The ultrastructure of the midgut of fourth instar Ochlerotatus togoi was investigated by light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. This study was performed to provide information to help devise future control efforts aimed at the larval stages of this vector of filariasis. The fourth instar midgut was approximately 2 mm in length and consisted of three morphologically distinct cell types: epithelial, regenerative, and endocrine cells. There was a monolayer of epithelial cells on the luminal surface of the midgut, with multiple folds of the plasma membrane where it adjoined the base

The temperate United States has experienced increasing incidence of mosquito-borne diseases. Recent studies conducted in Baltimore, MD have demonstrated a negative relationship between abundances of Aedes albopictus (Skuse) and Culex mosquitoes and mean neighborhood income level, but have not looked at the presence of pathogens. Mosquitoes collected from five socioeconomically variable neighborhoods were tested for infection by West Nile, chikungunya, and Zika viruses in 2015 and 2016, and again from four of the neighborhoods in 2017. Minimum infection rates of pooled samples were compared amo

Mosquitoes are major carriers of diseases such as dengue, lymphatic filariasis, malaria, chikungunya, and Japanese encephalitis, as they feed on blood and act as ectoparasites. This study focuses on the effectiveness of a plant-derived insecticide, specifically the hexane extract from Sphaeranthus indicus leaves, against Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes. By conducting phytochemical extraction, fractionation, and spectroscopic analysis, ten fractions were isolated. One of these fractions showed significant mosquito-killing activity, with nonacosane identified as the primary a

The evolution of pyrethroid insecticide resistance in Culex tarsalis Coquillett, a vector for West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis viruses, is a growing concern in Northern California. Common mechanisms of resistance include the target-site mutation, kdr, and increased levels of detoxification enzymes, such as mixed-function oxidases, GSTs, and esterases. The goal of this study was to compare the prevalence of kdr mutations (L1014F and L1014S) and detoxification enzymes between pyrethroid susceptible and resistant Cx. tarsalis individuals. Individual mosquitoes, categorized by resistance statu

The juvenile hormone analog S-methoprene is the only synthetic biopesticide that is registered with the United States Environmental Protection Agency to control arthropods of economic importance in public health, livestock, pets, urban, and stored products. The high activity, relative target specificity, and benign environmental profile of S-methoprene have been well documented. While the risk of resistance in mosquitoes to S-methoprene is generally low, there is a lack of information regarding cross resistance in S-methoprene-resistant mosquitoes to other pesticides. In this paper, a populati

The control of mosquitoes by means of chemical insecticides has been a problem, mainly due to the possibility of resistance developed by insects to xenobiotics. For this reason, demand for botanical insecticides has increased. In this sense, the present work aims to verify the susceptibility and morphological and biochemical alterations of Culex quinquefasciatus larvae after exposure to essential oil (EO) of leaves of Baccharis dracunculifolia. To observe the larvicidal action, larvae were exposed to EO at concentrations of 25, 50, 100, and 200 mg/L, until their emergence to adults. The contro

The vertebrate host preferences of Aedes trivittatus mosquitoes were studied to gain an insight into the possible hosts of trivittatus (TVT) virus (California encephalitis group) in Iowa. Engorged mosquitoes were collected with a Malaise trap and Dry Ice-baited CDC miniature light traps. The origin of mosquito blood meals was determined by the capillary tube precipitin test. Of 600 A. trivittatus blood meals tested, 409 (68.2%) reacted positively with anti-rabbit serum. The incidences of mosquitoes feeding on other vertebrate species ranged from 0.2% to 2.5%. The vertebrate host preferences of

BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION: The Republic of Djibouti is located in the Horn of Africa, on the Gulf of Aden and the Bab-el-Mandeb detroit, at the southern entrance to the Red Sea. Prior to its independence in 1977, the Republic of Djibouti was known by two names: "Côte française des Somalis" until 1967, then "Territoire Français de Afars et Issas". As part of our doctoral research on the ecology of mosquitoes in Djibouti, we noted a lack of information on the species encountered, and felt it essential to draw up a list of species before embarking on ecological monitoring. The aim of this work

The yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, is a growing global concern. An ecological parameter necessary for vector control is the dispersal, or flight range, of mosquito vectors. Information on mosquito dispersal supports identifying optimal sampling and control strategies to limit the invasion of adult mosquitoes. Attempts around the world to understand the movement and flight range of Ae. aegypti have used a variety of techniques, but there has been little agreement regarding flight distances of Ae. aegypti, specifically the average linear distance Ae. aegypti travel in their natural enviro

