INTRODUCTION: Instillation of cyclopentolate drops with their irritant effect is difficult for children to bear. The purpose of this study was to compare the tolerance and efficacy of cyclopentolate spray versus drops.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The cycloplegic effect of cyclopentolate spray prepared and conditioned in the hospital was compared with drops in 62 eyes of 32 children consulting in our department. The nonparametric Wilcoxon test for paired data was used to assume there was no significant difference between the refractive measurements with spray or drops.
RESULTS: The mean age of our

Cyclopentolate is widely used in ophthalmology for its intense mydriatic and cycloplegic activity. Systemic side effects have been described in both adults and children. Myoclonic seizure is a rare side effect of eye drops that are used in eye examinations. We report herein a case of convulsion in a three month- old girl following cyclopentolate hydrochloride and phenylephrine hydrochloride eye drops, which were used in advance of ophthalmoscopy for examination of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Physicians should be aware of the uncommon systemic side effects of cyclopentolate, and drops sho

Significant elevations of IOP, i. e. responses, occurred in eyes with suspected or untreated open-angle glaucoma during the mydriasis test with 1% cyclopentolate (CPT). The possible role of pigment in the IOP elevations seen in the responders was studied. Pigment was liberated in the aqueous, sometimes very profusely, in 88 (31.9%) of 276 eyes during CPT. The maximal IOP elevations, ad 20 mmHg, were seen in just these eyes. They were eyes with capsular or pigmentary glaucoma or eyes in which exceptionally heavy pigment was demonstrated in the chamber angle for other reasons. There was a statis

Fluorescein angiography of the iris (IFAG) was performed on 15 patients with a positive cyclopentolate response (IOP elevation greater than or equal to 8 mmHg) in 17 eyes to the cyclopentolate provocative test. The chamber angles were open in all the eyes. Seven of the responder eyes had capsular glaucoma undergoing treatment, six had simple glaucoma, two had pigmentary glaucoma and two suspicion of open-angle glaucoma. The object was to study with IFAG whether vascular changes can be established in the iris of the responder eyes such as could have a role in the elevation of IOP. All the eyes

BACKGROUND: Cycloplegic refraction is important in assessing children with hypermetropia. Atropine, though the gold standard cycloplegic agent for refraction in children, has a long duration of action and more severe side effects compared to short-acting cycloplegic agents. The aim of the study was to compare the cycloplegic effect of atropine with cyclopentolate and tropicamide combination in children with hypermetropia.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This was a crossover interventional study in children with hypermetropia. Cycloplegic refraction using two separate regimens of cycloplegic drugs was d

To find the optimal dosage of cyclopentolate 1% for cycloplegic refraction in hypermetropes with brown irides, we investigated the difference in cycloplegic auto-refractions obtained after one, two, and three instillations in the same patient. The mean hypermetropia found after three instillations was statistically significantly more compared to that found after one instillation. There was no statistically significant difference in the mean hypermetropia between two and three instillations. There was no significant effect of gender, age, and the presence and type of horizontal deviation. These

Posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implantation is a common option for correcting moderate-to-high ocular refractive defects. Because this pIOL is implanted on ciliary sulcus, the distance between the back surface of the pIOL and the anterior surface of the crystalline lens, that it is known as vault, should be measured in different conditions to ensure the technique's safety. Cyclopentolate is a drug that dilates the pupil and relaxes accommodation (cycloplegia). It is often used for different ocular examinations and for other medical purposes. However, there is no evidence of t

INTRODUCTION: Cycloplegia allows for an objective refraction in children. Atropine is the gold standard but causes prolonged blurred vision. Cyclopentolate is less effective but less disabling. Tropicamide is a weak cycloplegic. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a cyclopentolate and tropicamide combination (CTA) versus atropine for refraction in black children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a prospective study between October 2011 and July 2012 on all children seen in consultation. Objective refraction was performed after cycloplegia with cyclopentolate 0.5% combined with tropic

The effect of mucoadhesive polymeric vehicles on the mydriatic efficacy, and on the systemic and ocular absorption of cyclopentolate from eyedrops was studied in albino rabbits. Combining cyclopentolate base to polygalacturonic (CY-PGA) or hyaluronic (CY-HA) acid resulted in an increased mydriatic effect when compared with cyclopentolate hydrochloride (CY-HCl). During the first half an hour, the systemic absorption of cyclopentolate was lower after CY-PGA than after CY-HCl. The ocular penetration of cyclopentolate, based on drug concentrations in aqueous humor 30 minutes after the eyedrop inst
