An evaluation of stillbirths in İstanbul by examining death certificates.

AIM: Despite the fact that the frequency of stillbirth is estimated to be about the same as that of early neonatal deaths, stillbirth records and statistics are not kept on a regular basis worldwide and their causes cannot be determined. The aim of our study was to examine the causes and characteristics of stillbirths in Istanbul. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All death certificates of 2011 archived in 8 District Cemetery Directorships, which manage 322 cemeteries within the boundaries of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, were examined. Based on the burial licences, weight, gestational weeks, the m

Mortality in neurofibromatosis 1: an analysis using U.S. death certificates.

Although neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) is a relatively common autosomal dominant condition, information about its effect on mortality is limited. We used Multiple-Cause Mortality Files, compiled from U.S. death certificates by the National Center for Health Statistics, for 1983 through 1997. We identified 3,770 cases of presumed NF1 among 32,722,122 deaths in the United States, a frequency of 1/8,700, which is one-third to one-half the estimated prevalence. Mean and median ages at death for persons with NF1 were 54.4 and 59 years, respectively, compared with 70.1 and 74 years in the general popula

Brain stem death certification protocol.

Transplantation of Human Organs is guided by laid down specific Laws in India. The organs which are targeted to be transplanted are liver, kidney and cornea. The waiting list is enormous but the donor pool is meagre. This document has been made with a view that the donor pool can be enlarged by identifying patients who are 'Brain Dead' while still not having 'Cardiac Death'. The steps include the prerequisite conditions which must be satisfied by patients who have suspicion of being brain dead, detailed examination of the patient, confirmation of the Brain Death and Counselling of the relative

Death certification in fractured neck of femur.

Fracture of the neck of the femur is a major public health problem within the elderly population of most industrialised countries whose health services are increasingly being taken up with its management. Moreover, within Britain, there is evidence of a real increase in its incidence even allowing for the ageing of the population. A condition whose aetiology is still far from clear (and where no strategy for prevention can therefore be formulated), and which is of such importance to the planning and provision of services demands detailed investigation and careful monitoring. Mortality data are

Death certificate and mortality in rheumatoid arthritis.

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), 500 males and 500 females, aged 40 years and over, together with an age- and sex-matched control population, were observed over a 10-year period. Altogether 208 male and 148 female RA patients died during the follow-up period. RA was mentioned on the death certificates of 111 men (53%) and for 96 women (65%). Serious underreporting of RA was observed when the main cause of death was malignant neoplasms and diseases of the circulatory system. The results show that analysis of the causes of death can be highly biased if the RA diagnosis is based only on i

Death on the permafrost: revisiting the 1918-1920 influenza pandemic in Alaska using death certificates.

The 1918-1920 influenza pandemic devastated Alaska's Indigenous populations. We report on quantitative analyses of pandemic deaths due to pneumonia and influenza (P&I) using information from Alaska death certificates dating between 1915 and 1921 (n = 7147). Goals include a reassessment of pandemic death numbers, analysis of P&I deaths beyond 1919, estimates of excess mortality patterns overall and by age using intercensal population estimates based on Alaska's demographic history, and comparisons between Alaska Native (AN) and non-AN residents. Results indicate that ANs experienced 83% of all

Medical death certificates in the emergency department: ethical and legal issues.

The last medical act many emergency physicians must do in the context of caring for a dying patient and mourning relatives is to issue a medical death certificate (MDC). The physician is charged with filling in the MDC in cases that do not involve judicial certification. Ethical conflicts and doubts about the cause of death are common when MDCs are issued in emergencies. This paper analyzes the main ethical and legal issues related to MDCs in this setting. The ethical precepts to bear in mind when a conflict or doubt arises are loyalty to the patient, truthfulness, doing no harm, and using pub

Validation of diagnoses on death certificates for male alcoholics in Stockholm.

The mortality and the causes of death have been studied in a cohort consisting of 1548 male alcoholics in Stockholm. During the period 1969-1981 there were 542 cases of death in this population. The mortality rates were triple those for males in Stockholm generally. Using the official causes of death there was a highly significant excess mortality in the following diagnostic groups: Cancer in the upper digestive region, primary hepatic cancer, cirrhosis in the liver, pancreatitis, pneumonia, alcoholism and alcoholic poisoning, suicides and other causes of violent death as well as ischemic hear

The quality of medical death certification of cause of death in hospitals in rural Bangladesh: impact of introducing the International Form of Medical Certificate of Cause of Death.

