Impact of a snail pellet on the phytoavailability of different metals to cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L.).

FePO4 based molluscicides (snail pellets) also contain a chelating agent. The influence of the chelating agent, which is intrinsically present in the molluscicide, on the phytoavailability of other metals present in the growth medium was investigated in the present study. Cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus) were grown in a hydroponic nutrient solution and exposed for one week to different metals in combination with a chelating agent containing molluscicide. Oven dried roots and shoots of plants were HNO 3/H2O2 microwave digested and analysed regarding total Fe, stable isotopic (54)Fe, Cd, Pb, an

Fine mapping of a novel QTL CsFSG1 for fruit skin gloss in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.).

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is an important vegetable crop that is popular with many people. Peel gloss is a highly valued external quality trait that affects the market value of cucumbers, and it directly influences the purchasing psychology of consumers. Nonetheless, the candidate genes and underlying genetic mechanism for this important cucumber trait are not well understood. In this study, we successfully mapped a fruit skin gloss QTL interval to chromosome 3 (26.04-26.14 Mb) using BSA and GWAS methods. Among the eleven candidate genes in the interval, the cytochrome P450 family gene CsC

Effects of acetylsalicylic acid on germination, growth and chlorophyll amounts of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) seeds.

Germination activities, various growth parameters (primary root length, hypocotyl length, primary leaf length, plant length and increase in fresh weight) and chlorophyll (a+b) amounts of cucumber seeds exposed to 0, 10(-5), 10(-4), 10(-3) and 0.5x 10(-2) M aqueous solutions of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) for 48 h were established. While 0.5x 10(-2) M ASA significantly prevented germination activity of the seeds, other concentrations did not produce any effect, either positive or negative. Meanwhile, 0.5x 10(-2) M ASA inhibited radicle growth of the germinated seeds, while 10(-5) M ASA increased

Genome-Wide Association Studies Reveal Candidate Genes Related to Stem Diameter in Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.).

The stem diameter, an important agronomic trait, affects cucumber growth and yield. However, no genes responsible for cucumber stem diameter have been identified yet. In this study, the stem diameter of 88 cucumber core germplasms were measured in spring 2020, autumn 2020 and autumn 2021, and a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was carried out based on the gene sequence and stem diameter of core germplasms. A total of eight loci (gSD1.1, gSD2.1, gSD3.1, gSD3.2, gSD4.1, gSD5.1, gSD5.2, and gSD6.1) significantly associated with cucumber stem diameter were detected. Of these, five loci (gSD1.1

Hydrogen sulfide negatively regulates cd-induced cell death in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L) root tip cells.

BACKGROUND: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gas signal molecule involved in regulating plants tolerance to heavy metals stress. In this study, we investigated the role of H2S in cadmium-(Cd-) induced cell death of root tips of cucumber seedlings. RESULTS: The results showed that the application of 200 μM Cd caused cell death, increased the content of reactive oxygen species (ROS), chromatin condensation, the release of Cytochrome c (Cyt c) from mitochondria and activated caspase-3-like protease. Pretreatment of seedlings with 100 μM sodium hydrogen sulfide (NaHS, a H2S donor) effectively alleviat

Persistence of ethion residues on cucumber, Cucumis sativus (Linn.) using gas chromatography with nitrogen phosphorus detector.

Residues of ethion were estimated in cucumber by gas liquid chromatography following three applications of the insecticide at 375 and 750 g a.i ha(-1). The average initial deposits of ethion on cucumber fruits were found to be 2.40 and 4.97 mg kg(-1) at single and double dosages, respectively. Residues of ethion dissipated below the maximum residue limit (MRL) of 0.5 mg kg(-1) in 7 days. Half-life (T1/2) for degradation of ethion on cucumber was observed to be 2.92 days at recommended dosage. A waiting period of 7 days is suggested for safe consumption of cucumber.

Facilitating Seed Iron Uptake through Amine-Epoxide Microgels: A Novel Approach to Enhance Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) Germination.

Enhancing the initial stages of plant growth by using polymeric gels for seed priming presents a significant challenge. This study aimed to investigate a microgel derived from polyetheramine-poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) and a bisepoxide (referred to as micro-PPO) as a promising alternative to optimize the seed germination process. The micro-PPO integrated with an iron micronutrient showed a positive impact on seed germination compared with control (Fe solutions) in which the root length yield improved up to 39%. Therefore, the element map by synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence shows that the F

Cucumis sativus and Cucurbita maxima extract attenuate diabetes-induced hepatic and pancreatic injury in a rat model.

Diabetes is usually associated with oxidative stress that causes hepatic and pancreatic tissue injury. This work was carried out to evaluate the effect of Cucumis sativus and Cucurbita maxima methanol extracts on the streptozotocin-induced diabetic hepatic and pancreatic injury in rats. Diabetes was induced in seven equal groups of rats by a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (40 mg/kg), in addition to the non-diabetic control group. Two diabetic groups were treated with Cucumis sativus methanol extract and two were treated with Cucurbita maxima, each at 200 and 400 mg/kg for 2

Effects of metals on seed germination, root elongation, and coleoptile and hypocotyl growth in Triticum aestivum and Cucumis sativus.

