The parietal lobe evolution and the emergence of material culture in the human genus.

Traditional and new disciplines converge in suggesting that the parietal lobe underwent a considerable expansion during human evolution. Through the study of endocasts and shape analysis, paleoneurology has shown an increased globularity of the braincase and bulging of the parietal region in modern humans, as compared to other human species, including Neandertals. Cortical complexity increased in both the superior and inferior parietal lobules. Emerging fields bridging archaeology and neuroscience supply further evidence of the involvement of the parietal cortex in human-specific behaviors rel

Respiratory oscillations and heat evolution in synchronous cultures of Candida utilis.

Synchronous cultures of the budding yeast Candida utilis prepared by continuous-flow size selection showed respiratory oscillations when the energy source was either glucose, acetate or glycerol. The period of the oscillations was about one-third of the cell cycle time (i.e. about 0.5 h). No fluctuations in heat evolution could be detected. In organisms growing with acetate or glycerol, the effects of cyanide, N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodi-imide and carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone (maximum inhibition of respiration at respiratory maxima, maximum uncoupling of energy conservation at respira

The evolution of diagnostic microbiology: integrating culture-based methods and genomic advances.

Over the past several decades, diagnostic microbiology has progressed from traditional culture methods to include modern, culture-independent molecular and metagenomic approaches for diagnosing infectious diseases and guiding antimicrobial therapy. Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, clinical diagnostic microbiology has made considerable strides in optimizing pathogen identification. This progress has been driven by the introduction of optimized sampling methods, advanced diagnostic kits, and new technologies like mass spectrometry for bacterial identification, real-time genomics,

Evolution of cultured leukemic cell lines monitored by chromosomal and immunologic analysis.

We have investigated the karyotypes and markers of B lymphocyte differentiation in two leukemic cell lines, NALM-6-B and NALM-6-MI, both derived from a patient with non-T, non-B acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Both possess characteristics of thymus-independent, bursal-equivalent (B) lymphocytes. By means of immuno-fluorescence techniques, NALM-6-B was shown to possess 47% surface membrane immunoglobulin-positive (Slg+) cells, while NALM-6-MI is surface membrane immunoglobulin-negative (Slg-), but does possess cytoplasmic immunoglobulin M (ClgM+) in more than 90% of the cells. The Slg- ClgM+ phen

The evolution of in vitro culture systems for the study of hepatitis E virus infection.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV), a major cause of acute viral hepatitis worldwide, is increasingly recognized as an important zoonotic pathogen capable of causing chronic infection and diverse extrahepatic manifestations. However, progress in understanding the biology and pathogenesis of HEV has historically been constrained by the limited availability of robust and reproducible in vitro culture systems. Early work relied heavily on hepatoma-derived cell lines, which, while experimentally tractable, often support inefficient viral replication and incompletely reflect hepatic physiology. Recently, subs

The cross-cultural and chronological evolution of the kidney-bone relationship: from ancient medical insights to modern molecular endocrinology.

The kidney-bone axis constitutes a conserved bidirectional endocrine network that orchestrates skeletal remodeling and systemic mineral homeostasis. Its dysregulation underlies chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD), renal osteodystrophy, secondary hyperparathyroidism, and associated vascular calcification, markedly elevating fracture and cardiovascular mortality risks. This review offers a unique cross-cultural and chronological synthesis of the kidney-bone relationship, bridging ancient medical insights with modern molecular endocrinology. Horizontally, we systematically

Evolution of brain and culture: the neurological and cognitive journey from Australopithecus to Albert Einstein.

Fossil and comparative primatological evidence suggest that alterations in the development of prehistoric hominin infants kindled three consecutive evolutionary-developmental (evo-devo) trends that, ultimately, paved the way for the evolution of the human brain and cognition. In the earliest trend, infants' development of posture and locomotion became delayed because of anatomical changes that accompanied the prolonged evolution of bipedalism. Because modern humans have inherited these changes, our babies are much slower than other primates to reach developmental milestones such as standing, c

Human evolution and culture in relationship to shame in the parenting role: Implications for psychology and psychotherapy.

OBJECTIVES: There is considerable evidence that early parenting has profound effects on a range of physiological and psychological maturation processes. Furthermore, psychotherapy often addresses some of the distortions and developmental difficulties that have arisen from early childhood. While research has focused on obvious candidates such as abuse and neglect, this paper reviews some of the core themes related to a less investigated area, specifically parental shame on child development. Role shame sensitive parenting styles will be explored against an evolutionary background that contrasts

Evolution of action potential propagation and repolarization in cultured neonatal rat ventricular myocytes.

