The burden of cyclosporiasis in immuno-compromised patients: A growing public health issue lessons from case studies.

Cyclospora cayetanensis is an emerging notifiable food-and-water-borne coccidian parasite causing gastro-intestinal-disease in humans. Detailed information about its biology-associated risk-factors and routes of transmission remain poorly understood; the lack-of-comprehensive epidemiological data underlines a critical need for targeted research into effective prevention and control. Acid variable (pink to brilliant red colour) oocysts of Cyclospora spp. were observed in 16/162 samples, predominantly in 51-60 years males in October. Most cases were among transplant recipients presenting with di

Shedding new light on Cyclospora: how the use of ultraviolet fluorescence microscopy can improve diagnosis of cyclosporiasis.

UNLABELLED: Cyclosporiasis has historically been underdiagnosed due to a lack of clinical recognition and challenges in laboratory detection. Microscopic detection of Cyclospora requires either the modified Kinyoun's acid-fast or safranin stains, which are not part of the standard ova-and-parasite examination. Alternatively, the use of fluorescence microscopy for the detection of Cyclospora due to the organism's autofluorescent properties has been an available tool in the field of clinical parasitology. However, it is unknown how ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence performs compared to permanent sta

Evaluating Foodborne Cyclosporiasis Using Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network and Foodborne Disease Outbreak Surveillance System Data, 2015-2019.

Cyclosporiasis has been a nationally notifiable disease in the United States since 1999, and cases have increased in recent years. We evaluated characteristics of U.S. cases and outbreaks to identify gaps and potential prevention measures for mitigating cyclosporiasis. We assessed Cyclospora data from the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) and from the Foodborne Disease Outbreak Surveillance System (FDOSS) collected between 2015 and 2019. There were 1,376 cyclosporiasis cases in FoodNet between 2015 and 2019. Approximately one-fifth (n = 290, 21.1%) reported recent intern

First case report of Cyclosporiasis from eastern India: Incidence of Cyclospora cayetanensis in a patient with unusual diarrheal symptoms.

Cyclospora cayetanensis, a recently described coccidian parasite causes severe gastroenteric disease worldwide. Limited studies are found on the incidence of C. cayetanensis infection from India; hence remains largely unknown. To date, no case of cyclosporiasis from eastern India has been reported. In this study, we described an incidental case of C. cayetanensis in a 30 years old Bengali female patient with no travel history from eastern India. In June 2022, the patient presented with a history of diarrhoea persisting for more than two months with continuous passage foul smelling stools for w

Clinical and Epidemiologic Characteristics With Molecular Confirmation of Cyclosporiasis in Pediatric Patients Presenting to the Emergency Department With Acute Diarrheal Disease in Quindio, Colombia.

BACKGROUND: No analyses have explored the differential clinical characteristics of cyclosporiasis compared with other diarrheal etiologies. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of 118 children with diarrheal illnesses. Stool samples were analyzed using Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) staining and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the ssu rRNA gene. Positive PCR samples were sequenced to identify phylogroups (A, B and C). Quantitative variables were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test. Qualitative associations were analyzed using odds ratios (ORs) and Fisher exact or χ 2 tests. A parsimonio

[Cyclospora cayetanensis outbreak in travelers to Cuba].

Initially described in travelers, outbreaks of cyclosporiasis were soon linked to imported food products. An outbreak of cyclosporiasis in Spanish travelers is described. After identification of Cyclospora cayetanensis in stool analyses, a specific questionnaire was completed. Pyrosis was described in 57% of cases (4/7). Peptic symptoms can be a useful clue to indicate the diagnosis of cyclosporiasis in patients with travelers' diarrhea.

2013 multistate outbreaks of Cyclospora cayetanensis infections associated with fresh produce: focus on the Texas investigations.

The 2013 multistate outbreaks contributed to the largest annual number of reported US cases of cyclosporiasis since 1997. In this paper we focus on investigations in Texas. We defined an outbreak-associated case as laboratory-confirmed cyclosporiasis in a person with illness onset between 1 June and 31 August 2013, with no history of international travel in the previous 14 days. Epidemiological, environmental, and traceback investigations were conducted. Of the 631 cases reported in the multistate outbreaks, Texas reported the greatest number of cases, 270 (43%). More than 70 clusters were ide

Cyclospora Genotypic Variations and Associated Epidemiologic Characteristics, United States, 2018-2021.

