Aedes aegypti is a primary vector of arboviral diseases, including chikungunya, dengue fever, yellow fever, and Zika virus. Given the increasing global burden and the limitations of synthetic repellents, there is a growing need for safe and effective botanical alternatives, especially in endemic regions. This study formulated thymol-, carvacrol-, and cinnamaldehyde-loaded nanoemulsions via spontaneous emulsification and subsequently gelled using hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC). Viscosity and encapsulation efficiency were assessed using viscometry and Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier Tr

Blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say (Arachnida: Ixodidae), is a growing health concern for humans as vectors the causative agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi, and many other pathogens. Given the potential health threat I. scapularis entails, and the need to find effective strategies to prevent tick bites, it is pivotal to understand the chemosensory system of ticks and their host-seeking behaviour when exposed to repellents. In this study, we investigated whether the exposure to synthetic and plant-derived repellents impairs the ability of I. scapularis to detect attractants and h

(1) Respiratory distress and seizures developed in an 18-month-old boy following brief exposure to low-strength (17.6%) N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET). A review of the literature revealed 17 reports of DEET-induced encephalopathy in children. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that the potential toxicity of DEET is high and that available repellents containing DEET, irrespective of their strength, are not safe when applied to children's skin. (2) Although this is a case report, we used the features of published reports of DEET-induced encephalopathy in children to support t

DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide) is one of the reliable and most widely used insect repellents. This work was planned to study the effect of DEET on Schistosoma mansoni cercariae viability (in vitro) and skin penetration and migration (in vivo). DEET concentrations of 30%, 15% and 7.5% were highly efficient in killing all cercariae in vitro within 30, 60 and 240 minutes respectively. Two concentrations of DEET (15%) and (7.5%) were tested separately for their antipenetrant and protective effects in mice by immersing their tails in the drug and then exposed to cercariae, 30 minutes later. DEET a

The malaria vector Anopheles arabiensis Patton (Diptera: Culicidae) shows a marked predilection (> 80%) for biting the ankles and feet of human subjects, as revealed by our previous observations at Malahlapanga in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Topical application of insect repellent, 15% deet (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide), to feet and ankles reduced the overall biting rate of An. arabiensis by 69%. A focal malaria epidemic in Albertsnek village (25 degrees 33'S, 31 degrees 59' E) near the Mozambique border, following flooding during February 2000, provided an opportunity to apply t

Mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue fever, chikungunya, and Zika, continue to pose a substantial global public health challenge. This is largely attributable to the absence of effective vaccines and the expanding distribution of vectors such as Aedes albopictus (Ae. albopictus). Repellents, therefore, remain a critical component of prevention strategies for disease prevention. However, existing formulations have notable limitations. Synthetic repellents such as DEET provide broad-spectrum efficacy but may raise safety concerns, especially at high concentrations. In contrast, botanical re

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a multi-symptom illness having at least one symptom from two of three factors, which include: fatigue, mood-cognition problems, and musculoskeletal disorders. The cluster of long-term symptoms is unique to military personnel from coalition countries including United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom that served in Operation Desert Storm from 1990 to 1991. Reporting of these symptoms is much lower among soldiers deployed in other parts of the world like Bosnia during the same time period. The ex

Three gustatory receptor neurons were characterized for contact chemoreceptive sensilla on the labella of female yellow-fever mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti. The neuron with the smallest amplitude spike responded to the feeding deterrent, quinine, as well as N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide and other insect repellents. Two other neurons with differing spikes responded to salt (NaCl) and sucrose. This is the first report of a gustatory receptor neuron specific for insect repellents in mosquitoes and may provide a tool for screening chemicals to discover novel or improved feeding deterrents and repellen

OBJECTIVE: Malaria is a vector-borne disease that causes many deaths worldwide; repellents are a practical approach to malaria prevention, especially in endemic regions.
RESULTS: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis was used to identify compounds in Acroptilon repens essential oil (EO). Alpha-copaene (15.67%), α-cubenen (3.76%), caryophyllene oxide (14.00%), 1-heptadecane (5.61%), and δ-cadinene (2.84) were five major compounds. After that, the nanoemulsion containing the EO with a particle size of 46 ± 4 nm, SPAN 0.85, PDI 0.4, and zeta potential - 5.7 ± 0.4 mV was prepared. Then, i

The efficacy of the repellent IR3535 was tested and compared with DEET using two laboratory colonies of phlebotomine sand flies, Phlebotomus mascittii and Phlebotomus duboscqi. P. duboscqi, originating from Senegal, is a proven vector of Leishmania major. P. mascittii (Corsican origin) has never been demonstrated to be a vector of leishmaniasis, but it was reported in 2004 as an anthropophilic species in Germany associated with autochthonous visceral leishmaniasis in people and animals. IR3535 and DEET were tested at an effective concentration of 10% in ethanol on two (one male, one female) hu

