Incidence and predictors of new-onset atrioventricular block requiring pacemaker implantation after sutureless aortic valve replacement.

OBJECTIVES: In high-risk patients with severe aortic stenosis, aortic valve replacement (AVR) with a sutureless Perceval prosthesis (SU-AVR) can be performed instead of conventional AVR or transcatheter aortic valve implantation. Little data are available regarding postoperative conduction disorders after SU-AVR. We aimed to determine the incidence and predictors of new-onset complete atrioventricular block (NO-AVB) requiring permanent cardiac stimulation following SU-AVR. METHODS: We studied consecutive patients who underwent SU-AVR between 2013 and 2015. Early patients underwent partial aor

[Introduction of a decalcification method for bone marrow biopsy tissue].

Bone marrow biopsy is one of the important means of hematopathological diagnosis, which has decisive diagnostic significance for various benign and malignant lymphohematopoietic system diseases. Its diagnostic value includes morphological observation, immunohistochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology testing. Owing to the unique nature of bone marrow biopsy, decalcification is an essential step in the pre-treatment process. Its purpose is to remove calcium from bone tissue, preserve intact collagen fiber components, facilitate tissue sectioning, and prevent tissue detachment during stainin

Mitral Valve Replacement Adopting Chimney Technique in Mitral Insufficiency And Extensive Mitral Annular Calcification: A Case Report.

Extensive and serious mitral annular calcification represents a troublesome obstacle in intracardiac mitral valve replacement due to time-consuming requirements and the potential of decalcification-associated complications. We report the case of a high-risk patient with extremely severe mitral insufficiency and difficult-to-debride annular calcification who received mitral replacement using a chimney technique. This approach enabled not only the minimization of mitral calcification debridement but also the reduction of surgery time. Consequently, the surgery was successful with a great postope

Partial ring annuloplasty in the management of mitral annular calcification.

Mitral annular calcification (MAC) complicates the management of mitral valve (MV) disease, regardless of its etiology. Strategies to address MV surgery in MAC include two main options with their own pros and cons; respect and resect strategy. Here, we present a case of minimally-invasive MV repair with partial annuloplasty in the management of noncircumferential MAC with respect to strategy. This technique may be an alternative option for rescuing high-risk patients without extensive decalcification.

[Histomorphological studies on the topography of the inflammation progression in marginal periodontitis. A comparison of grinding and sectioning methods].

By using a combination of histologic methods (decalcified and nondecalcified sections) the morphologic information on topological characteristics of periodontal disease is broader. Inflammatory parameters of disease progression and stagnation are well documentable. Exclusively ground stained sections of nondecalcified specimen of the local relationship of gingiva, calculus, and plaque are able to characterize the topology of the periodontal disease progress and the typical liquid phase of subgingival plaque.

Abrasion-debridement of aortic valve calcific stenosis. Immediate and mid-term clinical results.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonic debridement of aortic valve calcific stenosis has been abandoned because of high incidence of late insufficiency, due to retraction of cusps damaged by ultrasonic energy. The feasibility of alternative decalcification technique has been tested at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery of the University of Siena, Italy, using the abrasive power of a diamond burr, actioned by electrical high speed motor. METHODS: Between January 1995 and March 1996, fifteen patients underwent aortic decalcification. Mean age was 69.6 years. RESULTS: All were symptomatic an

[Histological processing of iliac crest biopsies based on decalcification and paraffin embedding with reference to osteolytic and hematologic diagnosis].

A survey is given of methods involving decalcification and paraffin embedding of iliac crest biopsy for osteological and haematological diagnostic procedures. In order to avoid shrinkage, loss of antigens, and fading of ferritin iron and enzymes, a fixative has been designed that is composed of an aqueous solution of calcium acetate (10(-1) M), glutaraldehyde (0.5%), and formaldehyde (1%; CGF). CGF-fixated specimens are decalcified in an aqueous solution of 10% di-sodium ethylene-diaminotetraacetate (EDTA) neutralized by tris[hydroxy]methylaminomethane and embedded in paraffin. "A Bridge-over-the Bar": A Novel Strategy to Prevent Paravalvular Regurgitation during Mitral Valve Replacement for Severe Mitral Annular Calcifications.

