Response to Burgman and Regan: the elephant in the rhetoric on info-gap decision theory.

The formal, rigorous assessment of IGDT in Sniedovich (2012) reveals that this theory's central pillar, namely its robustness model, is a reinvention of a well-established model of local robustness, known universally as radius of stability (circa 1960). As a matter of fact, this robustness model is a simple model derived from Wald's famous maximin paradigm (circa 1940). This means that had there been any gap in the state of the art that IGDT could have possibly presumed to fill, this gap had already been filled decades ago, well before IGDT was even contemplated. The conclusion therefore is th

The impact of bilateral cerebellar damage on theory of mind, empathy and decision making.

The extensive infarction affecting the posterior vermis and the medial and posterior regions of both cerebellar hemispheres, as well as the small central pontine lesion, seems to have disrupted multiple cerebral and brainstem cerebellar loops. These loops process information related to many cognitive domains, behavior and emotion, including decision making, empathy and theory of mind.

The window of opportunity: decision theory and the timing of prognostic tests for newborn infants.

In many forms of severe acute brain injury there is an early phase when prognosis is uncertain, followed later by physiological recovery and the possibility of more certain predictions of future impairment. There may be a window of opportunity for withdrawal of life support early, but if decisions are delayed there is the risk that the patient will survive with severe impairment. In this paper I focus on the example of neonatal encephalopathy and the question of the timing of prognostic tests and decisions to continue or to withdraw life-sustaining treatment. Should testing be performed early

Prospect theory on the brain? Toward a cognitive neuroscience of decision under risk.

Most decisions must be made without advance knowledge of their consequences. Economists and psychologists have devoted much attention to modeling decisions made under conditions of risk in which options can be characterized by a known probability distribution over possible outcomes. The descriptive shortcomings of classical economic models motivated the development of prospect theory (D. Kahneman, A. Tversky, Prospect theory: An analysis of decision under risk. Econometrica, 4 (1979) 263-291; A. Tversky, D. Kahneman, Advances in prospect theory: Cumulative representation of uncertainty. Journa

Finding the best fit: a grounded theory of contraceptive decision making in women.

PROBLEM: Half of the pregnancies in the United States that occur annually are unintended, and of these, half occur among women using contraceptives. METHODS: Interviews with 16 women, field notes, and memos were analyzed using constant comparative analysis and the methods of open, axial, and selective coding were used until saturation occurred. FINDINGS: The core category that describes the process of contraceptive decision making in women is "finding the best fit." Women choose a method or methods to prevent pregnancy based on their knowledge, experience, and evaluation of what would be the

Factors That Influence Intraoperative Decision-Making among Pediatric Neurosurgeons: A Grounded Theory Study.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric neurosurgery is a subspecialty of medicine that is responsible for diagnosing, managing, and treating neurological disease in children with the use of surgery. Good intraoperative decision-making is critical to ensuring patient safety, yet almost nothing is known about what factors play a role in intraoperative decisions. As such, the purpose of this paper was to explore the factors that influence intraoperative decisions when pediatric neurosurgeons encounter something unexpected or uncertain during surgery. METHODS: The study utilized the grounded theory method of da

Distinct Aspects of Decision Making in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Application of Unconscious Thought Theory.

Individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) rely on "explicit learning" strategies in decision making. It is suggested that periods of brief distraction (in healthy individuals) result in better decisions in complex situations. It can be hypothesized that periods of unconscious thought would not lead to better decisions due to impairment of implicit learning in OCD. A total of 121 OCD patients and 120 healthy participants were presented with a task in which they had to choose between four apartments with multiple attributes. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditio

Comparison of two diagnostic algorithms for regular broad complex tachycardia by decision theory analysis.

Sensitivity and specificity are two inversely related properties of a diagnostic test and it is often practically infeasible to secure a high value for both simultaneously. Decision theory analysis shows that the utility of a diagnostic test depends not only on its sensitivity and specificity but also on the prevalence of the intended target disorder: when prevalence is low, a high specificity is more important than a high sensitivity, whereas when prevalence is high, a high sensitivity is more important than a high specificity. The significance of this principle is illustrated by two popular

How young children learn mental state words: Decision processes and links to theory of mind.

Learning words that refer to mental states is a critical developmental milestone, yet how these words are learned remains poorly understood. In this study, 102 Chinese young children (Mage = 3.28; 45 girls) and 102 young adults (Mage = 22.67; 54 women) completed a novel word-learning task, in which a pseudoword was paired with videos depicting goal-directed reaching and distressed crying. Results indicated that children had difficulty learning mental state words, as reflected by their lower accuracy compared to adults. Diffusion model analyses further explored the underlying processes and foun

Developing a model of guilty plea decision-making: Fuzzy-trace theory, gist, and categorical boundaries.

OBJECTIVES: To date, most research on plea bargaining has used some form of the shadow of the trial (SOT) model to frame defendant decisions. In this research, we proposed and tested a new conceptual model of plea decision-making, based on fuzzy-trace theory (FTT), for the context in which a nondetained, guilty defendant chooses between a guilty plea or trial, where both the plea and potential trial sentence entail incarceration. HYPOTHESES: We predicted that plea decisions would be affected by (a) meaningful, categorical changes in conviction probability (e.g., low to moderate, moderate to h

Three quantitative approaches to the diagnosis of abdominal pain in children: practical applications of decision theory.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The authors compared 3 quantitative methods for assisting clinicians in the differential diagnosis of abdominal pain in children, where the most common important endpoint is whether the patient has appendicitis. Pretest probability in different age and sex groups were determined to perform Bayesian analysis, binary logistic regression was used to determine which variables were statistically significantly likely to contribute to a diagnosis, and recursive partitioning was used to build decision trees with quantitative endpoints. METHODS: The records of all children (1,208)

Diminished Value Discrimination in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Prospect Theory Model of Decision-Making Under Risk.

