Immunocytochemical and ultrastructural identification of adenohypophyseal cells in Ctenopharyngodon idella (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae) during gonadal differentiation.

The adenohypophysis was studied by immunocytochemical and ultrastructural methods in juvenile grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) from natural reproduction in Northern Italian rivers. The adenohypophysis included the rostral pars distalis (RPD), the proximal pars distalis (PPD) and the pars intermedia (PI), all deeply penetrated by branches of the neurohypophysis (Nh). The prolactin (PRL), adrenocorticotropic (ACTH), somatotropic (GH), thyrotropic (TSH), gonadotropic type I (GtH I) and type II (GtH II), somatolactin (SL), melanotropic (MSH) and endorphin (END) cells were identified with antis

Biodiversity and five novel species of myxozoan parasites in Barbonymus spp. (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes) from Malaysia.

Up to this time, only five myxosporean species have been documented from fishes of the Barbonymus genus. Due to a limited number of myxozoan studies conducted in Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia, the diversity of this parasite group remains largely undiscovered. In this study, a comprehensive parasitology survey was conducted, revealing nine myxozoan parasites, including five different Myxobolus spp., three Thelohanellus sp. and one Myxidium sp. Using morphological and molecular data, we describe here five new species: Myxobolus gonionoti n. sp., found in the gill filaments; Myxobolus

Complete mitochondrial genome of Guigarracailaoensis Wang, Chen & Zheng, 2022 (Cypriniformes, Cyprinidae) and its phylogenetic implications.

Guigarracailaoensis is a member of family Cyprinidae, subfamily Labeoninae (Cypriniformes) which was recently discovered in southwestern China. Following its initial description, additional information on this species has remained notably scarce. In the current study, we assemble the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of G.cailaoensis using the Illumina sequencing platform. The mitogenome is identified as a circular, double-stranded DNA sequence of 16,593 base pairs, encompassing 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and a putative control regi

Mitochondrial genome data provide insights into the phylogenetic relationships within Triplophysadalaica (Kessler, 1876) (Cypriniformes, Nemacheilidae).

Due to the detrimental effect of formaldehyde on DNA, ethanol has replaced formalin as the primary preservative for animal specimens. However, short-term formalin fixation of specimens might be applied during field collection. In an increasing number of studies, DNA extraction and sequencing have been successfully conducted from formalin-fixed specimens. Here the DNA from five specimens of Triplophysadalaica (Kessler, 1876) were extracted and performed high-throughput sequencing. Four of the specimens underwent short-term fixation with formalin and were subsequently transferred to ethanol. One

Carolina Redhorse-a new species of Moxostoma (Cypriniformes: Catostomidae) from North Carolina and South Carolina, USA.

Recognized as an undescribed species since the mid-1990s, the Carolina Redhorse is herein described as Moxostoma carolinasp. nov. The Carolina Redhorse is distinguished from all other species described in the genus Moxostoma by the number of caudal peduncle scales, the texture and angle of the lower lip, and by pigmentation and tuberculation patterns. It is morphologically similar to M. erythrurum, although the two species are allopatric and phylogenetic analysis of the COI mitochondrial gene supports the Carolina Redhorse as a distinct evolutionary lineage. The Carolina Redhorse is rare, loca

Limited evidence for extensive genetic differentiation between X and Y chromosomes in Hybognathus amarus (Cypriniformes: Leuciscidae).

Sex determination systems and genetic sex differentiation across fishes are highly diverse but are unknown for most Cypriniformes, including Rio Grande silvery minnow (Hybognathus amarus). In this study, we aimed to detect and validate sex-linked markers to infer sex determination system and to demonstrate the utility of combining several methods for sex-linked marker detection in nonmodel organisms. To identify potential sex-linked markers, Nextera-tagmented reductively amplified DNA (nextRAD) libraries were generated from 66 females, 64 males, and 60 larvae of unknown sex. These data were co

Sensitivity of larval and juvenile fish with different swim bladder morphology to barotrauma with a special focus on Cypriniformes.

Barotrauma, caused by rapid pressure changes, poses a major risk to fish migrating downstream through hydropower turbines. This study investigated the sensitivity of larval and juvenile fish to barotrauma with different swim bladder morphology to barotrauma using a custom-built chamber. Four different representative species, namely the two cypriniform species common nase (Chondrostoma nasus) and roach (Rutilus rutilus), both physostomous species with a two-chambered swim bladder, European grayling (Thymallus thymallus) as physostomous species with a single-chambered swim bladder and European p

Normal stages of embryonic development of a brood parasite, the rosy bitterling Rhodeus ocellatus (Teleostei: Cypriniformes).

Bitterlings, a group of freshwater teleosts, provide a fascinating example among vertebrates of the evolution of brood parasitism. Their eggs are laid inside the gill chamber of their freshwater mussel hosts where they develop as brood parasites. Studies of the embryonic development of bitterlings are crucial in deciphering the evolution of their distinct early life-history. Here, we have studied 255 embryos and larvae of the rosy bitterling (Rhodeus ocellatus) using in vitro fertilization and X-ray microtomography (microCT). We describe 11 pre-hatching and 13 post-hatching developmental stage

Mycobacterium gordonae (Actinomycetota: Mycobacteriales: Mycobacteriaceae) Infecting Captive-Reared Laurel Dace, Chrosomus saylori (Cypriniformes: Leuciscidae) in North America.