BACKGROUND: Accurate and timely data on cause of death are critically important for guiding health programs and policies. Deaths certified by doctors are implicitly considered to be reliable and accurate, yet the quality of information provided in the international Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) usually varies according to the personnel involved in certification, the diagnostic capacity of the hospital, and the category of hospitals. There are no published studies that have analysed how certifying doctors in Bangladesh adhere to international rules when completing the MCCD or hav

Deaths attributed to X-ray contrast media on U.S. death certificates.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of our study were to determine the number, rate, and types of deaths attributed to specific X-ray contrast media on the basis of U.S. death certificates and to attempt to assess the comparative safety of commonly used diagnostic X-ray contrast agents using death certificate information. CONCLUSION: From 1999 through 2001, deaths attributed to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) code for contrast media occurred at the rate of 1.1-1.2 per million contrast media packages distributed. An analysis of 1999 death certificates indicated that most deaths attrib

Underreporting and misclassification of urinary tract cancer cases on death certificates.

We compared the diagnoses for decreased cases with urinary tract cancer reported to the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program with their underlying cause of death reported on death certificates. Deaths for a substantial proportion of cases were ascribed to noncancer causes (bladder, 48%; kidney, 28%; renal pelvis, 37%; and other urinary tract, 38%), which decreased with advancing stage at diagnosis and increased with length of survival. In general, cancer deaths were more likely to be recorded to the predominant subsite within an organ. Only 5.5% of renal pelvis cancer pat

Causes of Death of Women With HIV: Discordance Between Interdisciplinary Primary Care Teams and Death Certificates.

BACKGROUND: The unadjusted life expectancy of U.S. women with HIV is 12 years less than U.S. women without HIV. Understanding how women with HIV die is necessary to reduce this disparity but is compromised by well-documented flaws with death certificate data. SETTING: University of California, San Francisco Women's HIV Program. METHODS: Using a period cross-sectional design, we compared multiple causes of death in women with HIV determined by structured meetings of an interdisciplinary clinic team with multiple causes of death listed on death certificates. We included deaths occurring betwee

Incomplete and inaccurate death certification--the impact on research.

BACKGROUND: The objectives of this study were (1) to investigate the extent of erroneous and/or omitted information on death certificates of patients-implanted with Bjork-Shiley Convexo-Concave (BSCC) heart valves; (2) to determine whether this information could be associated with a possible under-reporting of acute mechanical failure of this valve. METHODS: A review was carried out of death certificates and clinical notes for patients implanted in the United Kingdom with BSCC valves. This was a multicentre study (38 hospitals) based at the Cardiothoracic Department, NHLI, Imperial College Sc

Standard Death Certificates Versus Enhanced Surveillance to Identify Heroin Overdose-Related Deaths.

OBJECTIVES: To compare 2 approaches to identifying heroin-related deaths in cases of overdose: standard death certificates and enhanced surveillance. METHODS: We reviewed Maryland death certificates from 2012 to 2015 in cases of overdose to determine specific mentions of heroin. Counts were compared with estimates obtained through an enhanced surveillance approach that included a protocol considering cause of death, toxicology, and scene investigation findings. RESULTS: Death certificates identified 1130 heroin-related deaths. Enhanced surveillance identified 2182 cases, nearly double the nu

Accuracy of cancer death certificates in Spain: a summary of available information.

OBJECTIVES: Differences in mortality rates within Europe might be partly due to the quality of mortality statistics. The present article summarizes the available data on the quality of cancer death certification in Spain. A short description of the temporal distribution of the proportion of deaths due to ill-defined tumors in Spain -an indirect indicator of the quality of cancer death certification- is also provided. METHODS: Relevant studies were identified from electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, IME and IBECS) and from manual searches of the references contained in the articles retrieve

Unspecified injuries on death certificates: a source of bias in injury research.

Protective gear (for example, helmets and bulletproof vests) shields certain body regions from damaging energy. Failure to specify on death certificates the body region and nature of fatal injuries compromises the utility of mortality data for epidemiologic or prevention research. Of fatally injured California motorcyclists, 41% had no specific injuries listed on their death certificates in 1988. To examine the implications of this problem, the authors abstracted 186 coroner's or medical examiner's reports from four California counties with over 60% nonspecific injuries and one county with few

Diversity in death certification: a case vignette approach.

Previous studies have revealed high rates of errors in death certification, but few have discussed the nature of these errors. To explore the diversity among physicians in death certification and its relationship with the complexity of the causal sequence of death, we asked 145 physicians attending a continuing medical education course to complete the cause-of-death section on dummy death certificates of four case vignettes. The difficulty in determining the causal sequence of death varied from relatively simple to complex. Variations in death certification were classified according to wording

A review of death certificates listing Lyme disease as a cause of death in the United States.

Lyme disease was listed as an underlying or multiple cause of death on 114 death records during 1999-2003. Upon review, only 1 record was consistent with clinical manifestations of Lyme disease. This analysis indicates that Lyme disease is rare as a cause of death in the United States.
