Transmission in squid giant synapses: the importance of oxygen supply and the effects of drugs.

Synaptic transmission was studied in giant synapses of the stellate ganglion of the squid. When bathed in air-saturated sea water, the synapses deteriorate in 10 to 20 min.; if the sea water is saturated with 100 per cent oxygen, they function steadily for up to 12 hours. Optimal results probably require a medium with lower magnesium and higher calcium than the sea water used. Of eighteen compounds known to affect other synapses (Table I), none had stimulatory effects when applied to the preparation, but ten produced synaptic depression in concentrations of 10(-3) gm. per ml. or higher. The on

Spontaneous ophthalmic lesions in laboratory-housed common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis and hummingbird bobtail squid Euprymna berryi.

OBJECTIVES: Given the limited ocular pathology data for common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis and hummingbird bobtail squid Euprymna berryi despite their high visual dependency, the purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the ophthalmic lesions in a cohort of laboratory-housed common cuttlefish and hummingbird bobtail squid. METHODS: Cases were retrospectively selected from the International Zoo Veterinary Group Pathology database that reported confirmed clinical ophthalmic lesions or histopathological lesions. Twenty-five cases were identified that included clinical records and g

Bacterial growth dynamics in a rhythmic symbiosis.

The symbiotic relationship between the bioluminescent bacterium Vibrio fischeri and the bobtail squid Euprymna scolopes serves as a valuable system to investigate bacterial growth and peptidoglycan (PG) synthesis within animal tissues. To better understand the growth dynamics of V. fischeri in the crypts of the light-emitting organ of its juvenile host, we showed that, after the daily dawn-triggered expulsion of most of the population, the remaining symbionts rapidly proliferate for ∼6 h. At that point the population enters a period of extremely slow growth that continues throughout the night

Helium Optically Pumped Magnetometers Can Detect Epileptic Abnormalities as Well as SQUIDs as Shown by Intracerebral Recordings.

Magnetoencephalography based on superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) has been shown to improve the diagnosis and surgical treatment decision for presurgical evaluation of drug-resistant epilepsy. Still, its use remains limited because of several constraints such as cost, fixed helmet size, and the obligation of immobility. A new generation of sensors, optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs), could overcome these limitations. In this study, we validate the ability of helium-based OPM (4He-OPM) sensors to record epileptic brain activity thanks to simultaneous recordings with intra

Evolutionary theory and the treatment of depression: It is all about the squids and the sea bass.

According to the analytical rumination hypothesis, depression is an evolved adaptation (like pain or anxiety) that served in our ancestral past to keep people focused on complex interpersonal problems until they could arrive at a resolution (spontaneous remission). If this is true, then those clinical treatments that most facilitate the functions that depression evolved to serve are likely to be more advantageous in the long run than others that simply relieve distress. For example, antidepressant medications may be efficacious in the treatment of depression but only work for so long as they a

Neurally underdeveloped cuttlefish newborns exhibit social learning.

Learning can occur through self-experience with the environment, or through the observation of others. The latter allows for adaptive behaviour without trial-and-error, thus maximizing individual fitness. Perhaps given their mostly solitary lifestyle, cuttlefish have seldomly been tested under observational learning scenarios. Here we used a multi-treatment design to disentangle if and how neurally immature cuttlefish Sepia officinalis hatchlings (up to 5 days) incorporate social information into their decision-making, when performing a task where inhibition of predatory behaviour is learned.

Shape, Size, and Structure Affect Obliquely Striated Muscle Function in Squid.

Hollow, cylindrical body plans, and obliquely striated muscles are characteristic of soft-bodied invertebrates, and both affect the biomechanics of movement in these diverse animals. We highlight two different aspects of functional heterogeneity in obliquely striated muscles, one driven by animal shape and size and the other by the intrinsic mechanical properties of the fibers. First, we show how a hollow, cylindrical shape in the mantle of cephalopod molluscs causes a significant difference in muscle strain (defined as the change in length divided by resting length) across the mantle wall, an

Camera-type eye specific visual ontogeny in squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana).

The well-developed vision of vertebrates possessing camera-type eyes is rapidly established during the early phases of life. Cephalopods, a group of mollusks, possess well-developed camera-type eyes similar to those of vertebrates. Although the anatomy of the cephalopod visual system has been studied as an example of convergent evolution between vertebrates and invertebrates, knowledge of their vision and ontogeny is limited. Therefore, this study focused on the squid Sepioteuthis lessoniana to anatomically and behaviorally trace the ontogeny of vision, which includes eye anatomy, visual acuit

Nematode Infections in Commercially Important Squid Species: Distribution Patterns and Food Safety Issues.

