A multicenter study of vesicovaginal fistula following incidental cystotomy during benign hysterectomies.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: To evaluate factors for vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) formation following incidental cystotomies during benign hysterectomies. METHODS: Hysterectomies performed at two university centers between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2008 were reviewed. Demographic and operative data were abstracted. Patients who developed VVF were compared to those with no VVF. RESULTS: During the study period, 5,698 hysterectomies performed for benign indications were identified. One hundred two (1.8%) cystotomies occurred with 6 (5.9%) developing a VVF. Patients with VVF were more lik

Outcome of tension-free vaginal tape procedure when complicated by intraoperative cystotomy.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine risk factors for intra-operative cystotomy during TVT and whether this affects surgical outcome and morbidity. STUDY DESIGN: Charts of 340 women who underwent TVT were reviewed. Those who had a cystotomy during the procedure (cases) were compared with those without (controls) for the variables: age, race, parity, body mass index (BMI), TVT with or without other procedures, previous pelvic surgery, blood loss, length of catheter drainage, UTI, and voiding dysfunction. The t-test and chi-squared test were used and differences resulting in

Comparison of Laparoscopic and Conventional Cystotomy/Partial Cystectomy in Treatment of Liver Hydatidosis.

INTRODUCTION: Hydatidosis is a zoonotic infection and treatment is mandatory to avoid complications. Surgery remains the first choice in the treatment especially for CE2-CE3b cysts. Open or laparoscopic approaches are available. However, comparative studies are limited. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data of patients who underwent cystotomy/partial cystectomy for liver hydatidosis between January 2012 and September 2016 (n=77) were evaluated retrospectively. Recurrent cases and the patients with previous hepatobiliary surgery were excluded. 23 patients were operated upon laparoscopically and named as

[Laparoscopic repair of vesico-vaginal fistula without intentional cystotomy and guided by vaginal transillumination].

OBJECTIVES: Repair of vesico-vaginal fistula (VVF) by laparoscopy provides excellent exposure, which facilitates their implementation through small cystotomy. In some cases is difficult to locate the fistula without the prior opening of the bladder. We present a maneuver using vaginal transillumination to locate the fistula and to reduce the size of the opening bladder during laparoscopic repair without intentional cystotomy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 4 patients with supra-trigonal FVV produced post-hysterectomy received laparoscopic repair. All patients underwent physical examination,

Transpupillary Nd:YAG laser cystotomy for iris pigment epithelial cysts with secondary progressive angle closure.

Two patients were diagnosed as having unilateral iris pigment epithelial (IPE) cysts that were documented to enlarge and induce angle closure. Transpupillary IPE cystotomies were performed using the Nd:YAG laser as a prophylactic measure to prevent angle-closure glaucoma. Anterior chamber anatomy and cyst dimensions were assessed before, during, and after long-term follow-up using slit-lamp biomicroscopy, gonioscopy, and 20- or 35-MHz high-frequency ultrasound imaging. Cystotomy resulted in immediate, visible deflation of both IPE cysts with subsequent resolution of angle closure. The cyst con

Design, fabrication, and evaluation of 3-D-printed cystotomy spoons as a retrieval method in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: Current cystotomy methods often implement the use of off-label devices, resulting in urocystolith extraction difficulty and potentially leading to postoperative complications and discomfort for the patient. The objective of this study was to create 3 novel 3-D printed cystotomy spoons that offer a dedicated solution for removing urocystoliths from a patient's urinary bladder. ANIMALS: Clinical use of the 3 novel 3-D printed cystotomy spoons were ultimately evaluated in 4 dogs and 1 cat that presented for urocystotlith removal at 3 different veterinary hospitals in northwest Arkansa

Expectant management of cystotomy at the time of midurethral sling placement: a retrospective case series.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Cystotomy is one of the most common complications of retropubic midurethral sling placement. Some centers manage cystotomy with prolonged catheter drainage, and there are few published studies evaluating this practice. The purpose of this study is to review postoperative outcomes of patients who experienced cystotomy at the time of sling placement and did not undergo prolonged catheter drainage. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of all patients undergoing midurethral sling placement complicated by a cystotomy at the University of Rochester between 2004 and 2

Limited anterior cystotomy: a useful alternative to the vaginal approach for vesicovaginal fistula repair.

In developed nations, vesicovaginal fistulas are most commonly encountered as a complication after gynecologic surgery. Most fistulas are corrected using a transvaginal approach; however, complicated cases often require intraabdominal repair. A novel abdominal approach is described, using a small anterior cystotomy and omental pedicle interposition.

Biological welding enables rapid and efficient bladder cystotomy closure and reveals the underlying repair mechanism.

Bladder rupture repair surgery is limited by its long duration, significant blood loss, and complex procedures. Biological welding technology, which integrates multiple functions such as cutting, hemostasis, and tissue fusion, has shown potential in the field of soft tissue repair surgery but has not yet been widely explored in clinical applications for bladder rupture repair. This study used 32 adult male Beagle dogs to establish a bladder rupture model, randomly assigned to the biological welding group or the traditional suturing group. Outcomes assessed included surgical time, blood loss, p

Vesicovaginal fistula repair without intentional cystotomy using the laparoscopic robotic approach: a case report.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Fistulas inaccessible from the vagina may require abdominal repair; we sought to evaluate the robotic-assisted laparoscopic approach for this procedure. METHODS: A 41-year-old nulliparous woman presented with urinary incontinence following an abdominal hysterectomy, and office evaluation identified a vesicovaginal fistula. After discussion with the patient regarding the surgical options, the robotic approach was chosen to facilitate precise dissection, fine visualization, and suturing. A stent was placed from the bladder into the vagina, and no intentional cystotomy

Prevention of vesicovaginal fistulas after laparoscopic hysterectomy with electrosurgical cystotomy in female mongrel dogs.

OBJECTIVE: Using a previously described animal model, we sought to compare 3 methods of double-layer cystotomy repair to each other and to single-layer repair in the prevention of vesicovaginal fistula formation. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-four female mongrels, which were divided into 3 groups, underwent laparoscopic hysterectomy followed by monopolar electrosurgical cystotomy. Group 1 had simple 2-layer cystotomy repair with interrupted 2-0 polyglactin sutures; group 2 had resection of tissue 5 mm beyond the visible electrosurgical burn margin followed by 2-layer closure, and group 3 had interposi

A trial placement of a prophylactic ureteral catheter during the excision of a huge pelvic mass with incidental cystotomy.

Ureteral injuries are one of the major complications following gynecologic surgeries. They are serious, troublesome, often associated with significant morbidity, and are one of the most common causes for legal action against gynecologic surgeons. The reported rates of injury depend on the vigilance of diagnosis, type of surgery and other risk factors. We present a case of a 48 year old obese Caucasian female with no significant past medical history who came in with back pain and progressive abdominal swelling for the past three months and was found to have a very large pelvic mass. After preop

Popliteal artery occlusion caused by cystic adventitial disease: successful treatment by urokinase followed by nonresectional cystotomy.

Preoperative diagnosis of an occluded popliteal artery caused by cystic adventitial disease allowed use of urokinase to successfully dissolve secondary thrombosis. Subsequent non-resectional adventitial cystotomy and evacuation of cyst contents allowed lasting restoration of a patent arterial lumen and return of normal distal pulses. This nongrafting technique may serve as a model for future patients with occluded arteries caused by this condition.
