Gastroprotective effect of essential oil from Croton cajucara Benth. (Euphorbiaceae).

The gastroprotective activity of the essential oil from the bark of Croton cajucara Benth (Euphorbiaceae) was assessed in three different models of experimentally induced gastric ulcer in mice. At oral dose of 100 mg/kg the essential oil reduced gastric lesions induced by hypothermic restraint stress and HCl/ethanol significantly. In the HCl/ethanol model a dose-dependent gastroprotective effect was found. Moreover, significant changes in gastric parameters such as pH, secretion rate and total gastric acid were found after intraduodenal administration of essential oil under ligated pylorus (Sh

Ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry and pharmacology: a successful combination in the study of Croton cajucara.

Phytochemical and pharmacological studies of Croton cajucara were oriented by traditional medicine. The stem bark of the mature plant is a rich source of clerodane-type diterpenes: trans-dehydrocrotonin (DCTN), trans-crotonin (CTN), cis-cajucarin B, cajucarin A, cajucarinolide and two novel clerodanes, trans-cajucarin B and sacacarin. In young (18-month-old) plants, the triterpene acetyl aleuritolic acid (AAA) was the major stem bark component and in these the diterpene DCTN was not present. The highest concentration of DCTN (1.4% of dry bark) was detected in 4-6 year-old plants, while 3-year-

Dragon's blood from Croton urucurana (Baill.) attenuates visceral nociception in mice.

Dragon's blood, the red sap from Croton urucurana Baill. (Euphorbiaceae) has a profound history of traditional use in conditions such as inflammation, diarrhoea and gastrointestinal distress. Previous studies established its anti-inflammatory, antidiarrhoeal and analgesic properties and in this study we verified its potential to suppress visceral pain, using capsaicin- and cyclophosphamide-induced models of visceral nociception. Mice that received intra-colonic capsaicin (0.3%, 50 microl/animal) or intraperitoneal injection of cyclophosphamide (400 mg/kg) manifested spontaneous nociceptive beh

Antiulcerogenic mechanisms of dehydrocrotonin, a diterpene lactone obtained from Croton cajucara.

The bark of Croton cajucara Benth, is used in Brazilian folk medicine as an infusion to treat gastrointestinal disorders. The aim of the present study was to assess the mechanisms involved in the antiulcerogenic activity of dehydrocrotonin (DHC), a diterpene isolated from C. cajucara bark. We studied the effects of DHC on pylorus ligature (Shay) in mice treated with the drug (100 mg/kg) by the intraduodenal route. DHC did not induce any alteration in gastric volume in Shay mice but modified the pH and total acid concentration of gastric juice. Incubation of gastric juice with DHC did not reduc

Staphylococcus aureus infection on experimental croton oil-inflamed skin in mice.

Staphylococcus aureus cells were inoculated on the surface of skin inflamed by application of croton oil in cyclophosphamide-treated mice. Skin specimens were taken at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 h inoculation and each specimen was examined by microscopy. The S. aureus cells which attached to the surface of the skin immediately after inoculation had invaded the horny layer within 1 h. The cells gradually penetrated deeper into the epidermis. Electron microscopy revealed fibril-like structures around the S. aureus cells and the cells which adhered to the horny layer and fibrin by means of Ruthenium red

Highly oxygenated clerodane furanoditerpenoids from the leaves and twigs of Croton yunnanensis.

The phytochemical investigation of the leaves and twigs of Croton yunnanensis resulted in the isolation of eight new clerodane furanoditerpenoids, named croyunfuranoids A-H (1-8), along with three known analogs (9-11). The structures of these compounds were elucidated using spectroscopic analyses, and their absolute configurations were determined through a combination of electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Notably, Croyunfuranoid D (4) is identified as a rare 18,19-dinor-clerodane diterpenoid. Additionally, the structure of a previously report

Vasorelaxant activity of essential oils from Croton zambesicus and some of their constituents.

In this study, we determined the vasorelaxant activity of essential oils of different samples of CROTON ZAMBESICUS collected in the same area in Benin at different periods and analysed their compositions by GC-FID and GC-MS. 68 compounds were identified among which 20 have not been described previously in this plant's essential oils. We observed quantitative differences among essential oils but all possess significant vasorelaxant activity on intact rat aortae contracted by KCl (IC (50) 5.6-11.8 µg/mL). This activity may, at least in part, be explained by the presence of vasorelaxant diterpene