INTRODUCTION: Cephalopods represent a valuable fishery resource worldwide and play a crucial role in the marine food chain both as predators and prey but also as paratenic hosts for the transmission of Ascaridoids, including zoonotic nematodes of the Anisakidae family. This study aimed to assess the presence, tissue distribution and species composition of zoonotic parasites in four squid species marketed in Italy, coming from four different FAO areas. METHODS: A total of 238 squid specimens, Illex sp., I. coindetii, I. illecebrosus and Todaropsis eblanae, were caught across four FAO areas and

Cephalopod behaviour.

Underlying all animal behaviors, from the simplest reflexive reactions to the more complex cognitive reasoning and social interaction, are nervous systems uniquely adapted to bodies, environments, and challenges of different animal species. Coleoid cephalopods - octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish - are widely recognized as the most behaviorally complex invertebrates and provide exciting opportunities for studying the neural control of behaviour. These unusual molluscs evolved over 400 million years ago from slow-moving armored forms to active predators of coastal and open ocean ecosystems. In th

Visual perception and camouflage response to 3D backgrounds and cast shadows in the European cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis.

To conceal themselves on the seafloor, European cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, express a large repertoire of body patterns. Scenes with 3D relief are especially challenging because it is not possible either to directly recover visual depth from the 2D retinal image or for the cuttlefish to alter its body shape to resemble nearby objects. Here, we characterised cuttlefish camouflage responses to 3D relief, and to cast shadows, which are complementary depth cues. Animals were recorded in the presence of cylindrical objects of fixed (15 mm) diameter, but varying in height, greyscale and strength

Aminoglycoside-induced damage in the statocyst of the longfin inshore squid, Doryteuthis pealeii.

Squid are a significant component of the marine biomass and are a long-established model organism in experimental neurophysiology. The squid statocyst senses linear and angular acceleration and is the best candidate for mediating squid auditory responses, but its physiology and morphology are rarely studied. The statocyst contains mechano-sensitive hair cells that resemble hair cells in the vestibular and auditory systems of other animals. We examined whether squid statocyst hair cells are sensitive to aminoglycosides, a group of antibiotics that are ototoxic in fish, birds, and mammals. To as

The length-force behavior and operating length range of squid muscle vary as a function of position in the mantle wall.

Hollow cylindrical muscular organs are widespread in animals and are effective in providing support for locomotion and movement, yet are subject to significant non-uniformities in circumferential muscle strain. During contraction of the mantle of squid, the circular muscle fibers along the inner (lumen) surface of the mantle experience circumferential strains 1.3 to 1.6 times greater than fibers along the outer surface of the mantle. This transmural gradient of strain may require the circular muscle fibers near the inner and outer surfaces of the mantle to operate in different regions of the l

Crystallization of calcium carbonate salts into beta-chitin scaffold.

Composites of beta-chitin with calcium carbonate polymorphs were prepared by precipitation of the mineral into a chitin scaffold by means of a double diffusion system. The beta-chitin was obtained from the pen of the Loligo sp. squid. The three main polymorphs of calcium carbonate: aragonite, calcite and vaterite, were observed. Their location within the matrix is a function of the polymorph. The supersaturation inside the compartmentalized space in the chitin governs the location and polymorphism of the crystals.

Chromatophore motor fields in the squid, Lolliguncula brevis.

Chromatophore motoneurones in Lolliguncula brevis are known to originate in the suboesophageal lobes of the brain and to project directly to the mantle and fin through bilateral stellate ganglia and fin nerves. The chromatophore motor fields of stellar and fin nerves were investigated by stimulation of the cut end of individual nerves in a semi-intact preparation. This elicited expansion of yellow and brown chromatophores in distinct motor fields. Brown chromatophores extended over the entire mantle, whereas yellow chromatophores were limited to the dorsal and lateral mantle areas. Combined ne

Lineage-Specific Venom Gene Expression Shapes Chemical Diversity in Cephalopods.

Animal venoms represent a major source of chemical novelty, yet how venom compounds originate, diversify, and are maintained across deep evolutionary timescales remains poorly understood. This gap is especially pronounced in cephalopods, which evolved venom systems used in predation, defense, and sexual competition, but whose venom genetic architectures, secretory cell types, and venom-producing glands remain largely unexplored. To date, only a single cephalopod venom compound with confirmed paralytic activity and a known primary sequence, SE-CTX from the golden cuttlefish Acanthosepion escule
