Phragmites australis and Scirpus holoschoenus for metal(loid)s polluted groundwater remediation: a wetland mesocosm study with different exposure regimes.

Mitigation of pollutants is crucial for long-term sustainable management of groundwater and freshwater systems and ecosystem health. However, the potential of nature-based attenuation strategies, such as phytoremediation, in the presence of multi-element contamination and under changing exposure conditions, remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to comprehensively assess the potential of Phragmites australis and Scirpus holoschoenus for metal(loid) remediation in contaminated groundwater. The investigation involved both medium (4 L) static and large dynamic (65 L) mesocosms to simulate d

Metal distribution and stability in constructed wetland sediment.

The A-01 wetland treatment system (WTS) is a surface flow wetland planted with giant bulrush [Schoenoplectus californicus (C.A. Mey.) Palla] that is designed to remove Cu and other metals from the A-01 National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) effluent at the Savannah River Site near Aiken, SC. Copper, Zn, and Pb concentrations in water were usually reduced 60 to 80% by passage through the treatment system. The Cu concentrations in the wetland sediments increased from about 4 to 205 and 796 mg kg(-1), respectively, in the organic and floc sediment layers in cell 4A over a 5-yr pe

Multi-phase fate and removal mechanism of acetamiprid in a planted coastal wetland mesocosm system: A 'dual-engine' perspective.

Acetamiprid (ACE), a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide, poses persistent ecological risks to coastal ecosystems. However, its multi-media transformation pathways and the underlying biological drivers in coastal wetlands remain poorly understood. Here, using high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) based non-target screening integrated with Partial Least Squares Path Modeling (PLS-PM), we systematically investigated the ACE migration, biotransformation, and removal mechanisms in a mesocosm wetland system planted with three salt-tolerant hydrophytes: Phragmites australis (PA), Iris pseudacor

Experimental warming alleviates leaf-level physiological stress of Kobresia pygmaea in alpine meadows on the Northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

BACKGROUND: Climate warming can strongly influence alpine plant physiology, but the leaf-level responses of dominant alpine meadow species to warming may vary across elevation and growing-season stages. These spatial and seasonal patterns remain insufficiently known. RESULTS: We examined the physiological responses of Kobresia pygmaea on the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to long-term passive open-top chamber (OTC) warming across four elevations (3691, 3786, 3981, and 4131 m a.s.l.) from July to September. Across all sites and months, OTC warming increased mean near-surface air temperatur

Grass-like plants release general volatile cues attractive for gravid Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the ecology and behaviour of disease vectors, including the olfactory cues used to orient and select hosts and egg-laying sites, are essential for the development of novel, insecticide-free control tools. Selected graminoid plants have been shown to release volatile chemicals attracting malaria vectors; however, whether the attraction is selective to individual plants or more general across genera and families is still unclear. METHODS: To contribute to the current evidence, we implemented bioassays in two-port airflow olfactometers and in large field cages with four

Aerobiological fingerprint of a continental steppe in Anatolia: biphasic seasonal dynamics and atmospheric transport of herbaceous pollen.

High-altitude continental steppe ecosystems remain understudied with respect to biological air quality, limiting our understanding of pollen exposure dynamics in semi-arid regions. This study characterizes the aerobiological fingerprint of the Central Anatolian steppe (Yozgat, Türkiye) using 2 years (2018-2019) of volumetric pollen data. Arboreal (50.98%) and herbaceous (49.02%) pollen were nearly equivalent in overall contribution. Herbaceous taxa exhibited a distinct biphasic seasonal pattern: an early intense Gramineae peak in late spring exceeding environmental exposure thresholds, followe

Alum application to improve water quality in a municipal wastewater treatment wetland: effects on macrophyte growth and nutrient uptake.

Application of low doses of alum to treatment wetlands to reduce elevated outflow winter phosphorus concentrations were tested in mesocosms vegetated with either Typhadomingensis, Schoenoplectus californicus, or submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) (Najas guadalupensis-dominated). Alum was pumped to experimental units at a rate of 0.91 g Al m(-2) d(-1) and water quality monitored for 3 months. The alum application significantly improved the outflow water quality and overall the growth of the plants was unaffected by the alum application. Biomass and growth varied between species and through time

Phosphorus transformations during decomposition of wetland macrophytes.

The microbially mediated transformation of detrital P entering wetlands has important implications for the cycling and long-term sequestration of P in wetland soils. We investigated changes in P forms in sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense Crantz) and cattail (Typha domingensis Pers.) leaf litter during 15 months of decomposition at two sites of markedly different nutrient status within a hard-water subtropical wetland (Water Conservation Area 2A, Florida). Leaf litter decomposition at the nutrient enriched site resulted in net sequestration of P from the environment in forms characteristic of microb

Carextianlinensis and C. leigongshanica, Two New Species Related to C. perakensis from Southwest China, Based on Morphological and Molecular Evidence.

Two new species of Carex (Cyperaceae), C. tianlinensis and C. leigongshanica, are described and illustrated based on morphological and molecular evidence. Phylogenetic analyses based on two nuclear (ETS and ITS) and three plastid (matK, trnL-F, and rpl32-trnL(UAG)) DNA markers recovered C. tianlinensis and C. leigongshanica as two distinct, strongly supported monophyletic lineages within the Indica clade. The two new species form a well-supported sister pair that is in turn sister to C. perakensis. Morphologically, C. tianlinensis most closely resembles C. perakensis, but differs in having inf

Accumulation of As, Cd and selected trace elements in tubers of Scirpus maritimus L. from Doñana marshes (South Spain).

The collapse of a pyrite-mining, tailing dam on 1998 contaminated an area of 4286 ha along the Agrio and Guadiamar river valleys in southern Spain. Over 2700 ha of the Doñana marshes, an important wintering area for wetland European birds, were contaminated. This study reports analyses of the tubers of Scirpus maritimus (an important food for greylag geese, Anser anser) collected in 2000 in the "Entremuros" (spill-affected area) and in nearby unaffected Doñana marshes (control areas). In the spill-affected area mean tuber tissue concentrations of Cd (0.25 mg kg-1) and Zn (61 mg kg-1) were grea