BACKGROUND: Culex nigripalpus has a wide geographical distribution and is found in North and South America. Females are considered primary vectors for several arboviruses, including Saint Louis encephalitis virus, Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus and Eastern equine encephalitis virus, as well as a potential vector of West Nile virus. In view of the epidemiological importance of this mosquito and its high abundance, this study sought to investigate wing variation in Cx. nigripalpus populations from urban parks in the city of São Paulo, Brazil.
METHODS: Female mosquitoes were collected in s

Mosquitoes transmit a variety of pathogens that have devastating consequences for global public and veterinary health. Despite their capacity to serve as vectors, these insects have a robust capacity to respond to invading organisms with strong cellular and humoral immune responses. In Egypt, Aedes caspius (Pallas, 1771) has been suspected to act as a bridge vector of Rift Valley Fever virus between animals and humans. Microscopic analysis of Ae. caspius hemolymph revealed the presence of phagocytic cells called granulocytes. We further evaluated cellular immune responses produced by Ae. caspi

The Anopheles hyrcanus group is widely distributed in the Palearctic and Oriental regions. Among the reported members, 25 species have definitive scientific names. Some are determined as vectors of malaria, lymphatic filariasis, and Japanese encephalitis. However, it is extremely difficult to morphologically discriminate the group members. With the development of techniques like crossing experiment, karyotype analysis, and molecular phylogeny, the classification of the Hyrcanus Group has been changed. In this review we update the list of the Hyrcanus Group, including addition of newly discover

Usutu virus (USUV), a flavivirus belonging to the Japanese encephalitis serocomplex, was isolated for the first time from a Culex neavei mosquito in 1959 in South Africa. Despite multiple isolations of USUV from Cx. neavei in Africa, its vector competence remains unproven. Therefore, we infected Cx. neavei orally with the USUV reference strain and used reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and an indirect immunofluorescence assay to detect virus in bodies, legs, wings, and saliva of mosquitoes. We demonstrated the susceptibility of Cx. neavei mosquitoes for the USUV reference strain,

Biological transmission of arboviruses to a vertebrate host occurs when virions are expelled along with saliva during blood feeding by a hematophagous arthropod. We undertook experiments to determine whether mosquitoes expectorate flaviviruses in their saliva while sugar feeding. Batches of Culex annulirostris Skuse and Culex gelidus Theobald (Diptera: Culicidae) were orally infected with Japanese encephalitis (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, JEV), Kunjin (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, KUNV; a subtype of West Nile virus), and Murray Valley encephalitis (family Flaviviridae, gen

The filarial nematode, Dirofilaria immitis (Leidy) (Spirurida: Onchocercidae), is an obligate mosquito-borne pathogen transmitted by at least 26 species of mosquitoes in the United States. Due to its size and migration through mosquito tissues during its first 3 larval stages (L1-L3), it can damage the mosquito to the point of death, thereby hindering transmission to its vertebrate host (eg canids and other carnivores). Mosquito species vary in competency for D. immitis, where some species facilitate the development of more viable, infectious L3 worms (host tolerance), while others produce few

Mosquito-vectored disease remains a significant global public health threat. One of the most significant barriers to mosquito control is the evolution of insecticide resistance and limited number of available insecticide classes. Isoxazolines and meta-diamides are two classes of insecticides targeting the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) channel, a target site currently under-utilized in mosquito adulticides. Topical assays were conducted on laboratory colonies of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae), and the common malaria mosquito, Anopheles quadrimaculatus Say (Dip

INTRODUCTION: Wireless communication connects billions of people worldwide, relying on radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF). Generally, fifth-generation (5G) networks shift RF carriers to higher frequencies. Although radio, cell phones, and television have benefitted humans for decades, higher carrier frequencies can present potential health risks. Insects closely associated with humans (such as mosquitoes) can undergo increased RF absorption and dielectric heating. This process inadvertently impacts the insects' behaviour, morphology, and physiology, which can influence their spread

The Aedes aegypti mosquito is the primary vector of dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, and Zika viruses. Infection with the dengue virus alone occurs in an estimated 400 million people each year. Likelihood of infection with a virus transmitted by Ae. aegypti is most commonly attributed to abundance of the mosquito. However, the Arizona-Sonora desert region has abundant Ae. aegypti in most urban areas, yet local transmission of these arboviruses has not been reported in many of these cities. Previous work examined the role of differential Ae. aegypti longevity as a potential explanation for th

A southern house mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus Say colony was established from surviving late instars and pupae from a semifield evaluation on Natular XRG (a granular formulation containing 2.5% spinosad). The initial lethal levels ofNatular XRG against this colony were determined in the laboratory for the first-generation progeny (designated as F1). Selection pressure was applied at LC70-90 levels to 10,000-15,000 late third- and early fourth-instar larvae of each generation with Natular XRG. Susceptibility changes in response to selection were determined every other generation, where a gra
