UNLABELLED: Over recent decades, there has been more evidence of the connection between trauma and depression. More research is needed on the relationship between different types of trauma and their combination (cumulative trauma) with respect to the severity of depressive symptoms. The extent to which trauma and cognitive processes that manifest as polarised or 'black and white' thinking affect the severity of depression has yet to be explored.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this research was to examine the impact of cumulative trauma and polarised thinking on the severity of depressive symptom

BACKGROUND: The computerization of the workforce in the last two decades has led to increases in the incidence of repetitive strain injury (RSI). U.S. Workers Compensation claims made by persons disabled in the upper extremities in 1989 were estimated to be $563 million.
METHOD: Through an investigation of factors that increase the likelihood of contracting an RSI in various industries, the authors suggest a relation between workplace conditions, lack of education about causes of RSI and improper use of equipment among contemporary workers.
RESULTS: A medical term which analyzes the unique h

OBJECTIVES: To examine the reliability of manual tracking performance and its association with impairment and disability in individuals symptomatic of an upper extremity cumulative trauma disorder (CTD).
METHODS: Volunteer and physician referred subjects (100 control, 140 CTD) tracked a target cursor moving quasi-randomly using a hand-held stylus interfaced with a digitizing tablet. Impairment was physician-rated and the Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire measured disability. Subsamples of 25 subjects per group were tested on three occasions.
RESULTS: Reliability of track

Workers' compensation claims in Ohio were evaluated as a source of surveillance data for identifying workplaces at high risk of cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) and analyzed for their demographic and industrial characteristics. During a 5-year period (1980 to 1984), 6,849 workers' compensation claims met the case criteria for CTDs. Tenosynovitis due to continuous motion was the most frequently reported condition (58%), and the wrist was the body part most frequently affected (48%). The highest case rate was observed for female workers in the 36 to 45 age group. Incidence rates for individual

Temperature gradient changes on the surface of the skin or in the middle of the body are signs of a disease. The aim of this study is to develop quantitative models for the prediction of cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) arising from highly repetitive activities, considering risk factors, such as age, gender, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure (BP), respiratory rate (RR), and heart rate, to prevent injuries in manufacturing factory operators. This research involved 19 individuals from the area of sanding and 14 individuals from the area of tolex in manufacturing factories who had their vit

Work related musculoskeletal disorders are seen as an indicating parameter of occupational stress among the women workers engaged in tea leaf plucking operation. The hand plucking (no mechanized plucking is practiced in Assam) being a highly repetitive task requires forceful exertions to reach to the distant periphery of the tea bushes and mechanical compression (pressing against hard surfaces). Specifically it aggravates with awkward positions adopted. The current research addresses to minimize the risk factors associated with CTDs and to ascertain the role of ergonomic design development in

Epidemiologic studies indicate that repetitive (cyclic) occupational activities lead to a cumulative trauma disorder (CTD), and the frequency or velocity of the movement is one of the risk factors. Experimental neurophysiological evidence to confirm the epidemiology is not available. The response of the multifidus muscles to cyclic loading in anterior lumbar flexion-extension was assessed to test the hypothesis that high-frequency loading may induce an acute neuromuscular disorder leading to CTD. Two groups of feline preparations were subjected to cyclic loading with a peak of 20 N: one at 0.2

This article describes a rehabilitation approach for a keyboard operator following radial tunnel decompression and release of the extensor origin of the right elbow. Prior to the patient's returning to work, a clinical electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback device was used to determine which work activities the patient should avoid or alter to reduce strain on her affected muscles. The patient was able to return to work and noticed a considerable reduction of muscle fatigue and pain in the involved muscles. A relatively inexpensive EMG biofeedback device was employed to evaluate the patient's mus

The incidence of cumulative trauma disorder (CTD) has become noteworthy in plants that rely on automated production. This rise was evident in an Ohio poultry company. The purpose of this study was to develop a screening tool to detect employees who might be at risk of sustaining a CTD injury and to identify trends of CTD at specific workstations. Thirty-five employees at three workstations completed a questionnaire and underwent a physical examination. Results identified 24 employees with a potential for CTD, and these employees were recommended for remediation. Job modifications and supportiv

BACKGROUND: The experience of cumulative trauma may be common in bipolar disorder (BD). However, it is not frequently reported as most studies focus on childhood trauma without examining differences in the amount of trauma experienced. This systematic review aimed to determine the prevalence of lifetime cumulative trauma in BD as well as explore associated illness outcomes.
METHODS: A systematic review was completed in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Both the prevalence and outcomes of cumulative trauma in BD were assesse

BACKGROUND: Trauma is highly prevalent in bipolar disorder, and while considerable research has been undertaken in relation to childhood trauma, little is known about the experience and the impact of exposure to multiple trauma types across the lifespan, otherwise known as cumulative trauma. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of cumulative trauma in bipolar disorder and explore its association with illness and other outcomes.
METHODS: Participants were recruited online globally and comprised 114 adults aged 23 to 73 years with BD-I (41.2 %) or BD-II (58.8 %). Participants completed an

A method of describing the musculoskeletal loads in the hand and wrist during manual tasks is presented. A profile of twelve factors is used to quantify the exposure of applicable soft tissues to modes of loading suggested as being related to a number of chronic, work-related musculoskeletal disorders such as chronic muscle strain, tenosynovitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome. These factors include estimates of tendon loads and movement, frictional work done on the tendon sheaths, and muscle activation determined using electromyography. The response of these measures to changes of force, repetiti

A two-page checklist for determining the presence of ergonomic risk factors associated with the development of upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders (e.g., repetitiveness, local mechanical contact stresses, forceful manual exertions, awkward postures, and hand tool usage) was developed and evaluated as part of a joint labour-management ergonomics intervention programme. This checklist was used by plant personnel at four work sites to assess the presence of upper extremity risk factors in 335 manufacturing and warehouse jobs. In addition, results generated by the checklist were compared t

Symptoms of upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) often include weakness, discomfort, pain, numbness and stiffness, which are generally assessed clinically by using static tests or isolated movements. Little is known about the dynamic, functional ability of the upper extremity in CTD, yet, more than impairment, performance variables may relate to disability. The objectives of this study were to determine whether a manual tracking task was sensitive to the presence of symptoms associated with CTD and whether tracking performance related to disability. Forty-five volunteers who had

Typing in the work setting, with its emphasis on speed, force and repetitive movements and its tendency to be performed under less than optimum conditions has been one of the major causes of upper extremity cumulative trauma disorder (CTD). This disorder, also known as overuse syndrome, is a chronic condition believed to result from habitual overuse of the digits, hands or arms. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between typing habits, specifically the influence of typing frequency, speed and style, on the incidence of injury. One hundred Israeli female typists aged be

UNLABELLED: Cutting scissors are important working tools for Nigerian custom tailors (CTs) but its usage apparently does not meet the ergonomics need of these artisans. A survey was carried out amongst CTs using questionnaires to obtain their background social-occupational demographics and observation methods to study their work performance, use of scissors and any cumulative trauma disorder (CTD) in their hands. Thicknesses of various fabrics were measured and comparison between Western world's custom tailoring job and the Nigerian type was done. The results showed some CTD risk factors with
