Mental Health and Mobile Communication Profiles of Crowdsourced Participants.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) are highly prevalent and burdensome. To increase mental health screening rates, the digital health research community has been exploring the ability to augment self reporting instruments with digital logs. Crowdsourced workers are being increasingly recruited for behavioral health research studies as demographically representative samples are desired for later translational applications. Overshadowed by predictive modeling, descriptive modeling has the ability to expand knowledge and understanding of the clinical generaliza

A Perspective on Crowdsourcing and Human-in-the-Loop Workflows in Precision Health.

Modern machine learning approaches have led to performant diagnostic models for a variety of health conditions. Several machine learning approaches, such as decision trees and deep neural networks, can, in principle, approximate any function. However, this power can be considered to be both a gift and a curse, as the propensity toward overfitting is magnified when the input data are heterogeneous and high dimensional and the output class is highly nonlinear. This issue can especially plague diagnostic systems that predict behavioral and psychiatric conditions that are diagnosed with subjective

Photobiomodulation and alopecia: a crowdsourced survey study on patient preferences.

Photobiomodulation is a treatment option for hair loss and is currently FDA cleared for androgenetic alopecia. There are a variety of photobiomodulation devices intended for at-home patient use. However, data examining user preferences is lacking. A social media-based, online survey study was completed to understand patient preferences when selecting a photobiomodulation device. Secondary outcomes examined patient experience with the device. Sixty participants responded to the 21-question survey. The majority of participants had never used a photobiomodulation device (n = 50; 86.2%). Most resp

Defining Aesthetic Preferences for the Penis: A Photogrammetric and Crowdsourcing Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Achieving an aesthetic phalloplasty result is important for patients with acquired or congenital defects of the penis, or with genital-related dysphoria. However, aside from length and girth, the aesthetic proportions of the male penis have not been defined. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine proportions of the male penis through photogrammetric analysis of nude male photographs and to verify these proportions with a crowdsourcing-based survey. METHODS: Nude male photographs (n = 283) were analyzed to define aesthetic proportions of the male penis. Photographs were analyze

Evaluating crowdsourcing for ICU EEG annotation: A comparison with expert performance.

OBJECTIVE: Detection of seizures and rhythmic or periodic patterns (SRPPs) on electroencephalography (EEG) is crucial for the diagnosis and management of patients with neurological critical illness. Although automated detection methods are advancing, they require large, high-quality, expert-annotated datasets for training. However, expert annotation is limited by the availability of trained neurophysiologists. Crowdsourcing, or soliciting contributions from a large group of people, may present a potential solution. This study evaluates the feasibility of crowdsourcing annotations of short epoc

Evaluation of corrosion control products on a distribution system through crowdsourcing.

Crowdsourcing of citizens was used to determine the effectiveness of corrosion control in a water distribution system. This study examines the frequency and severity of "Red Water" complaints over a period of 4 years, and two different corrosion control chemicals, polyphosphate and zinc orthophosphate. The data revealed that the frequency of Red Water complaints was higher when using zinc orthophosphate while the severity (higher iron) was higher when using polyphosphates. Varying the dose of zinc orthophosphate to account for cold months induced a greater number of customer complaints. Moreov

Transforming assessment of speech in children with cleft palate via online crowdsourcing.

OBJECTIVE: Speech intelligibility is fundamental to social interactions and a critical surgical outcome in patients with cleft palate. Online crowdsourcing is a burgeoning technology, with potential to mitigate the burden of limited accessibility to speech-language-pathologists (SLPs). This pilot study investigates the concordance of online crowdsourced evaluations of hypernasality with SLP ratings of children with cleft palate. METHODS: Six audio-phrases each from children with cleft palate were assessed by online crowdsourcing using Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk), and compared to SLP's gold

Crowdsourcing Trauma: Psychopathology in a Trauma-Exposed Sample Recruited via Mechanical Turk.

Although crowdsourcing websites like Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTurk) allow researchers to conduct research efficiently, it is unclear if MTurk and traditionally recruited samples are comparable when assessing the sequela of traumatic events. We compared the responses to validated self-report measures of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related constructs that were given by 822 participants recruited via MTurk and had experienced a DSM-5 Criterion A traumatic event to responses obtained in recent samples of participants recruited via traditional methods. Results suggested that the rate

Defining Preferred Esthetics of the Ideal Phallus via Crowdsource Survey.

OBJECTIVE: To describe phalloplasty subunits and determine the preferred crowdsourced esthetics. Esthetic ideals are often used to guide reconstruction, and there has been an increase in the number of gender-affirming surgeries and reconstructive phalloplasties performed. However, there is a paucity of literature describing ideal phalloplasty esthetics. METHODS: Phallus esthetic subunits were defined, and a split testing-based survey was used. Subjects were solicited via Craigslist, Amazon Mechanical Turk, and Reddit and distributed among health care co-workers. Computer-generated images with

Improving Crowdsourcing-Based Image Classification Through Expanded Input Elicitation and Machine Learning.

This work investigates how different forms of input elicitation obtained from crowdsourcing can be utilized to improve the quality of inferred labels for image classification tasks, where an image must be labeled as either positive or negative depending on the presence/absence of a specified object. Five types of input elicitation methods are tested: binary classification (positive or negative); the (x, y)-coordinate of the position participants believe a target object is located; level of confidence in binary response (on a scale from 0 to 100%); what participants believe the majority of the

Crowdsourcing assessment of maternal blood multi-omics for predicting gestational age and preterm birth.

Identification of pregnancies at risk of preterm birth (PTB), the leading cause of newborn deaths, remains challenging given the syndromic nature of the disease. We report a longitudinal multi-omics study coupled with a DREAM challenge to develop predictive models of PTB. The findings indicate that whole-blood gene expression predicts ultrasound-based gestational ages in normal and complicated pregnancies (r = 0.83) and, using data collected before 37 weeks of gestation, also predicts the delivery date in both normal pregnancies (r = 0.86) and those with spontaneous preterm birth (r = 0.75).
