The effect of seasonal and extreme floods on hospitalizations for Legionnaires' disease in the United States, 2000-2011.

BACKGROUND: An increasing severity of extreme storms and more intense seasonal flooding are projected consequences of climate change in the United States. In addition to the immediate destruction caused by storm surges and catastrophic flooding, these events may also increase the risk of infectious disease transmission. We aimed to determine the association between extreme and seasonal floods and hospitalizations for Legionnaires' disease in 25 US states during 2000-2011. METHODS: We used a nonparametric bootstrap approach to examine the association between Legionnaires' disease hospitalizati

Long-lasting household damage from Cyclone Idai increases malaria risk in rural western Mozambique.

Cyclone Idai in 2019 was one of the worst tropical cyclones recorded in the Southern Hemisphere. The storm caused catastrophic damage and led to a humanitarian crisis in Mozambique. The affected population suffered a cholera epidemic on top of housing and infrastructure damage and loss of life. The housing and infrastructure damage sustained during Cyclone Idai still has not been addressed in all affected communities. This is of grave concern because storm damage results in poor housing conditions which are known to increase the risk of malaria. Mozambique has the 4th highest malaria prevalenc

Increasing landslide susceptibility and intensity under climate change for Aotearoa New Zealand.

Extreme weather events like tropical cyclones can trigger large numbers of landslides across vast areas due to extreme rainfall. Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023 triggered ~ 800,000 landslides across the North Island of New Zealand and is one of the most extreme landslide-triggering storms recorded to date. While climate change is expected to increase the intensity of future tropical cyclones, whether this translates into increased landslide numbers from extratropical cyclonic movement towards the New Zealand landmass remains contentious. Here we show that under a + 2 °C warming scenario, a

Impacts of different grades of tropical cyclones on infectious diarrhea in Guangdong, 2005-2011.

OBJECTIVE: Guangdong province is one of the most vulnerable provinces to tropical cyclones in China. Most prior studies concentrated on the relationship between tropical cyclones and injuries and mortality. This study aimed to explore the impacts of different grades of tropical cyclones on infectious diarrhea incidence in Guangdong province, from 2005 to 2011. METHODS: Mann-Whitney U test was firstly used to examine if infectious diarrhea were sensitive to tropical cyclone. Then unidirectional 1:1 case-crossover design was performed to quantitatively evaluate the relationship between daily nu

Impacts of tropical cyclones on Northwest Atlantic seabirds: insights from a Category 1 hurricane.

Tropical cyclones are annual occurrences in the western North Atlantic Ocean, where many seabird species are vulnerable to the environmental factors associated with extreme weather events. We summarize the history of tropical cyclones in Newfoundland, Canada, which hosts globally significant populations of seabirds. We examine the interactions that historical tropical cyclones have had with breeding seabirds by plotting the temporal association of Category 1 hurricanes with the breeding phenology of colonial seabirds in Newfoundland and identifying which major colonies have fallen within the p

Comparison and Analysis of Detection Methods for Typhoon-Storm Surges Based on Tide-Gauge Data-Taking Coasts of China as Examples.

Global warming is predicted to lead to a new geographic and spatial distribution of storm-surge events and an increase in their activity intensity. Therefore, it is necessary to detect storm-surge events in order to reveal temporal and spatial variations in their activity intensity. This study attempted to detect storm-surge events from the perspective of detecting outliers. Four common outlier-detection methods, the Pauta criterion (PC), Chauvenet criterion (CC), Pareto distribution (PD) and kurtosis coefficient (KC), were used to detect the storm-surge events from the hourly residual water l

A potential explanation for the global increase in tropical cyclone rapid intensification.

Tropical cyclone rapid intensification events often cause destructive hurricane landfalls because they are associated with the strongest storms and forecasts with the highest errors. Multi-decade observational datasets of tropical cyclone behavior have recently enabled documentation of upward trends in tropical cyclone rapid intensification in several basins. However, a robust anthropogenic signal in global intensification trends and the physical drivers of intensification trends have yet to be identified. To address these knowledge gaps, here we compare the observed trends in intensification

South Atlantic explosive cyclones in 2014-2015: study employing NCEP2 and MERRA-2 reanalyses.

