov through November 2018, including the number, typ

Undereporting of acute pesticide poisoning in Tanzania: modelling results from two cross-sectional studies.

BACKGROUND: Acute pesticide poisoning (APP) is known to cause serious injuries to end users globally but the magnitude of this problem in Tanzania is not well known. This study aimed to determine the extent and pattern of underreporting of APP in Tanzania to inform the development of a surveillance system and appropriate interventions. METHODS: This study integrates findings from two recent Tanzanian studies. A household survey established the proportion of poisoned farmers in a typical rural area who reported to hospital for a pesticide poisoning. Only 5 of the 112 farmers who reported atten

Cross-sectional studies of physical growth in twins. Postmature and small-for-dates children.

From 16955 live births which occurred throughout the United Kingdom in April 1970, three groups of children who might have suffered from fetal malnutrition, i.e. the multiple, postmature and small-for-dates births were selected with a 10% random sample. Their birthweights and weights, heights and head circumference measurements were compared at the ages of 22 months and 3 1/2 years. Differences between the random and postmature groups still present at 22 months disappeared at 3 1/2 years. Variations in the other groups persisted and the compensation occurring at 22 months had apparently ceased

Chronic high temperature exposure, brain structure, and mental health: Cross-sectional and prospective studies.

To investigate the association between chronic high temperature exposure and brain structure and how the association influences mental health, we conducted cross-sectional and prospective cohort studies within a sample of 41,552 UK Biobank participants. Chronic temperature exposure was assessed for each participant based on their residential histories and gridded reanalysis temperature data and defined as the percentage of days with a maximum temperature exceeding 27 °C over the last 20 years. Generalized additive models and difference-in-differences approaches were used to estimate the associ

Prognostic nomogram for uncontrolled type 2 diabetes using Thailand nation-wide cross-sectional studies.

BACKGROUND: Uncontrolled type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and limited hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels examination are a burden in community hospitals in Thailand. The nomogram from the patients' information might be a practical solution to identify a high-risk group of diabetic complications. Thus, this study aimed to establish an effective prognostic nomogram for patients with uncontrolled T2DM. METHODS: Sequential nationwide cross-sectional studies of T2DM patients in 2018 and 2015 were utilized for development and validation groups, respectively, with this chronological order aiming to capture recent

Persistent oral health inequality in children-repeated cross-sectional studies in 2010 and 2019.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Children growing up in vulnerable circumstances have a higher risk of caries experience. Tracking the development of caries in relation to socioeconomic variables over time is essential for fair resource distribution to groups with higher caries risk and to even out inequalities in oral health. The aim was therefore to analyse the association between 6-year-olds´ caries prevalence and socioeconomic variables at family and residential area levels in 2010 and 2019 as well as potential differences in the association between 2010 and 2019. METHODS: The study design is an epide

Cross-sectional and histopathological studies of Feline Coronavirus infections in stray cats in Kuwait.

Feline Coronavirus (FCoV) is a worldwide viral infection of felids. The disease is usually asymptomatic, but it can cause mild diarrhoea; however, few numbers of cases may develop a severe systemic disease known as feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). This study aims to determine the prevalence of FCoV shedding in the faeces of stray cats in Kuwait and detect antibodies against FCoV in their serum. Histopathological analyses and RT‑PCR were used to prove cases of FIP. A total of 178 cats were examined for the presence of FCoV in their faeces using a rapid immunochromatography (IC) test. Anti‑F
