A new species, Nothobranchius sylvaticus sp. nov. is described from ephemeral swamps in open areas of the Gongoni Forest in the seasonal Mkurumudzi system in south-eastern coastal Kenya. The species occupies a unique ecological niche as it inhabits small seasonal wetland habitats situated in a relict forest ecosystem. Nothobranchius sylvaticus sp. nov. is distinguished from all other members of the genus by: iridescent light blue scales on its trunk extending to cover the entire caudal peduncle; dorsal portion of head grey with distinct red lobes along the supraorbital canal; posterior scale m

An integrative taxonomy approach is used to characterise the diversity of gorgoderid trematodes that parasitize freshwater fishes of the subfamily Goodeinae in central Mexico. Records of Phyllodistomum sp. and Dendrorchis sp. from the urinary bladder of goodeines have been previously published, although the identification at species level was not achieved. A few specimens were collected and fixed to conduct a scanning electron microscopy study, and to obtain sequences of a mitochondrial (COI) and nuclear (28S rRNA) gene, to be analysed in the context of the molecular phylogeny of gorgoderid tr

Variable platyfish, Xiphophorus variatus (Meek, 1904) (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) and eastern mosquitofish, Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859 (Poeciliidae) from earthen ponds in west central Florida were examined for parasitic infections. At necropsy, we observed myriad nematodes (adults and eggs), which we identified as Huffmanela cf. huffmani, infecting the swim bladder, gonad, and visceral peritoneum. Nucleotide sequences (small subunit ribosomal DNA, 18S) of H. cf. huffmani from variable platyfish and eastern mosquitofish were identical; likewise for newly obtained 18S sequences of Huf

BACKGROUND: Goodeid topminnows are live-bearing fishes endemic to the Mexican Highlands (Mesa Central, MC). Unfortunately, in the MC, environmental degradation and introduced species have pushed several goodeid species to the brink of extinction. Invasive fishes can introduce exotic parasites, and the most abundant goodeid, blackfin goodea Goodea atripinnis Jordan, is parasitised by six exotic helminths. Poeciliids are widely dispersed invasive fishes, which exert negative ecological effects on goodeids. Poeciliids host several species of the monogenean genus Gyrodactylus von Nordmann, 1832, i

An incidence of scale-stacking was found in a museum collection of Belonesox belizanus (Poeciliidae) from the Río Tesechocán, Veracruz, México. This phenomenon is thought to be unique to lepidophagous East African cichlids, although no studies have addressed the behaviour in any detail. This finding in B. belizanus, the first in Cyprinodontiformes, indicates Belonesox is able to manipulate scales into stacks in the buccal cavity.

In biogeography, vicariance and long-distance dispersal are often characterised as competing scenarios. However, they are related concepts, both relying on collective geological, ecological, and phylogenetic evidence. This is illustrated by freshwater fishes, which may immigrate to islands either when freshwater connections are temporarily present and later severed (vicariance), or by unusual means when ocean gaps are crossed (long-distance dispersal). Marine barriers have a strong filtering effect on freshwater fishes, limiting immigrants to those most capable of oceanic dispersal. The roles

A major challenge for aquatic vertebrates that invade land is feeding in the terrestrial realm. The capacity of the gape to become parallel with the ground has been shown to be a key factor to allow fishes to feed on prey lying on a terrestrial surface. To do so, two strategies have been identified that involve a nose-down tilting of the head: (1) by pivoting on the pectoral fins as observed in mudskippers, and (2) curling of the anterior part of the body supported by a long and flexible eel-like body as shown in eel-catfish. Although Anableps anableps successfully feeds on land, it does not p

We characterized monopisthocotylans infecting endemic goodeid fishes south of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB), a major North American barrier separating the Nearctic and Neotropical biogeographic provinces. Considering that TMVB emergence powerfully influenced goodeid diversification and distribution, we assessed whether it also affected Gyrodactylus lineages associated with these Nearctic hosts. Previously, six Gyrodactylus spp. were known to infect goodeids (Goodea atripinnis, Giradinichthys multiradiatus) within and north of the TMVB; we recorded seven gyrodactylids (three known, fou

Understanding the factors affecting the capacity of ectothermic fishes to cope with warming temperature is critical given predicted climate change scenarios. We know that a fish's social environment introduces plasticity in how it responds to high temperature. However, the magnitude of this plasticity and the mechanisms underlying socially modulated thermal responses are unknown. Using the amphibious hermaphroditic mangrove rivulus fish Kryptolebias marmoratus as a model, we tested three hypotheses: (1) social stimulation affects physiological and behavioural thermal responses of isogenic line

