Crotalaria juncea L. enhances the bioremediation of sulfentrazone-contaminated soil and promotes changes in the soil bacterial community.

Sulfentrazone (STZ) is an efficient tool for the pre- and post-emergence control of monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous weeds in fields of crops such as pineapple, coffee, sugarcane, citrus, eucalyptus, tobacco, and soybean. However, this herbicide persists in the soil, causing phytotoxicity in the subsequent crop. Therefore, it is important to use efficient strategies for the remediation of STZ-contaminated areas. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Crotalaria juncea L. on the remediation of STZ-contaminated soil and on the microbial activity and bacterial community structure

Preliminary findings of chromosomal studies on rats and humans with veno-occlusive disease.

Peripheral blood chromosome studies were performed on 9 children in the acute and recovery phase of veno-occlusive disease (VOD) of the liver, which is thought to be due to the toxic effect of fulvine, an alkaloid in Crotalaria fulva a plant consumed as a herbal remedy in Jamaica. Similar studies were performed on rats in which VOD was induced by the experimental administration of fulvine. Significant percentages of mitotic cells showing chromosomal damage in the form of gaps, breaks, dicentrics and exchanges were found in 6 children tested within 3½ months from the time of ingestion of Crotal

A pulmonary hypertension-producing plant from Tanzania.

An African youth who had died from primary pulmonary hypertension was suspected of having ingested a herbal remedy containing the seeds of the local plant Crotalaria laburnoides. Consequently powdered seeds of this plant were fed to 20 Wistar albino rats for 60 dyas to see if this would induce ventricular hypertrophy and associated hypertensive pulmonary vascular disease. At the end of the experimental period right ventricular hypertrophy, medial hypertrophy of the pulmonary trunk and 'muscular pulmonary arteries', and muscularization of the pulmonary arterioles had developed in a proportion o

Soil microbial indicators and bacterial co-occurrence networks reveal early changes under no-tillage and cover crops in a tropical Oxisol.

Improving soil quality in tropical agroecosystems requires management strategies that enhance soil functioning and ecological processes. This study evaluated whether short-term adoption of no-tillage combined with cover crops induces early changes in soil microbial indicators and bacterial co-occurrence patterns in a tropical Oxisol under soybean cultivation in the Brazilian Cerrado. Conventional plowing was compared with no-tillage systems using maize, millet, Crotalaria spp., Urochloa spp., and intercropped combinations during the off-season. After three years, microbial biomass carbon, enzy

Effect of selenium hyperaccumulation on the root endophytic and rhizosphere microbiome of two Astragalus species.

Metal hyperaccumulation is prevalent throughout plant evolution, particularly in the legume family (Fabaceae), and acts as a presumed chemical defence against herbivory. However, metal hyperaccumulation can have non-target impacts on other biological interactors, including plant-microbe interactions. This information is important given the interest in utilizing hyperaccumulating plants for phytoremediation of anthropogenically contaminated soils. Here we employ a greenhouse experiment manipulating selenium level along with 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing methods to explore the effect of sele
