Veterinary parasitology, regional studies and reports2022eng
Ctenocephalides felis is the most common hematophagous ectoparasite of domestic cats and dogs worldwide, causing allergic dermatitis, anemia, itching, discomfort, and it is responsible for the transmission of many pathogens. In cattle, parasitism is not common but occurs due to the high adaptability of this flea species. This study aimed to report infestation of a Nellore (Bos indicus) calf from Northern Brazil by C. felis and its clinical findings. A 45 kg male calf presented diarrhea, progressive emaciation after 50 days of birth, and flea infestation. Anemia was observed (4.11 × 106/μL of e

Rickettsia species are obligate intracellular bacteria with both conserved and lineage-specific strategies for invading and surviving within eukaryotic cells. One variable component of Rickettsia biology involves arthropod vectors: for instance, typhus group rickettsiae are principally vectored by insects (i.e., lice and fleas), whereas spotted fever group rickettsiae are exclusively vectored by ticks. For flea-borne Rickettsia typhi, the etiological agent of murine typhus, research on vertebrate host biology is facilitated using cell lines and animal models. However, due to the lack of any st

Fleas are commonly recorded on stray as well as domestic dogs and cats in Hong Kong. Fleas can be a major cause of pruritus in dogs and cats and also vectors of potentially zoonotic bacteria in the genera Rickettsia and Bartonella. Morphological examination of 174 fleas from dogs and cats living in Hong Kong revealed only cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis). Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (cox1) genotyping of 20 randomly selected specimens, revealed three cox1 haplotypes (HK-h1 to HK-h3). The most common haplotype was HK-h1 with 17 specimens (17/20, 85%). HK-h1 was identical to cox1 sequenc

A study design was created to assess the potential for fleas to infest cats directly from other cats. In the first experiment, six cats were infested with 100 fleas each and then immediately put in contact with six flea-free cats for 24 h. After removal of all fleas the study was repeated and the contact between cats lasted 48 h. The total numbers of fleas recovered out of the 600 fleas deposited on the 6 donor cats after each infestation were 499 and 486 at 24 h and 48 h respectively. At 1 h post-contact, five fleas were found on the receiver cats, with three cats having one flea and one cat,

Los Angeles and Orange Counties are known endemic areas for murine typhus in California; however, no recent reports of flea-borne rickettsioses are known from adjacent San Bernardino County. Sixty-five opossums (Didelphis virginiana) were trapped in the suburban residential and industrial zones of the southwestern part of San Bernardino County in 2007. Sixty out of 65 opossums were infested with fleas, primarily cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché, 1835). The flea minimum infection rate with Rickettsia felis was 13.3% in pooled samples and the prevalence was 23.7% in single fleas, with tw

Arginine kinase (ATP:l-arginine omega-N-phosphotransferase, EC2.7.3.3.; AK) is an enzyme crucial for the energy metabolism of insects and other invertebrates, that has known allergenic potential in humans and that has been proposed as a pesticidal drug target. Here we report the identification, cDNA cloning, genomic gene structure and functional expression of AK genes from Ctenocephalides (C.) felis (cat flea). In contrast to other insect species investigated so far, C. felis possesses two AK genes, cfak1 and cfak2, encoding the functional enzymes CfAK1 and CfAK2 that can be distinguished by t

The degradation of cat immunoglobulin G (IgG) in blood-fed adult C. felis midguts was examined. SDS-PAGE analysis of dissected midgut extracts obtained from C. felis that had been blood fed for various times between 0 to 44 h revealed that by 24 h most of the high molecular weight proteins, including the heavy chain of IgG, were digested. A 31-kDa serine protease with IgG degrading activity was purified from fed C. felis midguts by benzamidine affinity chromatography, hydrophobic interaction chromatography, and cation exchange chromatography. Three primary cleavage products between 30- and 40-

Fleas are holometabolous, blood-feeding ectoparasites capable of transmitting diverse pathogens of significant veterinary and public health concerns. Their occurrence and abundance within a given habitat depend on environmental factors and the availability of suitable hosts. In Pakistan, research on flea fauna and their associated pathogens has been neglected. To date, no reports have documented the molecular characterization of Ctenocephalides felis felis and their associated bacteria in Pakistan. In the present study, three hundred and eighty morphologically identified C. felis felis specime

BACKGROUND: Flea infestations remain a major issue in veterinary medicine. Highly effective flea control for dogs and cats remains the foundation for eliminating infestations from homes and improving skin conditions associated with flea-feeding.
METHODS: Homes with pet cats were screened by flea-history questionnaire. Qualifying homes were subselected into "high" (≥ 5 fleas on ≥ 1 cat, and ≥ 5 fleas collected in environmental flea traps over a 16-24 h period), "low" (< 5 fleas on all cats, < 5 in traps), and "no" homes (no evidence of fleas on cats or traps). All cats and dogs in a household

