Prevalence of congenital anomalies in the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao.

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies represent an important global health issue. Data on the prevalence and pattern of congenital anomalies in the Caribbean region are scarce and lacking altogether in Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao (ABC islands). METHODS: We performed a population-based surveillance study to determine the prevalence of structural congenital anomalies in the ABC islands, including all live births and stillbirths between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2017 with major congenital anomalies according to EUROCAT guide 1.5. Terminations of pregnancy for fetal anomaly were included as well

The Impact of Health Risk Communication: A Study on the Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika Epidemics in Curaçao, Analyzed by the Social Amplification of Risk Framework (SARF).

Epidemics of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika have been threatening the Caribbean. Since risk communication (RC) plays a fundamental role in preventing and controlling diseases understanding how RC works is essential for enabling risk-reducing behavior. This multimethod qualitative study compares news reports with local's and health professional's perspectives, currently lacking in RC research. It was found that RC strategies were obstructed by a lack of governmental structure, organization, and communication. The content analysis showed that the majority of newspaper articles contained negative

Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia in skin of colour: a dermoscopic, histopathological and radiological approach.

Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), also known as Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome, is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterised by abnormal blood vessel formation, leading to recurrent epistaxis, mucocutaneous telangiectasias and arteriovenous malformations. The diagnosis is clinically based on the Curacao criteria with the triad of mucocutaneous and mucosal telangiectasia (often located on the lips), epistaxis and positive family history. In this case report, we present a woman in her early 50s with symptoms of frequent epistaxis, painful lesions on fingertips and subungual bleedi

[Iron deficiency anemia in a patient with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia. Case report].

Rendu-Osler-Weber disease or hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare autosomal dominant disease. It is characterized by vascular dysplasia with the formation of telangiectasias on the skin, mucous membranes of the respiratory and digestive tracts, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in the internal organs, which is manifested by bleeding. Diagnosis is based on Curacao criteria: recurrent and spontaneous nosebleeds, multiple telangiectases on the characteristic localizations, AVMs in one or more of the internal organs, a family history of HHT (i.e. first-degree relative who meets t

Molecular systematics of the heteronemertean genus Dushia (Nemertea, Pilidiophora), with descriptions of D. wijnhoffae sp. nov. and D. nigra species complex comb. nov.

The heteronemertean genus Dushia Corrêa, 1963 was established for what was identified as D. atra (Girard, 1851) (originally Meckelia atra) based on material from littoral, shallow waters in Curaçao, while the nominal species Meckelia atra was originally described from deep water off Florida Cape. In this paper, we conclude that the type species for Dushia has been misidentified. Based on specimens from the Caribbean, we establish D. wijnhoffae Schwartz Norenburg sp. nov. to represent the true identity of the genus, according to Article 70.3.2 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclatur

Brain abscess as an initial presentation in a patient of hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia caused by a novel ENG mutation.

Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare inherited autosomal-dominant vascular dysplasia involving multiple organs. Brain abscess is an uncommon and potential fatal complication. We report a case of HHT caused by a novel ENG mutation who initially presented as brain abscess. The patient, with a family history of epistaxis, presented with fever, headache and right-sided haemiparesis. Upon examination, brain MRI showed a contrast-enhanced abscess on the left fronto-parietal region. Open brain drainage was performed and pus culture yielded Actinomyces meyeri. The chest image reveale

A Case of Anaphylaxis to Patent Blue in a Patient with Sentinel Lymph Node Excision.

In medicine, patent blue violet (PBV) is utilized for staining lymphatic vessels in sentinel lymph node (SLN) surgery. Moreover, PBV (also called E131 ) is used as food additive. We report on a 51-year-old non-atopic female with early breast cancer, who was scheduled for SLN excision and experienced an intra-operative anaphylactic reaction. In diagnostics the skin prick test (SPT) was positive to PBV. Hypersensitivity reactions to PBV can arise after the first exposure in surgery as sensitization may arise from either PBV (E131) in foods (i.e. in sweets or blue curacao) or from other structura

[Peritoneal tuberculosis].

Peritoneal tuberculosis was diagnosed in a 38-year-old man from Curaçao, a 42-year-old Dutch man and a 38-year-old woman from Surinam. All patients had been living in the Netherlands for over a decade at the time of diagnosis. Time to diagnosis and treatment varied between patients. Factors contributing to delayed diagnosis were nonspecific symptoms, failure to consider tuberculosis exposure, consulting of more than one physician and delay in obtaining adequate material for histopathologic and microbiologic tests. These cases show that peritoneal tuberculosis can represent a diagnostic challen

Co-existing Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage and Deep Vein Thrombosis in a Patient with Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia: Management Dilemma.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is described as a vascular defect, causing recurrent visceral and mucocutaneous bleeding. It is an autosomal dominant disease and has variable expressivity. The phenotypic presentation is dependent on the type of gene defect. Recurrent epistaxis is the most common symptom, along with gastrointestinal (GI), pulmonary, and arteriovenous malformations (AVM). The Curacao criteria are used to make the diagnosis of HHT. Genetic sequence testing for endoglin (ENG) or activin receptor-like kinase type 1 (ALK1) can be performed to confirm the diagnosis. Howev

Tobacco Use and Parental Monitoring-Observations from Three Diverse Island Nations-Cook Islands, Curaçao, and East Timor.

Tobacco use among adolescents is a global problem of public health importance. This study examined the profile of differences and similarities in adolescent tobacco use, and the role of parental monitoring activities among adolescents in three island nations of varying economic status: Cook Islands, Curaçao, and East Timor. Using nationally representative data we conducted regression modeling to determine the effect of four types of parental monitoring activities on tobacco use. Within a recall period of 30 days prior to being surveyed, 29.7% of students in East Timor, 21.6% in Cook Islands, a

Bleeding and clotting in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a relatively common inherited vascular disorder that was first described in 1864, and is notable for epistaxis, telangiectasia, and arterial venous malformations. While genetic tests are available, the diagnosis remains clinical, and is based on the Curacao criteria. Patients with HHT are at increased risk for both bleeding and clotting events. Because of these competing complications, hematologists are often faced with difficult clinical decisions. While the majority of management decisions revolve around bleeding complications, it is not infrequ
