Exploring Social Media Rumination: Associations With Bullying, Cyberbullying, and Distress.

In this study, we examined students' perceptions of peer aggression occurring within their school environment and how these perceptions are interconnected with both social media rumination and distress. Social media usage is associated with a range of negative mental health and interpersonal outcomes for adolescents. Social media use can increase youth's vulnerability to peer victimization and psychosocial difficulties. In addition, ruminating when sad or stressed has been linked to elevated distress for youth experiencing peer aggression. Yet rumination specifically regarding social media act

Cyberbullying through the lens of trauma: an empirical examination of US youth.

BACKGROUND: Scholars have argued that cyberbullying should be characterized as an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) given its potential for traumatic impacts on youth development. Considering the current attention surrounding mental health and well-being among adolescents, it seems critical to empirically measure this relationship, and also determine if some types have a stronger negative influence. METHODS: Data utilized in this study were derived from a survey conducted on a nationally-representative sample in 2023 involving 2,697 English-speaking middle and high school students aged 13 to

Adverse childhood experiences and early adolescent cyberbullying in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: With the increasing use of social media and online platforms among adolescents, the relationship between traumatic life events and cyberbullying remains unclear. METHODS: We analyzed longitudinal data from 10,317 participants in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, baseline (2016-2018, ages 9-10 years) to Year 2. Logistic regression analyses were used

Cyberbullying and Gambling Disorder: Associations with Emotion Regulation and Coping Strategies.

The presence of unsuitable coping and emotion regulation strategies in young populations with gambling disorder (GD) and in those who have experienced cyberbullying victimization has been suggested. However, this association has not been explored in depth. In this study, our aim was to analyze individual differences in emotion regulation, coping strategies, and substance abuse in a clinical sample of adolescents and young adult patients with GD (n = 31) and in a community sample (n = 250). Furthermore, we aimed to examine the association between cyberbullying and GD. Participants were evaluate

Science Mapping: A Bibliometric Analysis on Cyberbullying and the Psychological Dimensions of the Self.

Cyberbullying prevalence is increasing in the world, being a form of abuse that follows victims into their most intimate settings. Cyberbullying affects victims' mental health, self-esteem, emotions, and academic performance. Cyberbullies present low levels of self-control and empathy. This research aimed to map scientific research on Cyberbullying and the Psychological Dimensions of the Self. A bibliometric analysis of scientific documents published in journals indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) was performed. Traditional bibliometric laws were applied and VOSviewer was used to generate visu

Unveiling Roots of Chinese Adolescent Cyberbullying Through Explainable Machine Learning Approach.

Cyberbullying poses a substantial threat to adolescents' well-being, yet prevention efforts remain limited by insufficient understanding of its multilevel determinants. Guided by ecological systems theory, this study applies explainable machine learning (ML) to examine factors associated with cyberbullying perpetration across individual, family, peer, class, school, and online contexts. Questionnaire data from 2286 adolescents (Mage = 13.46 years, SD = 0.93; 11-16 years) were analyzed. Random Forest and XGBoost achieved out-of-sample accuracies of 87.35% and 85.95%, respectively. The experimental group received a storytelling program consisting of four sessions. Data were collected between September 2024 and May 2025 using a Personal Information Form, the Cyberbullying Triangulation Qu

Development and validation of a scale of cyberbullying and online aggressive conduct in Brazilian adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Cyberbullying (CYB) is an increasing problem, especially among young people, requiring new ways to measure this construct. Currently, there are gaps in the development of a scale to validate the identification of CYB. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and validate the Scale of Cyberbullying and Online Aggressive Conduct (SCOAC), considering a sample of 642 adolescents (11-17 years old). METHODS: For the internal structure, we conducted Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Network Analysis (NA) on 60% of the sample, followed by Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) on the remain

Patterns of involvement in bullying and cyberbullying among adolescents: A latent class analysis.

Bullying is a critical problem due to its high prevalence and health outcomes. Cyberbullying, a more recent form, tends to show worse outcomes, especially when it co-occurs with face-to-face contexts. This study aimed to identify latent classes of adolescent involvement in bullying and cyberbullying, looking for overlap between these indicators, and their associations with psychological symptoms, substance use, screen time and sociodemographic factors in a census-based sample of 4.280 Brazilian students from 13 schools, ranging from the seventh grade of middle school to the twelfth grade of hi

Do children's friendships promote or inhibit cyberbullying? The dual role of friendship.

BACKGROUND: This study explored the influence of children’s friendship on cyberbullying, incorporating the Belonging Hypothesis and the General Aggression Model. It examined the roles of Internet use frequency and online peer support in the relationship between friendship and cyberbullying. Friendship was considered the independent variable, while Internet use frequency and online peer support served as mediating variables, and cyberbullying was the dependent variable. METHODS: A survey was conducted among 1,016 children from grades 3 to 6 in two primary schools using the “Children’s Friendshi

A Phenomenological Investigation into Cyberbullying as Experienced by People Identifying as Transgender or Gender Diverse.

Cyberbullying can present a serious risk for adolescents and young adults, with severe effects on victims including adverse mental health outcomes and increased risk of suicide. Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals are significantly more likely to experience cyberbullying. However, little is presently known about the lived cyberbullying experiences of TGD adults despite the prevalence of cyberbullying experienced by the TGD community. TGD participants (n = 66, M = 24 years) were recruited through snowball sampling and completed an online questionnaire as part of a larger study, whi

Family poly-victimization and cyberbullying among adolescents in a Chinese school sample.

The sustained increase in their use of social networking facilitates the development of adolescents but comes with the risk of cyberbullying, which creates new challenges in regard to adolescent protection. Past evidence shows that family victimization may play an essential role in the way adolescents learn cyberbullying behaviors. Yet, research on the co-occurrence of family victimization and cyberbullying is limited. This study aims to investigate the associations between cyberbullying and family victimization among adolescents, and to examine the health correlates of cyberbullying and famil

Spinning our wheels: improving our ability to respond to bullying and cyberbullying.

Bullying is physical and or psychological abuse perpetuated by one powerful child upon another, with the intention to harm or dominate. Bullying and aggression in schools has reached epidemic proportions. Abusive bullying behaviors begin in elementary school, peak during middle school, and begin to subside in high school. Bullying behaviors are associated with catastrophic violence. Cyberbullying has emerged as one result of the increasingly online social life in which modern teens and children engage. Mediation may be inappropriate. The only safety mechanism that children will ultimately reta
