Comparative ultrastructure of the root system in rhizocephalan barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Rhizocephala).

Rhizocephalan barnacles are parasites of Crustacea. They lack even the rudiments of an alimentary canal, but infiltrate their hosts with a nutrient-absorbing system of rootlets. We review the ultrastructure of the rootlets using light microscopy, SEM, and TEM in nine species from five families, representing both suborders of the Rhizocephala: from the Kentrogonida Peltogaster paguri, P. curvatus, Peltogasterella sulcata, Cyphosaccus norvegicus (Peltogastridae); Lernaeodiscus porcellanae (Lernaeodiscidae); and Sacculina carcini (Sacculinidae); and from the Akentrogonida Clistosaccus paguri (Cli

Modulatory effects of a single neurons on the activity of the pyloric pattern generator in Crustacea.

The firing of a single neuron (named anterior pyloric modulator: APM) of the esophageal ganglion considerably modifies the pyloric rhythm of the rock lobster. These modifications, characterized by a long delay to onset and a long duration, include increased frequency and amplitude of oscillations of the motor neurons, changes in the efficacy of certain synapses within the network, and voltage-dependent modifications of membrane properties of some motor neurons. APM thus seems to be a true modulatory neuron. The APM-provoked changes resemble changes seen in the whole animal, making this a suita

Caprellidae (Crustacea: Amphipoda) of Aotearoa New Zealand waters: a constantly changing landscape.

A snapshot of the changing landscape of the Aotearoa New Zealand caprellid fauna is presented. This study is primarily an examination of historic material, mainly from the NIWA Invertebrate Collection. The caprellid fauna from this region suffers from similar problems to many amphipod groups recorded in the Southern Hemisphere. These problems primarily have arisen from Northern Hemisphere researchers (during the years 1760-1920), examining the fauna, and after seeing similarities to known, familiar fauna, assume they are the same organism, creating a concept of 'cosmopolitan' species. The faun

Three new species of Paratanaoidea (Crustacea, Tanaidacea) from the South China Sea.

Three new crustacean species of the order Tanaidacea are described from the South China Sea. Alloleptochelia falciformes sp. nov. (Family Leptocheliidae) can be distinguished from the most similar species, A. evansi (Edgar, 2012), by the much stouter body, and fewer articles on the antennule flagellum and relatively longer pereopods 46 dactylus of the male. Kalloleptochelia multiarticulata sp. nov. (Family Leptocheliidae) can be easily differentiated from its congeners by the male having significantly more antennule flagellum articles, a two-articled uropod exopod, one additional dorsal seta o

Osmotic and ionic regulation in several Western atlantic callianassidae (crustacea, decapoda, thalassinidea).

Osmotic and ionic regulatory capacities of callianassid mud shrimps, Callianassa jamaicense, C. major, and C. islagrande, are correlated to their distributions on the Louisiana coast. Callianassa jamaicense burrows in muddy estuaries where salinity may commonly fall to < 5 per thousand, but C. major and C. islagrande usually burrow in sandy beaches bathed by higher salinities. Lower lethal limits of salinity are < 2 per thousand for C. jamaicense, 7-8 per thousand for C. major and probably just below 15 per thousand for adult C. islagrande. After exposure to low salinity C. jamaicense exhibits

In silico characterization of the peptidome of the sea louse Caligus rogercresseyi (Crustacea, Copepoda).

Copepods of the order Siphonostomatoida are a major concern for commercial aquaculture as many farmed fish serve as hosts for these parasitic crustaceans. Caligus rogercresseyi, a member of the Siphonostomatoida, is a significant problem for salmonid aquaculture in the Southern Hemisphere, and as such, a search for methods for controlling infestations of it is ongoing. One possibility for biological control of this and other copepod ectoparasites is endocrine manipulation. However, little is known about the native endocrine signaling systems in these animals. As part of an ongoing effort to ch

Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in the cyprid of Amphibalanus amphitrite (Cirripedia, Crustacea).

