Radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) is an unpleasant and sometimes life-threatening complication confronted while treating pelvic malignancies. A wide array of treatment modalities such as bladder irrigation, fulguration, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and surgical methods has been proposed to treat hematuria, but there is no consensus on the optimal therapeutic strategy for the same. Reported here is a successful superselective embolization of the bilateral vesical arteries in a patient with refractory radiation-induced HC. This technique proved to be effective in controlling intractable

A healthy 33-year-old woman consumed a slimming product containing a mixture of herbal remedies without seeking medical advice. Two months later, the patient had hemorrhagic cystitis and discontinued the herbal product. Symptoms spontaneously remitted in a few days. Four months later, she took the same herbal remedy and the hemorrhagic cystitis reappeared. She then consulted her general practitioner. A urine culture test was negative, and the patient was advised to discontinue the herb intake. Again, the cystitis resolved within a week. The product involved contains a mixture of herbs, some of

Severe hemorrhagic cystitis often arises from anticancer chemotherapy or radiotherapy for pelvic malignancies. Infectious etiologies are less common causes except in immunocompromised hosts. These cases can be challenging problems for the urologist and a source of substantial morbidity and sometimes mortality for the patients. A variety of modalities of treatment have been described for the management of hemorrhagic cystitis but there is none that is uniformly effective. Some progress has been made in the understanding and management of viral hemorrhagic cystitis. This article reviews the comm

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Hemorrhagic cystitis after radiotherapy is a relatively rare event, usually occurring several years after radiation treatment. It can be relentlessly progressive, and treatment options are usually suboptimal. No management strategy is fully successful, and a stepwise progression in treatment intensity is often necessary with cystectomy and urinary diversion being the final management option.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Laparoscopic cystoprostatectomy with minilaparotomy ileal conduit urinary diversion was successfully performed in three patients with severe refractory hemorr

Irritable urological symptoms with gross hematuria and bilateral lumbar pain developed when the patient received penicillin G for endocarditis. These symptoms were followed by renal insufficiency. A contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a thickened bladder wall, bilateral hydroureter and hydronephrosis, suggesting hemorrhagic cystitis complicated with urinary tract obstruction. Urine culture was negative. After discontinuation of penicillin G, all symptoms subsided and renal function recovered; hence, penicillin G seems to have been associated with hemorrhagic cyst

Severe hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) may be a life-threatening complication in allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT). In order to improve the strategies for prophylaxis and treatment, we retrospectively analyzed data on patients who underwent SCT at our center from 1990 through 2005. Patients with HC were identified through our database and their medical charts were reviewed. Grades 2-5 and 3-5 HC developed in 109/834 patients (13.1%) and 27/834 patients (3.2%), respectively. The frequency of HC decreased over the time from 18.0% in 1990-1992 to 9.5% in 2002-2005 (p = 0.005). HC started on a

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the possible protective effect of recombinant human interleukin-11 (rhIL-11) against ifosfamide (IFS)-induced hemorrhagic cystitis (HC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male Swiss mice (20-30g) were pretreated with rhIL-11 (25-625 mg, subcutaneously.) 30 min before intraperitoneal injection of IFS (400 mg/kg) or with saline (control group). Twelve hours later, HC was evaluated by bladder wet weight (BWW) to quantify edema, Evans blue extravasation (EBE) to measure vascular permeability, and macroscopic and microscopic analysis. All bladders were assessed by histopathological

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Polyoma virus-associated haemorrhagic cystitis (PVA-HC) is a painful and high-morbidity complication after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HCT). It is characterized by haematuria caused by bladder inflammation and high BK-virus replication. Its incidence is changing due to expanding donor sources, including haploidentical grafts. It is difficult for clinicians to know how to treat PVA-HC, and there is limited evidence. Given evolving transplant protocols and the absence of standardized treatments, this review will examine the literature regarding int

Cyclophosphamide (CYP) is extensively used in tumor therapy, but its clinical application is limited by its toxic effects on the bladder. Since CYP-induced cystitis is believed to be mediated by acrolein (ACR), a product of lipid peroxidation that triggers ferroptosis, we hypothesized that ferroptosis might be an essential molecular mechanism underlying CYP-induced cystitis. The purpose of this study was to test this hypothesis. Intraperitoneal injection of CYP led to bladder hemorrhage and edema, along with increased oxidation, inflammation, and cell injury. Further analysis revealed these ch

Radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis is a late-onset complication of radiation therapy of the pelvis with an incidence rate of approximately 5-10%. The severity of hematuria can vary from mild hematuria to more severe bleeding with clot formation and urinary retention to intractable life-threatening bleeding when blood transfusions fail to keep pace with blood loss. Management of radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis is based on the presenting symptoms after ruling out urinary tract infection or a tumor. In cases with mild or moderate gross hematuria, hydration can be sufficient to prevent

OBJECTIVE: Hemorrhagic cystitis is a challenging clinical entity with limited evidence available to guide treatment. The use of intravesical silver nitrate has been reported, though supporting literature is sparse. Here, we sought to assess outcomes of patients treated with intravesical silver nitrate for refractory hemorrhagic cystitis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We identified nine patients with refractory hemorrhagic cystitis treated at our institution with intravesical silver nitrate between 2000-2015. All patients had failed previous continuous bladder irrigation with normal saline and clot ev

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhagic radiation cystitis (HRC) is a significant clinical problem that occurs after pelvic radiation therapy and is often refractory.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) for HRC.
METHODS: Daily 90 minute sessions of HBO at 2 ATM 100% oxygen were given to 32 HRC patients with ASTRO grades 3-4 hematuria.
RESULTS: The median age was 72.5 (48-88 years). The median time interval between radiation therapy and HBO was 4 years (1-26 years). The patients received a median of 30 HBO sessions (3-53). Hematuria resolved in 27 patients (84%

An 8 yr old castrated male Labrador retriever mixed-breed dog with osteosarcoma (OSA) of the left proximal humerus receiving carboplatin presented 10 days after the third chemotherapy treatment with hematuria, stranguria, and pollakiuria. A presumptive diagnosis of hemorrhagic cystitis was made based on clinical signs, urinalysis, and cytologic analysis of a traumatic catheterization sample. Carboplatin was removed from the chemotherapy treatment plan and was substituted with doxorubicin. The dog was treated with meloxicam for pain, and the cystitis signs subsided over a period of 4 wk. Carbop

BACKGROUND: Ataxia telangiectasia (AT) is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder caused by variants in the ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM) gene. AT is characterized by progressive cerebellar degeneration, telangiectasia, immunodeficiency, cancer susceptibility, and radiosensitivity. This report presents a case of classic AT complicated by severe hemorrhagic cystitis, a rare clinical manifestation. Genetic analysis revealed novel variants in the ATM gene.

INTRODUCTION: Hemorrhagic cystitis presents a difficult clinical challenge, yet data regarding treatment options is sparse. Here, we sought to evaluate outcomes of a contemporary cohort of patients treated with intravesical formalin for hemorrhagic cystitis.
METHODS: We identified a retrospective cohort of eight patients managed with formalin for hemorrhagic cystitis from 2000-2014. All patients failed prior measures, including bladder irrigation, clot evacuation, and other intravesical agents. Treatment success was defined as hematuria resolution during the given hospitalization without use

As diagnosis and treatment of cancer is improving, medical and social issues related to cancer survivorship are becoming more prevalent. Hemorrhagic cystitis (HC), a rare but serious disease that may affect patients after pelvic radiation or systemic chemotherapy, has significant unmet medical needs. Although no definitive treatment is currently available, various interventions are employed for HC. Effects of nonsurgical treatments for HC are of modest success and studies aiming to control radiation-induced bladder symptoms are lacking. In this review, we present current and advanced therapeut

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections are mostly seen in immunocompromised patients. However, unusual manifestations or complications of acquired CMV infections in immunocompetent patients are rarely reported. CMV-related hemorrhagic cystitis is extremely rare but should be considered even in immunocompetent patients. We present a case of a 3-year-old immunocompetent boy with intermittent, terminal gross hematuria lasting for 1 month. There was no history of genitourinary trauma or stone disease. Urine analysis revealed hematuria with eumorphic red blood cells and no proteinuria. Urine culture was
