Iatrogenic artefacts attributable to traditional cupping therapy in a shotgun fatality.

Cupping is a traditional treatment method that has been used for thousands of years to diminish pain, restore appetite and improve digestion, remove tendency to faint or remove 'bad blood' from the body. The suction of the cup is created by fire or mechanical devices. This procedure may result in circular erythema, petechiae, purpura, ecchymosis, burns and may be mistaken for trauma-related ecchymosis or livor mortis. Forty-year-old male was died by shotgun injuries in the same day of the wounding. Circular ecchymoses were observed on the forehead, within the scalp of occipital region, the bac

Musculoskeletal Therapies: Acupuncture, Dry Needling, Cupping.

Integrative medicine, including acupuncture, dry needling, and cupping, is being used increasingly in the United States. Evidence regarding their efficacy in the management of musculoskeletal conditions is heterogeneous and subject to several limitations. Despite these limitations, acupuncture consistently has been shown to be more effective than no treatment and is relatively safe. For chronic back pain, it is recommended as a first-line noninvasive therapy. For neck pain, acupuncture provides benefits when it is combined with other treatments. Dry needling is similar to acupuncture and frequ

Blood-letting cupping therapy for incision infection after laparoscopic surgery: a case report.

Laparoscopic surgery, as a minimally invasive technique, has gained widespread recognition in clinical practice over recent decades. However, surgical site infection (SSI) following laparoscopy remains a concern that cannot be overlooked. SSI refers to infections related to surgery that occur within 30 days after the operative procedure at or near the surgical incision, or within 12 months if an implant is placed, and includes superficial incisional, deep incisional, and organ/space infections. According to current epidemiological data, the incidence of incisional SSI after laparoscopic surger

Guillain-Barré syndrome following Escherichia coli meningitis after cupping therapy: a case report.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute immune-mediated polyneuropathy, whereas Escherichia coli meningitis following cupping and acupuncture is a rare but severe infection. GBS as a neurological complication after E. coli meningitis is exceedingly uncommon. We report the case of a 53-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus and chronic renal failure who developed headache, vomiting, and altered consciousness four days after undergoing cupping and acupuncture for low back pain. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis and next-generation sequencing confirmed E. coli meningitis. Although me

Cupping Therapy as a Potential Complimentary Treatment for Meniere's Disease: A Case Report.

Meniere's disease is defined by the presence of three essential symptoms: episodic vertigo, tinnitus, and sensorineural hearing loss. The mainstay of its management constitutes lifestyle modification and medical and surgical therapies. Cupping therapy is an ancient treatment that is still widely used especially in the Middle East, Africa, and the United Kingdom. This study portraits the case of a 54-year-old patient suffering from long-standing Meniere's disease. The patient was treated with the routine treatment that was to no avail. It was decided that the patient undergoes cupping therapy.

Extracranial vertebral artery rupture likely secondary to "cupping therapy" superimposed on spontaneous dissection.

The extracranial vertebral artery (VA) is vulnerable to dissection and the V3 segment is the most common location for dissection. Dissection accounts for about 2% of all ischemic strokes and can occur after trauma or chiropractic neck maneuvers. We report an extremely rare case of spontaneous extracranial VA dissection presenting with posterior neck hematoma aggravated after cupping therapy, a treatment in traditional Oriental medicine. We treated the patient successfully by endovascular treatment without any complication.

Decrease of optic disc cupping and pallor of ocular hypertensives with timolol therapy.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether timolol drops compared to placebo drops had a significant effect on optic disc cupping and pallor in ocular hypertensives. METHODS: Thirty-seven ocular hypertensives were randomly assigned to placebo or 0.5% timolol drops to both eyes in a double masked clinical trial. Measurements of ocular pressure and photographs of the optic disc for cupping by photogrammetry and pallor by computerized image analysis were made at about 3 month intervals, for 18 to 24 months of follow-up. RESULTS: None of the subjects developed visual field loss

Combined Cupping and Acupuncture Therapy for Dorsocervical Fat Pad: A Series of Case Studies.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, with the increasing prevalence of cervical spondylosis, neck-shoulder syndrome, and scapulohumeral periarthritis, dorsocervical fat pad (DCFP) has become more commonly observed and is no longer considered exclusively a rare disease entity. Consequently, there is a growing need for safer, more effective, and minimally invasive therapeutic strategies to manage the rising number of patients presenting with DCFP. METHODS: A total of 42 patients diagnosed with DCFP in our hospital between December 2023 and January 2025 were enrolled in this study. The cohort comprised

Integrating Cupping Therapy in the Management of Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Case Report.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is most often defined as a rapid hearing loss of ≥ 30 decibels across at least three contiguous audiometric frequencies over a time of ≤ 72 hours. Cupping therapy has been practiced across the world for thousands of years. Cupping therapy is practiced by creating suction inside cups that are placed on predefined skin areas. Our case is a 48-year-old female with a four-year history of Meniere's disease, recurrent tinnitus, episodes of dizziness attacks, and fullness of the right ear. The patient developed sudden sensorineural hearing loss. She received

Alternative Therapy for Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Moving Cupping along Meridians.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a prevalent respiratory condition characterized by persistent and progressive airflow obstruction, resulting in chronic respiratory symptoms like dyspnea, cough, and sputum production, accompanied by wheezing, chest tightness, fatigue, and reduced physical activity. Under the influence of various factors, patients with COPD often experience acute exacerbations, which have a significant negative impact on the prognosis, quality of life, and life span of patients. As a branch of cupping therapy, moving cupping along meridians is an essential comple

Cervical Artery Dissection Caused by Electrical Cupping Therapy with High-Negative Pressure - Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Cervical artery dissection is an important cause of stroke in the young. The etiology is still discussed controversial. The most obvious reason for a dissection of extracranial arteries is due to a trauma, eg. after car accidents or other high speed traumas such as high-velocity road traffic accidents. Besides these clear cases, chiropractic neck maneuvers represent potential reasons for vessel injuries. CASE PRESENTATION: We here report a rare case of secondary cervical artery dissection after so-called cupping therapy and a preventive treatment with a direct oral anticoagulant.