The Amphibalanus amphitrite barnacle is a sessile marine crustacean and a major constituent of benthic as well as intertidal communities. A. amphitrite is also an important component of biofouling on artificial substrates. The role of nitric oxide (NO) was recently observed in the settlement of this species. In this work, we used immunohistochemical and histoenzymatic methods to investigate, for the first time, the presence and distribution of NO synthetic enzymes (NOS) in the competent-for-settlement cyprid of A. amphitrite. NOS-like immunoreactivity was observed in various regions of the cyp

Growth and development of Argulus coregoni (Crustacea: Branchiura) on salmonid and cyprinid hosts.

The obligate fish ectoparasite Argulus coregoni is strictly specific to salmonids and is very rarely found on other fish species. The ability of the parasite to grow and complete its life cycle on a cyprinid host, Rutilus rutilus, was compared with that on a typical salmonid host, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Rearing experiments were run for 42 d with newly hatched metanauplii in flow-through tanks. Body length and sex of the parasites were recorded every 5 d. Growth rates on O. mykiss exceeded those on R. rutilus from the age of 2 wk, at which time the parasites reached a length of about 3.5 mm. Male

Toxicity to crustacea due to polypeptide-phospholipase interaction in the venom of a chactoid scorpion.

The toxic factors to isopods (crustacea) were isolated from the venom of the chactoid scorpion Scorpio maurus palmatus (Scorpionidae) by the aid of column chromatography, and their purity was assessed by disc electrophoresis, analytical ultracentrifugation, isoelectrofocusing, and amino acid analysis. The toxicity to isopods is attributed to two groups of components: (a) Low-molecular-weight basic polypeptides possessing about 3 and 8% of the crude venom lethality and paralytic potency to isopods, respectively. These components are characterized by very similar and unique amino acid compositio

Effect of Lernaea cyprinacea (Crustacea: Copepoda) on stocked rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Prevalence, intensity and pathogenesis of Lernaea cyprinacea (anchorworm) in stocked rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fingerlings were monitored annually for 4 yr (1981 to 1984) in East Canyon Reservoir, Utah (USA). Anchorworms were first detected in midsummer each year and were most abundant in the fall. The mean parasite intensity was highest in October 1982 (19 anchorworms per fish); in other years, maximum density was 7 to 9. The dorsal and caudal areas of the fish were the most heavily parasitized. The histological response to parasite attachment included an infectious granuloma simila

Nitric oxide augments voltage-activated calcium currents of crustacea (Idotea baltica) skeletal muscle.

Invertebrate skeletal muscle contraction is regulated by calcium influx through voltage-dependent calcium channels in the sarcolemmal membrane. In present study we investigated the effects of nitric oxide (NO) donors on calcium currents of single skeletal muscle fibres from the marine isopod, Idotea baltica, using two-electrode voltage clamp recording techniques. The NO donors, S-nitrosocysteine, S-nitroso-N-acetyl-penicillamine or hydroxylamine reversibly increased calcium inward currents in a time dependent manner. The increase of the current was prevented by methylene blue. Our experiments

Redescription of the type species of the genus Cypretta (Ostracoda, Crustacea), with notes on the taxonomy of the genus.

With 53 formally described species, the genus Cypretta is one of the most common freshwater ostracod genera in the world. It has a mainly circumtropical distribution. The type species, Cypretta tenuicauda (Vávra, 1895), was described from Zanzibar (Africa) in a superficial way. Therefore, the morphology and identity of this species and of the genus remained problematic until today. Here, we redescribe Cypretta tenuicauda from the original type material and discuss the morphology of the species and the diagnosis of the genus. The species is characterized by the presence of anterior marginal sep

Toxicity and Risk Assessment of Zinc and Aluminum Mixtures to Ceriodaphnia silvestrii (Crustacea: Cladocera).

Despite the co-occurrence of metals in aquatic environments, their joint effects are generally not considered during risk assessments. Data on the combined effects of zinc (Zn) and aluminum (Al) on aquatic animals are extremely scarce in the literature, although these metals are commonly used in domestic and industrial activities. In the present study, we investigated the effects of mixtures of Zn and Al on the cladoceran Ceriodaphnia silvestrii. We evaluated immobility (at 48 h) and ingestion rates (at 24 h). We also performed chronic toxicity tests for single metals. The environmental risks
