Natural curcumin was evaluated as a potential photosensitizer for oral applications. The photocytotoxicity of curcumin on salivary gland acinar cells (SM 10-12) was investigated in five aqueous preparations consisting of 5% DMSO, non-ionic micelles, cyclodextrin, liposomes, or a hydrophilic polymer. The difference in phototoxic effects between natural curcumin and synthetic curcumin was examined. Cytotoxicity in SM 10-12 cells exposed to curcumin in the concentration range 0.4-13.5 microM was investigated by MTT test, a fluorescence-staining microscopic test, and by Western immunoblotting tech

Curcumin, bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione, has potential as a photosensitiser for photodynamic treatment of localised superficial infections in e.g., the mouth or skin. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial phototoxic potential of a series of five curcumin derivatives. The gram-positive Enterococcus faecalis and the gram-negative Escherichia coli were used as bacterial models. The bacteria were exposed to curcuminoid preparations in two concentrations (2.5 and 25.0 microM) in combination with a constant irradiation dose (5 J/cm2). The U

Curcumin has potential as a photosensitiser (PS) in photodynamic therapy (PDT) for localised superficial infections. However, it is a challenge to make an optimal curcumin formulation in which curcumin has acceptable solubility and stability at physiological pH and combined with high selective phototoxic activity towards bacteria. In the present study, the phototoxic effects of curcumin against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria were investigated in selected aqueous preparations. The gram-positive Enterococcus faecalis and Streptococcus intermedius and the gram-negative Escherichia coli

We have evaluated the comparative effect of curcumin (diferuloyl methane) and its analogue [bis-1,7-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-hepta-1,6-diene-3,5-dione] (BDMC-A) on carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Administration of carbon tetrachloride (3 ml/kg/week) for three months significantly (P<0.05) increased the levels of marker enzymes such as aspartate transaminase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT). The levels of plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and lipid hydroperoxides were also significantly (P<0.05) increased. We have observed

Curcumin is a natural acidic polyphenol extracted from turmeric with a wide range of biological and pharmacological effects. However, the application of curcumin for animal production and human life is limited by a low oral bioavailability. In this study, natural curcumin was prepared for the curcumin β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex (CUR-β-CD), curcumin solid dispersion (CUR-PEG-6000), and curcumin phospholipid complex (CUR-HSPC) using co-precipitation, melting, and solvent methods, respectively. Curcumin complex formations were monitored using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffra

Curcumin, an active constituent of the spice turmeric, is well known for its chemopreventive properties and is found to be beneficial in treating various disorders including skin diseases. Curcumin protects skin by quenching free radicals and reducing inflammation through the inhibition of nuclear factor-kappa B. Curcumin also affects other signaling pathways including transforming growth factor-β and mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway. Curcumin also modulates the phase II detoxification enzymes which are crucial in detoxification reactions and for protection against oxidative stress. In

Turmeric root has been used medicinally in China and India for thousands of years. The active components are thought to be the curcuminoids, primarily curcumin, which is commonly available worldwide as a standardized extract. This article reviews the pharmacology of curcuminoids, their use and efficacy, potential adverse effects, and dosage and standardization. Preclinical studies point to mechanisms of action that are predominantly anti-inflammatory and antineoplastic, while early human clinical trials suggest beneficial effects for dyspepsia, peptic ulcer, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumat

Antibiotics have the potential to have both direct and indirect detrimental impacts on animal and human health. For instance, antibiotic residues and pathogenic resistance against the drug are very common in poultry because of antibiotics used in their feed. It is necessary to use natural feed additives as effective alternatives instead of synthetic antibiotics. Curcumin, a polyphenol compound one of the natural compounds from the rhizomes of turmeric (Curcuma spp.) and has been suggested to have several therapeutic benefits in the treatment of human diseases. Curcumin exhibited some positive

Although mucoadhesive drug carriers for the gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) have been reported, the mucoadhesive property and drug release characteristics have never been evaluated separately, whilst the adherence of the carriers to the surface of GIT has not been directly visualized. Here, a monopolymeric carrier made from ethylcellulose (EC) and a dipolymeric carrier made from a blend of methylcellulose (MC) and EC (ECMC) were easily fabricated through a self-assembling process and yielded the highest reported curcumin loading of ~48-49%. Both curcumin loaded ECMC (C-ECMC) and curcumin loaded

Chronic inflammation is a well-established risk factor for cancer progression. This review aims to determine how persistent inflammatory signaling reshapes the tissue microenvironment to favor tumor cell proliferation, survival, and progression. It also discusses the role of cytokines such as IL-6 and TGF-β, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the transcription factors NF-κB and STAT3 in inflammation and in the tumor microenvironment. Sustained activation of these pathways promotes genomic instability, loss of tumor suppressor gene function, enhanced oncogene expression, and resistance to apopt

UNLABELLED: Nanodisks (NDs) are nanoscale, disk-shaped phospholipid bilayers whose edge is stabilized by apolipoproteins. In the present study, NDs were formulated with the bioactive polyphenol curcumin at a 6:1 phospholipid-to-curcumin molar ratio. Atomic force microscopy revealed that curcumin-NDs are particles with diameters <50 nm and the thickness of a phospholipid bilayer. When formulated in NDs, curcumin is water soluble and gives rise to a characteristic absorbance spectrum with a peak centered at 420 nm. Fluorescence spectroscopy of curcumin-NDs provided evidence of self-quenching. In

In recent years, epidemiological studies have suggested that metabolic disorders are nutritionally dependent. A healthy diet that is rich in polyphenols may be beneficial in the treatment of metabolic diseases such as polycystic ovary syndrome, metabolic syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disease, and, in particular, atherosclerosis. Curcumin is a polyphenol found in turmeric and has been reported to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, anti-atherosclerotic, and antidiabetic properties, among others. This review summarizes the influence of supplementa

With rising skin cancer rates and interest in preventing photoaging, adjuvants for sunscreens are in high demand. The potential of curcumin has been posited due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and wound healing properties. In prior studies, curcumin decreased UV-induced inflammation, apoptotic changes in human keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts, and the expression of matrix metalloproteinases. However, curcumin's utility has been hindered by poor aqueous solubility and rapid degradation in vivo. To overcome these limitations, we synthesized curcumin nanoparticles (curc-np), which offer