A decrease in host-seeking activity in female Aedes albopictus was observed after exposure to a human hand tested in an olfactometer in the laboratory. The increased treatment times resulted in a decreasing response to a human hand. Fatigued/exhausted female mosquitoes after multiple host-seeking activities did prolong the blood engorgement time, compared with untreated nonfatigued mosquitoes. Also, fatigued mosquitoes showed a significant reduction in human host-attacking rates. The mean duration of protection from mosquito bites of human hand treated with 25% deet (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzam

Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato and Amblyomma sculptum can parasite humans and domestic animals and are vectors of pathogens, including zoonoses. Repellents are an important tool of tick control. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of N,N-diethyl- 3-methylbenzamide (DEET), a standard repellent, versus β-citronellol in a Petri dish bioassay. A semicircle of filter paper (31.8cm2) was treated with 87μl of one of four concentrations (0.200, 0.100, 0.050 and 0.025mg/cm2) of β-citronellol, DEET or solvent (ethanol). A head-to-head test was developed treating one side with increasing concen

Since their return from Persian Gulf War (PGW), many veterans have complained of symptoms including muscle and joint pain, ataxia, chronic fatigue, headache, and difficulty with concentration. The causes of the symptoms remain unknown. Because these veterans were exposed to a combination of chemicals including pyridostigmine bromide (PB), DEET, and permethrin, we investigated the effects of these agents, alone and in combination, on the sensorimotor behavior and central cholinergic system of rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (200-250 gm) were treated with DEET (40 mg/kg, dermal) or permethrin (0.

BACKGROUND: Permethrin and N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) are the pesticides and insect repellent most commonly used by humans. These pesticides have been shown to promote the epigenetic transgenerational inheritance of disease in rats. The current study was designed as an epigenome-wide association study (EWAS) to identify potential sperm DNA methylation epimutation biomarkers for specific transgenerational disease.
METHODS: Outbred Sprague Dawley gestating female rats (F0) were transiently exposed during fetal gonadal sex determination to the pesticide combination including Permethrin an

N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) has been registered for commercial use as an insect repellent for over five decades, and is used widely across the world. Concerns over the safety of DEET first emerged during the 1980s after reports of encephalopathy following DEET exposure, particularly in children. However, the role of DEET in either the illness or deaths was and remains purely speculative. In response to these cases a number of reviews and investigations of DEET safety were carried out. Here we examine the methods used and information available to determine the safety of DEET in humans. Anima

The effect of skin application of N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) on the penetration and migration behavior of cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni was evaluated in vitro and in vivo in a mouse model. These studies showed that DEET at concentrations of 7.5% or higher was 100% effective in immobilizing and killing cercariae of S. mansoni in vitro. Ultrastructural studies on such DEET-exposed cercariae showed transformative and degenerative changes involving both tegument and deeper parenchymal structures. Fatal tissue lesions were evident as early as 5 min postexposure to DEET, and became more exten

Mosquitoes are vectors for a variety of infectious illnesses, and chemical synthetic insecticides have made it possible to control them effectively. Mosquito repellents are a typical means of keeping mosquitos at bay. Because of its main effectiveness of skin permeability, N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) is one of the most extensively used mosquito repellents but a dangerous synthetic chemical. DEET was identified about a decade ago to inhibit mosquito's Odorant Binding Protein 1 (OBP1), impairing the mosquito's ability to recognise the host body odour. OBP1 has been identified as a possible

N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) is a common and fairly safe active ingredient in many insect repellents. Our recent studies showed that when applied to the skin, DEET has a potent anti-parasitic effect against Schistosoma mansoni. However, the beneficial effects of DEET lasted only for a few minutes, presumably due to its rapid absorption through the skin. In this study, we evaluated different carrier formulations that prolong the activity of DEET in the skin. Among the various formulations analyzed, DEET incorporated into liposomes (LIPODEET) appeared to prolong the activity of DEET for more

Triatomines are vectors of Chagas disease. Control of Triatoma infestans, one of its main vectors, relies largely on the use of pyrethroid insecticides. However, due to resistance to them as well as environmental concerns, alternative control strategies are required. Here, we evaluated the volatile repellent activity of eucalyptol, carvacrol, carvone, and DEET (N, N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) under conditions that prevented the contact of the insects with the compounds, and under a human odor background, providing a realistic assessment of repellency for human protection. Importantly, eucalypt

Rhodnius prolixus is one of the most important vectors of Chagas disease in Central and South America for which repellents and attractants are sorely needed. Repellents like DEET, picaridin, and IR3535 are widely used as the first line of defense against mosquitoes and other vectors, but they are ineffective against R. prolixus. Our initial goal was to identify in R. prolixus genome odorant receptors sensitive to putative sex pheromones. We compared gene expression of 21 ORs in the R. prolixus genome, identified 4 ORs enriched in male (compared with female) antennae. Attempts to de-orphanize t