Seasonal cyclosporiasis outbreaks occur in the United States every year. To better understand the disease, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed a novel genotyping system that successfully clusters nonclonal eukaryotes. We examined temporal-geographic distributions of Cyclospora cluster consensus genotypes (CCGs) and applied regression analyses to identify correlations between Cyclospora spp. parasites and clinical manifestations or epidemiologic risk factors, using data collected during 2018-2021. No CCG was uniquely associated with or consistently detected in a state durin

Intestinal protozoa in returning travellers: a GeoSentinel analysis from 2007 to 2019.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged diarrhoea is common amongst returning travellers and is often caused by intestinal protozoa. However, the epidemiology of travel-associated illness caused by protozoal pathogens is not well described. METHODS: We analysed records of returning international travellers with illness caused by Giardia duodenalis, Cryptosporidium spp., Cyclospora cayetanensis or Cystoisospora belli, reported to the GeoSentinel Network during January 2007-December 2019. We excluded records of travellers migrating, with an unascertainable exposure country, or from GeoSentinel sites that were no

Ten years of routine molecular detection of Cyclospora cayetanensis in northern Spain: diagnostic and epidemiological insights from a non-endemic setting.

Cyclospora cayetanensis is an emerging cause of prolonged diarrhoea that remains underdiagnosed in Europe because routine laboratory testing is uncommon and conventional diagnostic methods have limited sensitivity. We retrospectively reviewed laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis diagnosed following the implementation of routine multiplex GI PCR panel at a tertiary-care hospital in northern Spain between 2016 and 2025. Among 97,116 stool specimens screened, 52 infections were identified. Most patients had recently travelled to endemic regions, predominantly Mexico, whereas nine had no r

Epidemiology of Cyclospora cayetanensis infection in San Carlos Island, Venezuela: strong association between socio-economic status and infection.

The epidemiology of Cyclospora cayetanensis is not well understood. Few community-based studies have addressed this issue. A study was conducted to determine the prevalence and risk factors for cyclosporiasis in San Carlos Island, Venezuela. A sample of 515 subjects (mean+/-SD: 21.4+/-17.8 years) was surveyed. For identification of the parasite, stools were examined with modified Ziehl-Neelsen carbolfuchsin staining of formalin-ether concentrates. Infections with Cyclospora (43 of 515, 8.3%) were common. There were differences in prevalence of the parasite among sectors of the community: 30 ou

Genotyping genetically heterogeneous Cyclospora cayetanensis infections to complement epidemiological case linkage.

Sexually reproducing pathogens such as Cyclospora cayetanensis often produce genetically heterogeneous infections where the number of unique sequence types detected at any given locus varies depending on which locus is sequenced. The genotypes assigned to these infections quickly become complex when additional loci are analysed. This genetic heterogeneity confounds the utility of traditional sequence-typing and phylogenetic approaches for aiding epidemiological trace-back, and requires new methods to address this complexity. Here, we describe an ensemble of two similarity-based classification

[Laboratory diagnosis of intestinal protozoan opportunistic infections in Goiânia, GO].

Cryptosporidiosis, isosporiasis, cyclosporiasis and microsporídiosis have become common in immunocompromised patients. The diagnosis of these diseases is important, because although they produce similar clinical pictures, they have a different therapeutic approach and prognostic. Seeking to evaluate the situation of the diagnosis of these parasites, the laboratories of the SUS network and health centers of the district of Goiânia-GO were mapped.

The global prevalence of Cyclospora cayetanensis infection: A systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-regression.

Cyclospora cayetanensis (C. cayetanensis) is a significant pathogen that causes diarrheal illness and causes large foodborne diarrhea outbreaks in the USA and Canada. However, there is currently a lack of published meta-analysis on the prevalence of C. cayetanensis infection in the global population. A real estimation of a disease prevalence should always be done on the basis of studies designed for that purpose. We conducted a comprehensive search of various databases for articles pertaining to the prevalence of C. cayetanensis infection in humans, spanning from the inception of these databas
