[NO- and H2S-synthesizing neurons in thoracic ganglion of crabs Eriocheir japonicus and Pugettia quadreidens (Decapoda)].

By methods of histochemical marking of NADPH-diaphorase and immunohistochemical marking of cystathionine-beta-synthase (CBS), the presence and distribution of NO and H2S-synthesizing elements in thoracic ganglion are shown in two crab species Eriocheir japonicus and Pugettia quadreidens. In the thoracic ganglion, NO and H2S have been established to be synthesized by different neurons. The high CBS activity in efferent elements--segmentary motoneurons, interneurons, and nerve fibers in the extremity neuropil--indicates involvement of hydrogen sulfide in organization of the crustacean motor beha

Effect of copper on hatching and development of larvae of the estuarine crab Chasmagnathus granulata (Decapoda, Brachyura).

Ovigerous females of the estuarine crab Chasmagnathus granulata were exposed to 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, and 3 mg/L of copper during the egg incubation period. Regarding egg loss, a higher effect was observed at higher copper concentrations: 80% of the females lost their eggs at 0.5 mg/L, whereas no hatching was seen in those exposed to 3 mg/L. A significant decrease was found in the number of hatched larvae in females exposed to 0.5 mg/L, as was a significant decrease in the duration of the incubation period. In addition, several morphological abnormalities were seen and observed. Hydropsy and atrophy

The ultrastructure of the posterior midgut caecum of Pachygrapsus crassipes (Decapoda, Brachyura) adapted to low salinity.

The effects of salinity adaptation and of composition and tonicity of fixatives upon the ultrastructure of the posterior midgut caecum (PMC) of Pachygrapsus crassipes have been studied. The PMC epithelium consists of a single layer of columnar cells with a microvillous border. The apical cytoplasm contains numerous mitochondria, lysosomes, and much smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus are situated in the perinuclear cytoplasm. This epithelium resembles other transporting epithelia in that the basal cytoplasm has an extensive system of branched tubules f

Updated checklist of semi-terrestrial and estuarine crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura) of Barbados, West Indies.

Considering the growing threats to the biodiversity of small Caribbean islands (e.g., habitat loss and fragmentation, overexploitation, invasive species, and climate change), it is important to establish biodiversity inventories that serve as baselines for monitoring and evaluation of conservation efforts. In Barbados (West Indies), the most recent comprehensive taxonomic account of brachyuran crabs came from Rathbun (1921) reporting the specimens collected by the University of Iowa Barbados-Antigua Expedition in 1918. The present study fills the 100-year gap in knowledge by providing an updat

Sexual dimorphism in a freshwater atyid shrimp (Decapoda: Caridea) with direct development: a geometric morphometrics approach.

Neocaridina davidi is a caridean shrimp that has gained popularity in recent years as an ornamental species. Using geometric morphometrics, we investigated sexual dimorphism in carapace and second abdominal segment shape of N. davidi. Adult females displayed a more elongated carapace and a longer rostrum than males. However, male carapace shape was similar to that of juvenile females. The second abdominal pleura was more elongated and wider in adult females than in males. Significant differences were found in centroid size for the carapace and the second abdominal segment between sexes, which

The effect of astaxanthin on resistance of juvenile prawns Macrobrachium nipponense (Decapoda: Palaemonidae) to physical and chemical stress.

In recent years, the use of new scientific techniques has effectively improved aquaculture production processes. Astaxanthin has various properties in aquaculture and its antioxidant benefits have been closely related to stress resistance; besides, it is an essential factor for growth in many crustaceans and fish. The objective of this study was to evaluate the resistance of prawn (Macrobrachium nipponense) fed diets containing different amounts of astaxanthin (AX) to the shock and stress of different physicochemical environments. A 70-day trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of suppleme

A new species of the mud shrimp genus Axianassa Schmitt, 1924 (Decapoda: Gebiidea: Laomediidae) from Japan.