INTRODUCTION: Cultured neonatal rat ventricular myocytes (NRVM) reestablish gap junctions as they form synchronously and spontaneously beating monolayers, thus providing a useful model for studying activation and repolarization. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used the multielectrode array data acquisition system with 60 unipolar electrodes to investigate the functional organization of cultured NRVM, by determining propagation and repolarization patterns. Activation maps were constructed from the local activation times at each electrode. During days 3 to 8 in culture, QRS amplitude and dV/dt(max) inc

A lobbying theory of cultural evolution: Rhetoric, expediency, and self-interest promote inequality in the prescriptive grammar of complex institutions.

Anthropologists have noted, time and again, that cultural norms and institutions often (1) are "functional," providing context-relevant benefits, (2) convergently evolve, and (3) benefit certain individuals over others. In this commentary, I consider inequality, self-interest, and coercion in complex cultural institutions. I extend Chater and Christiansen's theory of social tinkering, taking cues from Mercier and Sperber's argumentative theory of human reason and Singh et al.'s self-interested enforcement hypothesis, to argue that humans are well-adapted "cultural lobbyists."

Sequence divergence of measles virus haemagglutinin during natural evolution and adaptation to cell culture.

Phylogenetic analysis of the sequence of the H gene of 75 measles virus (MV) strains (32 published and 43 new sequences) was carried out. The lineage groups described from comparison of the nucleotide sequences encoding the C-terminal regions of the N protein of MV were the same as those derived from the H gene sequences in almost all cases. The databases document a number of distinct genotype switches that have occurred in Madrid (Spain). Well-documented is the complete replacement of lineage group C2, the common European genotype at that time, with that of group D3 around the autumn of 1993.

Evolution of cAMP phosphodiesterase activity in cultured myometrial cells: effects of steroids and of successive subcultures.

Cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase (PDE) activity was characterized in culture of ewe myometrial cells and its sensitivity to steroid hormones was tested. Cultured myometrial cells were maintained from the first to the 20th subculture in the presence of 2% of serum in a medium supplemented with 1 microM of insulin. It was found that myometrial cells possess a PDE activity with atypical kinetics. The nonlinear responses in Lineweaver-Burke plots suggest the presence of high- and low-affinity PDE activities. In cell culture, apparent Km values were similar to those obtained from the original myometriu

The impact of cultural evolution on the ego ideal, depression, psychosis, and suicide: a South India community study of the widow.

Cultural factors have a significant impact on the manifestation of psychiatric illness and the development of the ego ideal. The evolution of the widow's cultural role in a South India village provides insight on the ego ideal through several generations. As treatment of widows changed so that their appearance became indistinguishable from other women, they no longer became objects of revulsion. A case study approach documents the interrelationship of changes in the cultural ego ideal on psychiatric illness among widows in a South India village over a period of more than four decades.

From information free-riding to information sharing: how have humans solved the cooperative dilemma at the heart of cumulative cultural evolution?

Cumulative cultural evolution, where populations accumulate ever-improving knowledge, technologies and social customs, is arguably a unique feature of human sociality and responsible for our species' ecological dominance of the planet. However, at the heart of cumulative cultural evolution is a cooperative dilemma. Assuming asocial learning is more costly than social learning, social learners can act as 'information free-riders' by copying innovations from asocial learners without paying the cost. This cost asymmetry will reduce innovation, inhibiting cumulative culture. Innovators might respo

The evolution of the socio-cultural and religious characteristics of cancer patients in Morocco: case of the National Institute of Oncology Rabat.

BACKGROUND: In 2020, Morocco recorded more than 59,370 new cases of cancer and more than 35,265 cases of death (International Agency for Research on Cancer, Annual report Morocco, 2020). Cancer is always accompanied by socially constructed, differentiated, and contingent interpretations and practices according to the socio-cultural and religious characteristics of each region. The study aims at describing the evolution of the socio-cultural and religious aspects of Moroccan cancer patients followed at the National Institute of Oncology (NIO) of Rabat between 2010 and 2020. METHODS: We have pr

The Evolution of the Optimization of Cognitive and Social Functions in the Cerebellum and Thereby the Rise of Homo sapiens Through Cumulative Culture.

The evolution of the prominent role of the cerebellum in the development of composite tools, and cumulative culture, leading to the rise of Homo sapiens is examined. Following Stout and Hecht's (2017) detailed description of stone-tool making, eight key repetitive involvements of the cerebellum are highlighted. These key cerebellar learning involvements include the following: (1) optimization of cognitive-social control, (2) prediction (3) focus of attention, (4) automaticity of smoothness, appropriateness, and speed of movement and cognition, (5) refined movement and social cognition, (6) lea
