The significance of crown-rump length measurement for predicting adverse pregnancy outcome of threatened abortion.

OBJECTIVES: To determine if in women with threatened miscarriage the measurement of fetal crown-rump length (CRL) is a useful predictor of spontaneous miscarriage and small for gestational age (SGA) infants. METHODS: Fetal CRL was measured in 310 singleton pregnancies with live fetuses, presenting with threatened miscarriage before 13 weeks of gestation. The relationship between fetal CRL and pregnancy outcome was investigated. RESULTS: In fetuses with CRL < 18 mm there was a significant positive association between the deficit in CRL for gestation and the incidence of subsequent spontaneous

Crown-rump length discordance in the first trimester: a predictor of adverse outcome in twin pregnancies?

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the usefulness of first-trimester crown-rump length (CRL) discordance in predicting adverse outcome in twin pregnancies. METHODS: This retrospective study included a large cohort retrieved from local ultrasound databases at 14 obstetric departments in Denmark, comprising all twin pregnancies with two live fetuses scanned between 11 and 14 weeks' gestation during the period 1 January 2004 to 31 December 2006. The association between CRL discordance ≥ 10 % and adverse outcome was evaluated. RESULTS: Among 1993 twin pregnancies, 1733 were dichorionic (156 (9%) discordant

Crown-rump length discordance in twins in the first trimester and its correlation with perinatal complications.

BACKGROUND: A difference more than 15-40% in birth weight of twins can predict perinatal complications. As significant difference in twins growth has a very important effect on pregnancy and perinatal complications, this study aimed to evaluate crown-rump length discordance (ΔCRL) in the first trimester of pregnancy and its correlation with perinatal complications. METHODS: A total number of 118 women in the first trimester of twin pregnancy underwent ultrasound examination to measure ΔCRL. Then, at the time of delivery, perinatal complications in twins were recorded and the correlation betwe

Is there a correlation between aberrant embryonic crown-rump length growth velocities and subsequent birth weights?

In this study, we tested the hypothesis that anomalous first trimester growth affects birth weight. Four hundred and fifteen women with viable singleton pregnancies at the primary transvaginal scan who had at least two crown rump length (CRL) and birth weight data were included. A linear mixed model was fitted to the Box-Cox transformed CRL values to evaluate the association between the GA and the embryonic growth. For multivariate analysis we included maternal age, height, weight, parity, number of miscarriages, vaginal bleeding, smoking, foetal gender, birth weight, small-for-gestation (SGA)

Incidence and significance of unequal gestational sac diameter or embryo crown-rump length in twin pregnancy.

The incidence of differences in gestational sac diameter and crown-rump length, measured at the time of the first ultrasound, in which at least one gestational sac or crown-rump length could be visualized, were analysed retrospectively in 260 twin pregnancies in which one or both fetuses were delivered at term. The difference in gestational sac diameter averaged 1.2 +/- 0.1 mm for pregnancies which ended in twin births, compared to 2.0 +/- 0.3 mm when pregnancy ended in single births (P less than 0.02). The difference in crown-rump length averaged 2.4 +/- 0.6 mm for pregnancies which ended in

First-Trimester Crown-Rump Length and Risk of Chromosomal Aberrations-A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Lower than expected first-trimester crown-rump length (CRL) is a common sonographic finding, usually leading to reassessment of gestational age. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to perform a meta-analysis defining the risk of chromosomal aberrations in pregnancies with decreased first-trimester CRL. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A search was conducted by a research librarian in 5 databases, with no time or language restrictions. Original researches examining the risk of chromosomal aberrations in pregnancies with low CRL were selected. The effect estimates were presented as odds rati

The impact of crown-rump length measurement error on combined Down syndrome screening: a simulation study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of a 5-mm error in the measurement of crown-rump length (CRL) in a woman undergoing ultrasound and biochemistry sequential combined screening for Down syndrome. METHODS: Based on existing risk calculation algorithms, we simulated the case of a 35-year-old-woman undergoing combined screening based on nuchal translucency (NT) measurement and early second-trimester maternal serum markers (human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) expressed as multiples of the median (MoM)). Two measurement errors were considered (+ or - 5 mm), for four diffe

Correlation of head circumference and crown-rump length in newborn infants. A potential indicator of congenital maldevelopment.

A study of 305 consecutive neonatal autopsies done by two prosectors showed a high correlation between the head circumference (HC) and crown-rump length (CR). The calculated formula can be stated approximately as HC equals 0.9 CR + 2.5 cm, and the two measurements are for all practical purposes equal in the immediate neonatal period, regardless of race, sex, age and body weight. When the HC was found to be significantly larger than CR, hydrocephalus and certain types of chondrodystrophy were present. When the HC was significantly smaller than CR, there was a higher incidence of congenital hear

Sonar measurement of fetal crown-rump length as means of assessing maturity in first trimester of pregnancy.

A method is reported by which the "in utero" crown-rump length of the fetus may be determined by sonar in the first trimester of pregnancy. The accuracy of the technique was assessed by comparing the sonar and the direct postabortum measurements of fetuses in cases of missed abortion. A normal curve of fetal crown-rump length was derived from 214 examinations on 80 patients and by using these values in a further "blind" series it was found possible to predict the maturity of pregnancy to within three days, between the sixth and the 14th weeks of pregnancy.

Maternal obesity is not associated with increased crown-rump length in first-trimester ultrasounds of singleton gestations.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether or not obesity affects fetal growth in the first trimester of pregnancy. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study of obese versus non-obese women in our ultrasound database was performed to compare crown-rump length (CRL), a surrogate of fetal growth, at the first-trimester genetic screening. RESULTS: A total of 50 obese and 50 non-obese women were included. CRL for both groups was performed at an average of 12wk5d ± 3 d. A linear regression analysis demonstrated that there was no difference between the cohorts in respect to CRL in the first trimester (p = .4

Repeated Measurement of Crown-Rump Length at 9 and 11-13 Weeks' Gestation: Association with Adverse Pregnancy Outcome.

AIMS: To clarify whether ultrasonographic measurements of crown-rump length (CRL) at 11-13 weeks - based on the number of gestational days determined using the CRL at 9 weeks - can predict fetal prognosis. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted to evaluate the association between fetal growth in the first trimester and fetal prognosis. Fetal growth in the first trimester was evaluated measuring CRLs at 11-13 weeks determined using the CRL at 9 weeks. The subjects were divided into short CRL (s-CRL) and normal CRL (n-CRL). The prognoses were compared between the two groups. RESULTS

Effect of Drakshavaleha in cyclophosphamide induced weight loss and reduction in crown-rump length in developing mice embryo.

Being an anti-mitotic and apoptosis inducing agent, Cyclophosphamide (CP) causes stunting in size and loss of body weight of the pups on intra-peritoneal injection (10 mg/kg) to pregnant mice on day 11 of gestation. Loss of body weight due to CP administration could be minimized by feeding Drakshavaleha (16 g/kg) orally to pregnant mice from day "0" to day "18" of their gestation. Recovery observed in terms of body weight of the pups was statistically significant (P < 0.001) in Drakshavaleha treated pups. Drakshavaleha also recovered the crown-rump length of the pups occurred due to CP adminis