A simple, fast, and easy-to-perform method was carried out for the quantification of the inhibitory effects of metals on wheat and cucumber. The method uses seed germination, root elongation, and hypocotyl and coleoptile growth in these plants as parameters in the presence of varying concentrations of metals. Metals selected for this study were Hg, Cd, Co, Cu, Pb, and Zn. Although effective concentrations of these metals for a certain degree of inhibition were different, both plants had a reduced seed germination rate, root, and hypocotyl or coleoptile length with increasing concentrations. Exogenous CaCl2 enhanced adventitious root formation in Cucumis sativus L. under cadmium stress through protein S-nitrosylation.

Cadmium (Cd) stress severely hinders plant growth and development. Calcium ion (Ca2 +) and nitric oxide (NO) are involved in plant growth processes and stress responses. However, their crosstalk in adventitious rooting under Cd stress remains unclear. In this study, the effect of Ca2+ on enhancing the adventitious root development of cucumber under Cd condition was dose-dependent, with a maximal biological response at 200 μM CaCl2. Moreover, Ca2+ chelator obviously reversed the positive influence of Ca2+ on promoting adventitious rooting under Cd stress, which indicates that Ca2+ is indispensa

Insights into salicylic acid responses in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cotyledons based on a comparative proteomic analysis.

To investigate the response of cucumber seedlings to exogenous salicylic acid (SA) and gain a better understanding of SA action mechanism, we generated a proteomic profile of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cotyledons treated with exogenous SA. Analysis of 1500 protein spots from each gel revealed 63 differentially expressed proteins, 59 of which were identified successfully. Of the identified proteins, 97% matched cucumber proteins using a whole cucumber protein database based on the newly completed genome established by our laboratory. The identified proteins were involved in various cellular

5-Aminolevulinic Acid Induced Photodynamic Damage of the Photosynthetic Electron Transport Chain of Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) Cotyledons.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv Poinsette) plants were sprayed with 20 millimolar 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and then incubated in dark for 14 hours. Upon transfer to sunlight ( approximately 800 watts per square meter) the plants died after 5 hours of exposure due to photosensitization reaction of metalloporphyrins. Due to the photodynamic damage, photosystem II (PSII), photosystem I (PSI), and whole chain reactions were impaired. PSII activity was more susceptible to photodynamic damage than PSI. The variable fluorescence was significantly reduced in ALA-treated plants within 1 hour of expo

Comparison of IAA and amino acid profiles of the selected rootstocks and their accumulation in grafted scion of Cucumis sativus L.

Finding a suitable rootstock for Cucumis sativus L. is an important area of research, as it is aimed at extending the fruiting period and increasing the yield. In such studies, it is important to evaluate various biochemical parameters in addition to morphometric data, such as amino acid and auxin content, which will reflect the effectiveness of the rootstock for scion growth. In this research, we tested 56 genotypes and lines from four species of the Cucurbitaceae family as potential candidates for grafting cucumber rootstock: Cucurbita ficifolia Bouché, Cucurbita moschata L., Cucurbita pepo

Effectiveness of Cucumis sativus extract versus glucosamine-chondroitin in the management of moderate osteoarthritis: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Osteoarthritis (OA) is an age-related disease caused by the wear and tear of the joints. Presently, there is no known cure for OA, but its management involves the use of high doses of pain killers and antiinflammatory agents with different side and dependency effects. Alternative management strategies involve the use of high doses of glucosamine-chondroitin (GC). This study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of Q-Actin™, an aqueous extract of Cucumis sativus (cucumber; CSE) against GC in the management of moderate knee OA. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Overall, 122 patients (56 males a

The sensitivity of photosynthesis to magnesium deficiency differs between rice (Oryza sativa L.) and cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.).

Magnesium is an essential macronutrient for plant photosynthesis, and in response to Mg deficiency, dicots appear more sensitive than monocots. Under Mg deficiency, we investigated the causes of differing photosynthetic sensitivities in a dicot and a monocot species. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) and cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) were grown in hydroponic culture to explore their physiological responses to Mg deficiency stress. Both Mg-deficient rice and cucumber plants exhibited lower biomass, leaf area, Mg concentration, and chlorophyll content (Chl) compared with Mg-sufficient plants. However, a mo

A mutation in CsBRP1, encoding a PHD-type domain-containing protein, causes semi-dwarfism in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.).

A novel semi-dwarf cucumber mutant (sd), identified from an EMS mutagenesis screen, was characterized as being caused by a single-nucleotide mutation in CsBRP1-a gene encoding a PHD-type domain-containing protein-a function in regulating plant architecture that was further verified by VIGS. Plant height is a key agronomic trait influencing biomass and yield in crops. Semi-dwarf varieties can improve planting density and light use efficiency, thereby increasing yield. In this study, we identified a semi-dwarf mutant (sd) from an EMS-mutagenized cucumber population, which displayed compact growt

Deciphering differential mRNA and lncRNA expression profiles in response to PEG simulated drought stress in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.).

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), a vital fruit vegetable of the Cucurbitaceae family, originated in India ∼ 3000 years ago. It is widely used in the culinary, therapeutic, and cosmetic sectors. Cucumber cultivation is significantly impacted by drought stress, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. This study investigates the molecular response to drought using two contrasting cucumber lines: WBC-23-2 (drought-tolerant) and DGPC-59 (drought-sensitive). Drought was simulated using polyethylene glycol (PEG), and effects on physiological and biochemical traits were evaluated. The tolerant line ex