An analysis of explosive cyclone cases was produced by comparing the reanalysis of MERRA-2 (high spatial resolution) and NCEP2 (low spatial resolution) to South Atlantic in the 2014-2015 period. A total of 51 cases were found, of which 49 were detected by the first reanalysis and 33 by the second (2 cases identified by NCEP2 were not identified by MERRA-2). Spring was the dominant season in the formation of the cases in both reanalyses. It was observed that most systems are formed preferentially eastward of a preexisting trough at higher levels, while others are formed under an almost zonal up

Earlier onset of North Atlantic hurricane season with warming oceans.

Numerous Atlantic basin tropical cyclones have recently developed prior to the official start of hurricane season, including several pre-season landfalls in the continental United States. Pre-season and early-season tropical cyclones disproportionately affect populated landmasses, often producing outsized precipitation impacts. Here we show a significant trend towards earlier onset of tropical cyclone activity in the North Atlantic basin, with threshold dates of the first three percentiles of accumulated cyclone energy shifting earlier at a rate exceeding five days decade-1 since 1979, even co

Long-term Impact of Tropical Cyclones on Disease Exacerbation Among Children with Asthma in the Eastern United States, 2000-2018.

BACKGROUND: Tropical cyclones are associated with acute increases in mortality and morbidity, but few studies have examined their longer-term health consequences. We assessed whether tropical cyclones are associated with a higher frequency of symptom exacerbation among children with asthma in the following 12 months in eastern United States counties, 2000-2018. METHODS: We defined exposure to tropical cyclones as a maximum sustained windspeed >21 meters/second at the county center and used coarsened exact matching to match each exposed county to one or more unexposed counties. We used longitu

Strengthening tropical cyclones are associated with more frequent hazardous material pipeline failures in the Eastern US.

Over 30,000 hazardous material pipeline (HMP) failures have caused nearly $11 billion in damages since 1970. Tropical cyclones, which cause more infrastructure damage than all other forms of natural disasters combined, are thought to be under-attributed causes of HMP failures, largely due to historic policy around pipeline failure reporting. This study defines tropical cyclone-associated HMP failure frequency based on spatiotemporal concomitance, while detrending for background HMP failure rates, and explores the relationship between the likelihood and frequency of HMP failures and tropical cy

Pelagic seabirds reduce risk by flying into the eye of the storm.

Cyclones can cause mass mortality of seabirds, sometimes wrecking thousands of individuals. The few studies to track pelagic seabirds during cyclones show they tend to circumnavigate the strongest winds. We tracked adult shearwaters in the Sea of Japan over 11 y and found that the response to cyclones varied according to the wind speed and direction. In strong winds, birds that were sandwiched between the storm and mainland Japan flew away from land and toward the eye of the storm, flying within ≤30 km of the eye and tracking it for up to 8 h. This exposed shearwaters to some of the highest wi

Shifting cyclone travel speed and its impact on global mangrove ecosystems.

Cyclones cause major damage to mangrove ecosystems globally. While this damage is projected to increase as storms intensify with climate change, the consequences of changes in cyclone attributes other than wind speed remain largely unexplored. Here, we show that shifts in cyclone travel speed may also dramatically alter the risks and mechanisms of damage. By developing an interpretable machine learning model trained with all cyclones recorded worldwide from 2001 to 2021, we find that fast-moving cyclones tend to be especially destructive on steeply sloping coasts, exacerbating physical damage,

Impacts of tropical cyclones and accompanying precipitation on infectious diarrhea in cyclone landing areas of Zhejiang Province, China.

BACKGROUND: Zhejiang Province, located in southeastern China, is frequently hit by tropical cyclones. This study quantified the associations between infectious diarrhea and the seven tropical cyclones that landed in Zhejiang from 2005-2011 to assess the impacts of the accompanying precipitation on the studied diseases. METHOD: A unidirectional case-crossover study design was used to evaluate the impacts of tropical storms and typhoons on infectious diarrhea. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to eliminate multicollinearity. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to esti

Do typhoon storm surges affect bank performance in coastal regions? Empirical evidence from China.

Typhoon storm surges cause significant damage to economic activities and have a huge impact on the financial sector. Using panel data of 170 local commercial banks in China's coastal regions from 2008 to 2022, this study explores the impact of typhoon storm surges on bank performance. The study finds that typhoon storm surges significantly reduce bank performance, with a greater impact on banks in the southern and eastern marine economic circles, as well as those primarily serving rural and "Tam Nong" economies. Typhoon storm surges affect bank performance by causing economic losses to bank's