BACKGROUND: The cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is the primary arthropod vector responsible for the transmission of Bartonella henselae, the etiologic agent of cat scratch disease. Although domestic cats serve as the principal reservoir host, maintaining long-term intraerythrocytic bacteremia, the spread of B. henselae within feline populations relies entirely on flea-mediated acquisition and transmission. Early work demonstrated that fleas readily acquire the bacterium while feeding on bacteremic cats and can subsequently infect naïve hosts; however, the underlying biological mechanisms rema

Comparisons were conducted of flea catches of four commercially available flea traps in the laboratory and under field conditions, in both rural and urban locations. The results clearly showed the My Flea Trap™, which utilizes an intermittent light to attract fleas, to be far superior in trapping ability to the three continuous light traps; it caught up to 23 times as many fleas as the other traps. Altering the lighting mechanism to provide continuous rather than intermittent light significantly decreased the number of fleas captured. In addition, the use of a green filter significantly increa

To investigate larval development of Acanthocheilonema reconditum in the cat flea Ctenocephalides felis, fleas were fed through an artificial feeding system with dog blood containing different concentrations of microfilariae (i.e. low, group L = 250; medium, group M = 500; high, group H = 1500 microfilariae per mL) or no microfilariae (group C). Fleas were sampled at 12 different time-points throughout the study period (D1-D28) and A. reconditum was detected by dissection, PCR and histology. Of 2105 fleas fed with infected dog blood, 891 (38·7%) died during the study before being sampled whils

Cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) are the most prevalent ectoparasites of pet animals with cosmopolitan distribution, obligatory hematophagous, and may prey on humans to receive bloodmeals. We studied the microbiota of 100 flea-pools, containing C. felis, and collected from equal number of cats and dogs in the region of Attica, Greece, including Athens. The 16S metagenomics technique detected Brucella spp. nucleotide sequence that was identified as Brucella melitensis DNA by a real-time PCR, in five flea-pools, corresponding to five cats, one owned and the remaining four stray, residing in sem

The effect of Bartonella henselae on the microbiome of its vector, Ctenocephalides felis (the cat flea) is largely unknown, as the majority of C. felis microbiome studies have utilized wild-caught pooled fleas. We surveyed the microbiome of laboratory-origin C. felis fed on B. henselae-infected cats for 24 h or 9 days to identify changes to microbiome diversity and microbe prevalence compared to unfed fleas, and fleas fed on uninfected cats. Utilizing Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) on the Illumina platform, we documented an increase in microbial diversity in C. felis fed on Bartonella-infect

When adult cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché), were fed concentrations of < or = 0.08 ppm lufenuron in cattle blood, egg hatch did not differ significantly from the controls. However, as the concentration of lufenuron in blood increased from 0.125 to 1.0 ppm egg hatch decreased to 64 and 2%, respectively. Most of these eggs contained fully developed larvae. Microscopic examination of unhatched larvae, revealed that the cuticle epidermal cells, chorion, and vitelline membrane all were affected by lufenuron treatment. Larvae often produced 2 separate cuticles in response to treatment. The

BACKGROUND: Ctenocephalides felis is a common ectoparasite of dogs and cats and can transmit a variety of pathogens including Bartonella and Rickettsia species. These bacteria, along with the known endosymbiont Wolbachia, are well-documented members of the C. felis microbiome, but species-level information is limited. Additionally, little is known about the variation in the C. felis microbiome in fleas from different sources and when different sequencing methods are applied to the same samples.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize the flea microbiome using both short-read (V3/V4) and l

BACKGROUND: The cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis, is prevalent worldwide, will parasitize animal reservoirs of plague, and is associated with human habitations in known plague foci. Despite its pervasiveness, limited information is available about the cat flea's competence as a vector for Yersinia pestis. It is generally considered to be a poor vector, based on studies examining early-phase transmission during the first week after infection, but transmission potential by the biofilm-dependent proventricular-blocking mechanism has never been systematically evaluated. In this study, we assessed t

Effective control of the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) infestation is essential for human and animal health. To date, several ectoparasitic drugs, such as carbamates, neonicotinoids, phenylpyrazoles, and pyrethroids have been used to control flea infestations; however their widespread use has led to resistance, hampering treatment success. In this study, the resistance potential of C. felis collected from cats to fipronil (FIP), imidacloprid (IMI), flumethrin (FLU), and propoxur (PRO), which are the commonly used compounds for flea control, was investigated by molecular analyses. Bioassays