Introduction: It has been hypothesized that people diagnosed with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) exhibit behavioral aberrations when faced with the potential for negative outcomes, but the specific cognitive aspects of decision-making that may be altered have not been systematically studied in clinical populations. Here, we studied decision-making in a clinical cohort using a task that allows for examination of the decision weights and values associated with different choice outcomes. Methods: Patients diagnosed with OCD (n = 10), generalized anxiety disorder (n = 15), social

From Computational Models to Clinical Decision-Making in Epilepsy: Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice.

Epilepsy is one of the most heterogeneous and unpredictable neurological disorders, characterized by complex brain dynamics, significant interindividual variability, and a therapeutic response that is often difficult to predict. Despite major advances in neuroimaging, electrophysiology, and antiepileptic treatments, clinical decision-making still faces major challenges, including precisely localizing the epileptogenic zone, predicting seizures, identifying drug-resistant patients, and optimizing personalized therapeutic strategies. Over the past two decades, computational models have gradually

Exploring the path to corruption-An informed grounded theory study on the decision-making process underlying corruption.

Past corruption research at the individual level has mainly focused on demographics, personality, attitudes, or morality related variables. Until now, only a few studies have focused on the intra-individual psychological mechanisms of corruption. Building on normative decision-making theory, the present study attempts to shed further light on the internal mechanisms that lead to the decision that corruption is a viable path. Following an informed grounded theory approach, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 38 Indonesian prisoners who have been convicted of corruption. Guided by a mul

Healthcare Facilities Redesign Using Multicriteria Decision-Making: Fuzzy TOPSIS and Graph Heuristic Theories.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare facilities are crucial assets that are necessary to be updated and evaluated regularly. One of the most pressing issues today is the renovation of healthcare facilities to match international standards. In large projects involving nations renovating healthcare facilities, it is necessary to rank the evaluated hospitals and medical centers in making optimal decisions for the redesign process. OBJECTIVE: This study presents the process of renovating old healthcare facilities to meet international standards, applying proposed algorithms for measuring compliance for redesig

The relationship between affective decision-making and theory of mind in the frontal variant of fronto-temporal dementia.

Structural brain imaging and neuropsychological data implicate the orbital aspects of prefrontal cortex in the developing neuropathology of fvFTD. Damage to this region is associated with deficient performance on laboratory tasks assessing theory of mind (ToM) and affective decision-making (DM), but the relationship between these two capacities in patients with prefrontal cortex dysfunction is unclear. We studied a group of patients with early/mild fvFTD (n=20) and a group of matched normal controls (n=10) on the Iowa gambling task (IGT) of affective decision-making, and the "reading the mind

To understand my decisions, you must understand my task: Expertise effects in theory of mind.

Human behavior is frequently constrained by the behavior of other agents (increasingly artificial agents like machines and software). In a cooperative setting, each individual needs to understand the partners' intentions and corresponding actions to plan their actions adequately. Misunderstandings have adverse effects and diminish the efficiency of cooperation. We created a game-based experiment to study the effects of understanding a partner's actions in a cooperative setting. In this game, the players depend on each other's ability to make good decisions to succeed. In two studies (N = 87, N

Using the theory of reasoned action (TRA) to understand the decision to use condoms in an STD clinic population.

The theory of reasoned action (TRA) provides useful information when designing health education interventions. In this study, 703 heterosexual STD clinic clients responded to a TRA-based survey. With steady partners, social norms and attitudes toward condom use were significant predictors of intention for both men and women. The interaction of attitude and norm increased prediction for men (R = .64, p < 0.001) and women (R = .70, p < 0.001). With casual partners, attitude was a predictor for men and social norm was a predictor for women. Prior use of condoms increased prediction for men (R = .

Evaluation of a Decision Mining Tool for Nursing Quality Improvement by Hospital Nurses: Theory-Guided Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) are widely implemented in hospitals, yet their uptake in nursing practice remains inconsistent. While electronic health records continuously capture nursing decision data, these data are rarely used to support structured quality improvement. Decision mining offers a novel approach by reconstructing and visualizing decision logic from clinical decision logs to support retrospective reflection and protocol evaluation rather than real-time alerting. Before such tools can be integrated into quality improvement programs, their acceptance by clin

Decision-making processes behind seeking regular cardiac checkups for individuals with Marfan syndrome: A grounded theory study.

Patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS) present with various symptoms, such as aortic aneurysm/dissection, tall stature, and lens deviation. Among them, acute aortic dissection is a complication that leads to sudden death. Some individuals with MFS are reluctant to see a cardiologist and discontinue regular checkups until they develop life-threatening complications. We conducted a grounded theory study to investigate how individuals with MFS decided whether to adhere to healthcare recommendations, specifically to attend cardiology appointments. The study recruited individuals with a clinical or ge
