"We are only looking at the tip of the iceberg in infertility": perspectives of health providers about fertility issues and management among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

INTRODUCTION: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and men are disproportionately affected by a range of risk factors for infertility. However, remarkably little is known about the prevalence of infertility in this group, or how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people access fertility treatments including assisted reproductive technology (ART). This qualitative study aims to explore health care provider (HCP) perspectives on the health burden of infertility among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, as well as factors that may affect access to infertility treatment for thi

A Critical Literature Review of Health Inequalities, Cultural Exclusion, and the Case for a Culturally Appropriate Digital Health Promotion App for Black Communities in England.

BACKGROUND: Black communities in England experience health inequalities rooted in structural racism, socioeconomic deprivation, and systemic exclusion from health systems that fail to address their specific needs. Digital health technologies offer potential for reducing these disparities, yet the existing evidence reveals an absence of culturally appropriate digital interventions designed with and for Black communities in England. OBJECTIVE: To synthesise evidence on the structural and cultural determinants of health inequality affecting Black people in England and examine the potential of he

Establishing a transport protocol for the delivery of melanocytes and keratinocytes for the treatment of vitiligo.

We have previously developed a cell delivery and transfer technology for delivering autologous keratinocytes and melanocytes to patients with vitiligo. However, for this technology to benefit many patients geographically distant from the cell culture facility transportation issues need to be overcome. In this study we begin to investigate this by looking at what role surface chemistry and medium supplements, including fetal calf serum, CO₂ gassing, and temperature, play in influencing cell viability. Cells were maintained on carriers for up to 48 h outside of a CO₂ incubator at 37 °C and their

Development of fundamental technologies for micro bioreactors.

This chapter reviews the development of fundamental technologies required for microchip-based bioreactors utilizing living mammalian cells and pressure driven flow. The most important factor in the bioreactor is the cell culture. For proper cell culturing, continuous medium supply from a microfluidic channel and appropriate modification of the channel surface to accommodate cell attachment is required. Moreover, the medium flow rate should be chosen carefully, because shear stress affects cell activity. The techniques presented here could be applied to the development of micro bioreactors such

Developing an Endometrium-on-a-Chip Model to Explore Biological Mechanisms in the Peri-implantation Period of Pregnancy.

The peri-implantation period of pregnancy in mammals is a critical stage for successful embryo implantation and offspring health. Significant molecular and biophysical interactions occur between the mother (uterine endometrium) and the embryo during this time. However, the underlying biological mechanisms contributing to pregnancy success, loss, or repercussions for offspring health remain unclear. Organ-ona-chip technology facilitates in vitro models of physiological cell and tissue environments in 3D, accurately replicating the behaviour of cells and tissues with appropriate flow conditions

Application of next-generation sequencing to study ascitic microbiome in cirrhotic patients with or without spontaneous bacterial peritonitis.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in cirrhotic patients with ascites. The key step in the pathogenesis of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is bacterial translocation from intestinal lumen to mesenteric lymph nodes, and from there to the systemic circulation and ascitic fluid. We aimed to study the ascitic microbiota of cirrhotic patients with or without spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. METHODS: Both the 16S polymerase chain reaction approach and the whole genome shotgun approach were adopted for the next-generation sequencing tec

The development of an EU-wide nutrition and physical activity expert knowledge base to support a personalised mobile application across various EU population groups.

A healthy lifestyle comprising regular physical activity and an adequate diet is imperative for the prevention of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and some cancers. Advances in information computer technology offer the opportunity to provide personalised lifestyle advice directly to the individual through devices such as smartphones or tablets. The overall aim of the PROTEIN project (Wilson-Barnes et al., 2021) was to develop a smartphone application that could provide tailored and dynamic nutrition and physical activity advice directly to the individual in real time. However, to

Association Between Hippocampal Volume and African Neuropsychology Memory Tests in Adult Individuals with Probable Alzheimer's Disease in Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: Western studies indicate potential associations between hippocampal volume and memory in the trajectory of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, limited availability of neuroimaging technology and neuropsychological tests appropriate for sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries makes it difficult to establish neuroanatomical associations of hippocampus and memory in this locale. OBJECTIVE: This study examined hippocampal volumes and memory in healthy control (HC) and probable AD groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). METHODS: Forty-six subjects with probable AD and 29 HC subje

Designing appropriate rehabilitation technology: a mobility device for women with ambulatory disabilities in India.

Mobility is an essential requirement for personal independence and social participation. For persons with an ambulatory disability, a lack of mobility creates barriers to the realization of these goals. In developed countries, significant research and development has resulted in the technological advancement of assistive devices. Unfortunately, transfer of these technologies to developing countries has proven difficult. Consequently, effort has been directed at designing appropriate technology in these countries--most often in the form of wheelchairs and hand-driven tricycles. For activities w

Bacteriology in acute mastoiditis.

During the period from July 1979 to December 1979, the bacteriology of 35 consecutive patients undergoing surgery for acute mastoiditis was studied. The patients' ages ranged from 3 to 13 years. All patients presented with a purulent otorrhea and a postauricular subperiosteal abscess and were subjected to a mastoidectomy within 12 hours of presentation. Specimens were obtained intraoperatively from the mastoid cavity and, using appropriate technology, were cultured for aerobic and anaerobic organisms. Bacteria were isolated from specimens of 32 patients (91.4%); specimens from three patients (

NATIVE-It's Your Game: Adapting a Technology-Based Sexual Health Curriculum for American Indian and Alaska Native youth.

Sexually transmitted infection (STI) and birth rates among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) youth indicate a need for effective middle school HIV/STI and pregnancy prevention curricula to delay, or mitigate, the consequences of early sexual activity. While effective curricula exist, there is a dearth of curricula with content salient to AI/AN youth. Further, there is a lack of sexual health curricula that take advantage of the motivational appeal, reach, and fidelity of communication technology for this population, who are sophisticated technology users. We describe the adaptation process

Using artificial intelligence thanabots as "thanatobots" to assist anatomy learning and professional development: Ghosts masquerading as opportunity?

It has not happened yet, but it may be just around the corner: the development of thanabots, digital representations of deceased persons created by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, and their adoption as educational adjuncts for students in anatomy education. To equip anatomy educators with information to allow them to assess this new technology, this article provides an overview of thanabot technology, together with practical and ethical considerations regarding their use in anatomy education. The new term "thanatobot" describes thanabot use in this hypothetical application. For inst

Survival of Probiotic Bacterial Cells in the Upper Gastrointestinal Tract and the Effect of the Surviving Population on the Colonic Microbial Community Activity and Composition.

Many health-promoting effects have been attributed to the intake of probiotic cells. However, it is important that probiotic cells arrive at the site of their activity in a viable state in order to exert their beneficial effects. Careful selection of the appropriate probiotic formulation is therefore required as mainly the type of probiotic species/strain and the administration strategy may affect survival of the probiotic cells during the upper gastrointestinal (GIT) passage. Therefore, the current study implemented Simulator of the Human Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME®) technology to investigate

Diagnostic yield of blood clot culture in the accurate diagnosis of enteric fever and human brucellosis.

Culture of blood is the most frequent, accurate means of diagnosing bacteremia in enteric fever and brucellosis. However, conventional blood culturing is slow in isolating bacteria causing these diseases. In this work, we evaluated the performance of blood clot culture and conventional whole blood cultures in the accurate diagnosis of enteric fever (253 cases) and human brucellosis (71cases). The blood clot culture was found to be much more sensitive for both Salmonella (more by 34.4%, P< 0.001) and Brucella (more by 22.6%, P<0.001) than whole blood culture. Bacterial growth was significantly