Mitral annular calcifications have been known to increase complexity during mitral valve replacement (MVR). Standard procedure requires decalcification followed by reconstruction of the mitral annulus prior to placing the prosthesis. While this is the ideal technique, it is not feasible in every patient due to the associated risks. The mere attempt at valve replacement without proper annular decalcification has been associated with a high incidence of periprosthetic leak which complicates the postoperative course and has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality. With the advances

[Morphometric analysis of periosteocytic osteolysis: its application to the diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism].

The authors indicate the required methodologic conditions for the morphometric analysis of periosteocytic osteolysis, a reliable and specific feature of overactivity of the parathyroid gland. Indeed, significant periosteocytic enlargement has been found in 101 113 cases of primary hyperparathyroidism compared to 92 reference cases. The measurement of the size of the periosteocytic lacunae may be carried out either on hand of a micrometric eyepiece or of a picture analyser. It has to be carried out on decalcified bone sections of 5 microns thickness and it is necessary to measure at least 50 la

Precision hybrid technique for direct SAPIEN-3 ultra™ implantation in extensive mitral annular calcification.

Mitral valve surgery in patients with extensive mitral annular calcification remains challenging. Different surgical approaches have been described: from a complete decalcification and reconstruction of the mitral annulus to other techniques where a full debridement was avoided to minimize the risk of possible peri-operative complications. In the current era of transcatheter valve implantation, the issue of mitral annulus calcification has been addressed by some with the adoption of a hybrid technique, where a transcatheter aortic valve is implanted in mitral position, during open heart surger

Three-dimensional cellular visualization in mouse apical periodontitis using combined whole-mount staining and optical tissue clearing.

Apical periodontitis is an inflammatory disease involving lesions located within the jawbone. Histological evaluations generally require decalcification and sectioning, which has limited our understanding of the three-dimensional (3D) organization and spatial distribution of different immune cell types in these lesions. A recently developed technique combining tissue clearing and whole-mount immunofluorescent labeling allows us to acquire such information from the deep tissue without sectioning. However, whole-mount immunofluorescent labeling in the jawbone requires further development. Here w

Optimization of ovine bone decalcification for increased cellular detail: a parametric study.

There are many published methods of decalcifying bone for paraffin histology; however, the current literature lacks details regarding the processing of ovine tissue. Ovine bone tissue presents challenges, as samples are often denser and larger than other comparative animal models, thus increasing decalcification times. Trifluoroacetic Acid (TFAA) has previously been used to decalcify ovine bone samples for histological analysis. Unfortunately, TFAA is a strong acid and often results in loss of cellular detail, especially in the connected soft tissue. This is generally manifested as over staini

Outcomes of Valve Repair for Degenerative Disease in Patients With Mitral Annular Calcification.

BACKGROUND: The risk factors for the development of mitral annular calcification (MAC) in degenerative mitral valve disease and the effect it may have on patient-and valve-related outcomes require further evaluation. METHODS: Between January 2002 and December 2015, 627 patients underwent mitral valve operations for degenerative disease. MAC was seen in 75 patients (12%); 73 (97%) underwent valve repair (6 without annuloplasty ring implantation) and 2 (3%) underwent valve replacement after an unsuccessful repair attempt. RESULTS: MAC was linked to patient age, female sex, and degenerative dis

Accelerated orthodontic tooth movement: surgical techniques and the regional acceleratory phenomenon.

BACKGROUND: Techniques to accelerate tooth movement have been a topic of interest in orthodontics over the past decade. As orthodontic treatment time is linked to potential detrimental effects, such as increased decalcification, dental caries, root resorption, and gingival inflammation, the possibility of reducing treatment time in orthodontics may provide multiple benefits to the patient. Another reason for the surge in interest in accelerated tooth movement has been the increased interest in adult orthodontics. REVIEW: This review summarizes the different methods for surgical acceleration o

One protocol to rule them all: a pilot study to identify the best fixation and decalcification approach for bone marrow biopsy immunohistochemistry.

OBJECTIVE: Standardization of the pre-analytical phases of bone marrow trephine biopsy (BM) has yet to be achieved. In particular, several fixative and decalcifying reagents with specific benefits and drawbacks are described, but only a few direct comparisons are available. This study aims to test the most used fixation and decalcification protocols and evaluate their effect on tissue antigenicity via immunohistochemistry (IHC). METHODS: To avoid damaging and exhausting diagnostic BMs, we used "surrogate" BMs obtained from dedicated grossing of a non-pathologic spleen. Eleven fixation and dec