This paper provides the first report of the invasive Asian fish tapeworm, Bothriocephalus acheilognathi Yamaguti, 1934, in Honduras. The cestode was found in Profundulus portillorum (Cyprinodontiformes: Profundulidae), which represents a new host record, and which is a member of a genus faced with a variety of conservation challenges, now potentially complicated by the presence of this pathogenic cestode. Nearly complete sequence data from the ITS-1 5.8S and ITS-2 regions corroborate the determination based on morphological characteristics. Several species of carp were introduced to Honduras f

In our study, fancy southern platyfish Xiphophorus maculatus (Cyprinodontiformes, Poeciliidae) were examined due to breathing disorders and mortality. Fish came from Vietnam farm and were redistributed by international wholesaler. In fish, loss of appetite and gasping near the water surface was observed. Gill tissue showed small white spots, caused by metacercariae and areas of clearing surrounding the cysts. Primary branchial filaments were hyperplastic, necrotic, significantly deformed and shortened. Samples were fixed in 98% alcohol for molecular analyses. The identity of C. formosanus (Opi

Studies of sex chromosome systems at early stages of divergence are key to understanding the initial process and underlying causes of recombination suppression. However, identifying signatures of divergence in homomorphic sex chromosomes can be challenging due to high levels of sequence similarity between the X and the Y. Variations in methodological precision and underlying data can make all the difference between detecting subtle divergence patterns or missing them entirely. Recent efforts to test for X-Y sequence differentiation in the guppy have led to contradictory results. Here, we apply

Strigeid trematodes of the genus Apatemon Szidat, 1928 are intestinal parasites of fish-eating birds, utilizing various fish species as second intermediate hosts. In this study, we report morphometrical and molecular characterization of Apatemon sp. metacercariae parasitizing killifish Nothobranchius furzeri (Cyprinodontiformes: Nothobranchiidae) in south-east Mozambique. Metacercariae obtained from the cerebral cavity of killifish and two adult individuals isolated from experimentally infected ducklings were used for detailed morphological and molecular description, both resulting in generic

Multiple lineages in the family Poeciliidae have independently adapted to hydrogen-sulfide-rich springs. The independent colonizations of such springs mean that there are naturally replicated lineages that provide a powerful model for studying adaptation and convergent evolution. However, there are limited genomic resources for many genera and species across Poeciliidae. Here, we present six high-quality, chromosome-level, annotated genome assemblies for Poecilia and Gambusia populations, five of which are the first for the species or ecotype, and the remaining assembly improved the current re

Gambusia holbrooki is one of the world's most environmentally damaging introduced species, being notoriously difficult to control once established. A composite double-winged fyke net comprising four vertically stacked compartments was developed to determine the potential to control G. holbrooki, while reducing negative interactions of this aggressive species with small threatened fishes. The stacked fyke net captured three times as many G. holbrooki as a conventional fyke net while maintaining consistent catches of native fishes relative to that from a conventional fyke net, and detected speci

Blood withdrawal is a common procedure performed on laboratory animals to monitor key processes and indicators of fish health and physiology, such as hematopoiesis, hemostasis, and lipid and glucose metabolism. Moreover, the ability to extract blood with minimal invasiveness and without sacrificing animals enables repeated sampling, allowing both longitudinal studies of individual animals, as well as reducing the number of experimental animals needed in a study. The African turquoise killifish is an emerging animal model that is progressively being adopted worldwide for aging studies because o

Senescence is age-related decline that may carry over to subsequent generations. Advanced parental age can both improve or reduce offspring fitness, however. Identification of mechanisms of parental effects senescence thus proved challenging so far. We investigated the effects of old parental age on offspring performance in a laboratory short-lived fish, Nothobranchius furzeri (Cyprinodontiformes). We followed age-related changes in parents and then focused on the effect of parental age on key offspring life-history traits (embryonic survival, hatching rate and juvenile growth). We employed te

Kryptolebias marmoratus (Kmar), a teleost fish of the order Cyprinodontiformes, has a suite of unique phenotypes and behaviors not observed in other fishes. Many of these phenotypes are discrete and highly plastic-varying over time within an individual, and in some cases reversible. Kmar and its interfertile sister species, K. hermaphroditus, are the only known self-fertile vertebrates. This unusual sexual mode has the potential to provide unique insights into the regulation of vertebrate sexual development, and also lends itself to genetics. Kmar is easily adapted to the lab and requires litt

Gestodene (GES) is a common synthetic progesterone frequently detected in aquatic environments. Chronic exposure to GES can cause masculinization of a variety of fish; however, whether metabolism is closely related to the masculinization has yet to be explored. Hence, the ovary metabolome of adult female western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) after exposing to GES (0.0, 5.0, 50.0, and 500.0 ng/L) for 40 days was analyzed by using high-performance liquid chromatography ionization with quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-QTOF-MS). The results showed that GES increased the l