A captive-reared cohort of Laurel Dace, Chrosomus saylori (Skelton 2001) (Cypriniformes: Leuciscidae), a federally-endangered species endemic to several streams in eastern Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau, exhibited signs of morbidity and trickling mortalities in a recirculating aquaculture system. Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) staining revealed acid-fast rod-shaped bacteria within necrotic and intracellular lesions affecting the eye, swim bladder, spleen, and ovary. Histopathology showed granulomatous inflammation characterised by macrophages, multinucleated giant cells, and eosinophilic exudates. The eye

Description of a New Eyeless Cavefish Using Integrative Taxonomic Methods-Sinocyclocheilus wanlanensis (Cypriniformes, Cyprinidae), from Guizhou, China.

China's southwestern karst landscapes support remarkable cavefish diversity, especially within Sinocyclocheilus, the world's largest cavefish genus. Using integrative taxonomic methods, we describe Sinocyclocheilus wanlanensis sp. nov., found in a subterranean river in Guizhou Province. This species lacks horn-like cranial structures; its eyes are either reduced to a dark spot or absent. It possesses a pronounced nuchal hump and a forward-protruding, duckbill-shaped head. Morphometric analysis of 28 individuals from six species shows clear separation from related taxa. Nano-CT imaging reveals

Formosaniaimmaculata, a new species of hillstream loach (Teleostei, Cypriniformes, Gastromyzontidae) from the Ou-Jiang River, Southeast China.

The obligate intracellular bacterium Chlamydia alternates between two functional forms during its developmental cycle: elementary body (EB) and reticulate body (RB). However, the molecular mechanisms governing the transitions between these forms are unknown. Here, we present evidence that cyclic di-AMP (c-di-AMP) is a key factor in triggering the transition from RB to EB (i.e., secondary differentiation) in the chlamydial developmental cycle. By overexpressing or knocking down expression of c-di-AMP synthase genes, we made strains producing different levels of c-di-AMP, which we linked to chan

Morphological and molecular characterization of myxobolids (Cnidaria, Myxozoa) infecting cypriniforms (Actinopterygii, Teleostei) endemic to the Iberian Peninsula.

The Iberian Peninsula provides a unique freshwater ecosystem for native and endemic cypriniforms to thrive. Despite cypriniforms being hosts to multiple myxobolids worldwide, little research has been performed in this geographic location. In this study, the examination of three Iberian endemic cypriniforms showed that myxosporean richness in the Iberian Peninsula is underestimated, with three new and one known myxobolid species being reported based on morphological and molecular data (SSU). Myxobolus arcasii n. sp. is described from the kidney and gonads of the "bermejuela" Achondrostoma arcas

Types matter: taxonomic status of Chanodichthys oxycephalus (Bleeker, 1871) (Cypriniformes, Xenocyprididae) and some relevant species of East Asia.

Issues concerning the identification of Chanodichthys oxycephalus are addressed. This species is a senior synonym of Ch. oxycephaloides and is restricted to the Chang-Jiang basin and adjacent lakes. Specimens previously identified as Ch. oxycephalus, represent misidentifications of either Ch. abramoides or Ch. dabryi. Chanodichthys oxycephalus, Ch. abramoides, and Ch. dabryi are confirmed as three distinct species. Chanodichthys dabryi shinkainensis is treated as a junior synonym of Ch. abramoides. Revalidation of Enteromius karkensis (Gilchrist and Thompson 1913) (Cypriniformes: Smiliogastrinae) from the southern temperate freshwater ecoregion, South Africa.

The chubbyhead barbs, a distinct group of fishes endemic to southern Africa, currently include eight valid species. Historically, Enteromius anoplus was the most widespread freshwater fish in South Africa due to synonymizations in the 1960s. It occurred in nearly every river system except coastal systems in the Cape Fold Ecoregion and the lower Orange River. However, a recent revision utilizing molecular and morphological analyses has led to significant taxonomic updates. Enteromius anoplus is restricted to the Gouritz River system, whereas Enteromius cernuus and Enteromius oraniensis have bee

Claea tongziensis sp. nov., a new species of Claea (Teleostei, Cypriniformes, Nemacheilidae) from the upper Yangtze River drainage, China.

AIMS: Severe reduction in nephron numbers that are characteristic of renal hypodysplasia (RHD) are one of the cause of childhood chronic kidney disease (CKD). Glomerular hyperfiltration, glomerular hypertrophy, progressive glomerular scarring, and interstitial fibrosis due to reduced nephron number are risk factors for CKD. In recent years, studies on specific markers for early diagnosis of renal failure and mortality have been carried out. The objectives of this study were to identify serum and urinary endocan levels that are expressed in glomerular endothelial cells and tubular epithelial ce
