Does Compression of the Fourth Ventricle Cause Preterm Labor? Analysis of Data From the PROMOTE Study.

BACKGROUND: The technique for the compression of the fourth ventricle (CV4) in the brain has been described as a method of reaching the physiologic centers that reside in its floor and of restoring optimal flow of the cerebrospinal fluid. However, a study published as an abstract in 1992 questioned whether CV4, when applied to pregnant women, could induce uterine contractions and possibly labor. OBJECTIVE: To further examine whether CV4 could induce uterine contractions and labor as part of the osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) protocol used in the Pregnancy Research in Osteopathic Man

Chest compression fraction calculation: A new, automated, robust method to identify periods of chest compressions from defibrillator data - Tested in Zoll X Series.

AIM: To introduce and evaluate a new, open-source algorithm to detect chest compression periods automatically by the rhythmic, high amplitude signals from an accelerometer, without processing single chest compression events, and to consecutively calculate the chest compression fraction (CCF). METHODS: A consecutive sample of defibrillator records from the German Resuscitation Registry was obtained and manually annotated in consensus as ground truth. Chest compression periods were determined by different automatic approaches, including the new algorithm. The diagnostic performance of these app

Trends in hospitalizations for vertebral compression fracture in ankylosing spondylitis: data from the National Inpatient Sample 2000-2014.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients are at increased risk of vertebral compression fractures (VCF). Our objective was to examine the yearly trend of VCF hospitalizations in AS patients as compared to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and the general population. National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database (2000-2014) was used to identify adult (≥ 18 years) hospitalizations, based on validated ICD-9 diagnosis codes. The rate of VCF hospitalizations, as a primary diagnosis, was assessed in three mutually exclusive groups: AS, RA, and the general population. The prevalence of VCF hospitalization was highest

Round-knit or flat-knit compression garments for maintenance therapy of lymphedema of the leg? - Review of the literature and technical data.

To date, there have been no studies comparing flat-knit and round-knit compression garments for maintenance therapy of lymphedema of the leg. According to expert opinion, flat-knit fabrics are generally recommended for this purpose. Given the differences in the clinical presentation of lymphedema in terms of disease stage and location as well as patient adherence, and, last but not least, for economic reasons, it seems questionable whether all patients with lymphedema of the leg actually do require flat-knit compression garments. Considering technical aspects, published data and our own clinic

Mechanical assessment with data-driven hybrid machine learning-based optimization of compressive strength of sustainable biochar-concrete composite.

The rapid rise in global population and industrial activity has intensified environmental challenges, particularly carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from the cement and concrete industry. Biochar, a carbon-rich byproduct of biomass pyrolysis, has emerged as a promising solution for sustainable construction by enhancing carbon sequestration and improving mechanical performance when partially substituting cement. This study integrates experimental evidence with advanced machine learning (ML) techniques to evaluate the compressive strength, cost-efficiency, and carbon footprint of biochar-incorporat

The contribution of load magnitude and number of load cycles to cumulative low-back load estimations: a study based on in-vitro compression data.

BACKGROUND: Cumulative low-back load is suggested to be associated with low back pain, possibly due to (micro-)fractures of spinal segments. Based on available in vitro data it can be assumed that, in order to predict spine segment failure from cumulative compressive loading, load magnitude should be weighted with an exponent higher than one, whereas the number of cycles should be weighted with an exponent lower than 1. The aim of the present study was to assess both exponents based on available in-vitro data. METHODS: Data on loading to fatigue fracture of spinal segments under cyclic compre

Underprovision of Medical Compression Therapy: Retrospective Analysis Based on Statutory Health Insurance Data on Venous Leg Ulcers, Chronic Venous Disease and Comorbidities.

Chronic venous diseases (CVD), including venous leg ulcers (VLU), represent a significant health burden. Despite the central role of compression therapy in current treatment guidelines, recent evidence suggests substantial gaps in provision. A retrospective cohort study was conducted using anonymized claims data from 3.35 million insured individuals. Persons with VLU or CVD in 2017 were observed over 5 years. Compression therapy, comorbidities, antibiotic prescriptions, and physician contacts were analysed. The prevalence was 0.50% for VLU (n = 16 615) and 7.27% for CVD (n = 243 681). Across 5

Sulfate ions diffusion in concrete under coupled effect of compression load and dry-wet circulation.

The diffusion of Sulfate ions in concrete is a complex process and affects the performance of concrete. Experiments on the time-dependent distribution of sulfate ions in concrete under the coupling of pressure load, dry-wet circulation, and sulfate attack, and the diffusion coefficient of sulfate ions with various parameters was tested. The applicability of the cellular automata (CA) theory to simulate the diffusion of sulfate ions was discussed. In this paper, a multiparameter cellular automata (MPCA) model was developed to simulate the impacts of load, immersion ways, and sulfate solution co

Train-Track-Bridge Dynamic Interaction on a Bowstring-Arch Railway Bridge: Advanced Modeling and Experimental Validation.

This article describes the validation of a 3D dynamic interaction model of the train-track-bridge system on a bowstring-arch railway bridge based on experimental tests. The train, track, and bridge subsystems were modeled on the basis of large-scale and highly complex finite elements models previously calibrated on the basis of experimental modal parameters. The train-bridge dynamic interaction problem, in the vertical direction, was efficiently solved using a dedicated computational application (TBI software). This software resorts to an uncoupled methodology that considers the two subsystems

MBGC2: Boosting compression via efficient encoding of approximate matches in genome collections.

BACKGROUND: FASTA is the primary format for representing DNA, RNA, and protein sequences. While progress has been made, specialized FASTA collection compressors still struggle with practical limitations and inconsistent performance across different datasets, hindering effective storage and transfer of large genomic datasets. RESULTS: We present an enhanced version of the Multiple Bacteria Genome Compressor (MBGC), a high-throughput, in-memory algorithm for compressing genome collections. It relies on information about maximum exact matches in the compressed set to identify possibly long appro