The laomediid mud shrimp genus Axianassa Schmitt, 1924 is currently represented by 12 species worldwide. In this study, a new species of the genus, A. microlepis, is described and illustrated on the basis of two female specimens obtained from Awaji Island, eastern part of the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, at depth of 8 m. The type specimens were collected by means of an airlift suction sampler, which enables collection of infauna in subtidal soft sediments. The new species, representing the fourth species of the genus known from the western Pacific, is readily distinguished from other congeners by t

Freshwater crabs and Simulium neavei in east Africa. III. Morphological variation in Potamonautes loveni (Decapoda: Potamidae).

Potamonautes loveni (Colosi) is the valid name for the species also described as P. granviki, P. harvardi and P. loveni longimerus, and incorrectly identified as P. berardi berardi. Potamonautes jeanelli and P. idjwiensis may be allied to P. loveni, but are geographically separated and show sufficient morphological distinction not to be considered conspecific. Potamonautes loveni occurs in the upper reaches of rivers on the highlands of western Kenya and eastern Uganda. Its replacement by other species, principally P. niloticus, at lower altitudes is probably determined by the temperature rang

The effect of Mauritanian and Benguela upwelling waters on micronekton (Decapoda, Euphausiacea, and Lophogastrida) in the Southeastern Atlantic Ocean.

Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems play a crucial role in marine productivity, supporting rich biodiversity and sustaining significant global fisheries. These dynamic regions are characterized by nutrient-rich waters that fuel complex food webs, making them vital for ecosystem functioning and fisheries management. Understanding the composition and distribution of key zooplankton groups, such as pelagic crustaceans, is essential for assessing ecosystem dynamics, particularly in the context of climate variability. In this study, we describe the community composition of pelagic crustaceans in the

Revealing European cave shrimp diversity: a new species of Spelaeocaris (Decapoda, Atyidae) named through public participation.

The family Atyidae, the world's largest family of freshwater shrimps, is represented in Europe almost exclusively by subterranean species. The Dinaric Karst of the northwestern Balkans is among the most species-rich regions for atyids, hosting two genera, Troglocaris and Spelaeocaris. Recent speleobiological surveys in the southern Dinaric Karst of Bosnia and Herzegovina revealed a new cave shrimp species, described here as Spelaeocaris electa Jugovic & Zakšek, sp. nov. based on specimens collected during several field campaigns during 2013 and 2021. The epithet "electa" was chosen by a public

Two new species of the genus Lepidophthalmus (Decapoda, Axiidea, Callianassidae) from coastal Pacific waters of Central America.

Two new species of intertidal ghost shrimp are described from coastal Central American habitats of the eastern Pacific Ocean, bringing the total known membership of the genus to 18 species. Lepidophthalmus natesi sp. nov. from Colombia and Nicaragua shares with Lepidophthalmus panamensis sp. nov. from Colombia and Panama the lack of extensive ventral pleomere armor, especially in lacking a median ventral sclerite on the second pleomere. The absence of this plate is also a character of the eastern Pacific species L. rafai Felder & Manning, 1998, but the two new species differ from it in telson

A conspicuously coloured new species of the Alpheus macrocheles group from the central Indian Ocean (Decapoda: Alpheidae).

A new snapping shrimp species of the Alpheus macrocheles (Hailstone, 1835) group is described based on a single adult male specimen collected on an exposed forereef near Magoodhoo Island, Faafu Atoll, Maldives. Alpheus dingabadi sp. nov. is one of several species of the A. macrocheles group characterised by the presence of a stout distoventral tooth on the merus of the third pereiopod, but can be separated from all of them by several morphological features, including the unusually long appendix masculina on the second pleopod, as well as by its conspicuous and highly diagnostic colour pattern.

Malacostraca Podophthalmata Britanni 18151875 by William Elford Leach and the history of its fragmented publication (Crustacea: Decapoda).

The present study documents the fragmented publication history of Malacostraca Podophthalmata Britanni by William Elford Leach, illustrated with coloured figures of all the species by James Sowerby. This work was originally proposed to consist of 12 or 14 numbers. One number was to be published every two months between the years 1815 and 1818. Although this was increased to 19 numbers its publication by James Sowerby halted at number 17 in 1820. In that year Leach had a complete nervous breakdown and, although he eventually recovered, he was retired from his post at the British Museum in 1822.
