A qualitative screening method for 17 coccidiostats in eggs and animal muscle by QuEChERS-UPLC-MS/MS validated according to Regulation (EU) 2021/808.

Coccidiostats are veterinary drugs commonly used in poultry livestock to treat and prevent coccidiosis, a severe and widespread parasitic infections in the industry. In the European Union, several coccidiostats are authorized as feed additives for poultry and laying hens, which may lead to residues in muscle tissues and eggs. The aim of this study was the development and validation, compliant with Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/808, of an qualitative screening method for the determination of seventeen coccidiostats in eggs and animal muscle tissues using a QuEChERS extraction app

Scientific Opinion on the safety and efficacy of the product Cylactin® (Enterococcus faecium) as a feed additive for chickens for fattening.

Cylactin® is a product consisting of viable cells of Enterococcus faecium. The product strain was found to beresistant to kanamycin. A detailed study of the nature of kanamycin resistance demonstrated the absence ofknown acquired genes coding for aminoglycosides-modifying enzymes. Two genetic determinants, theaminoglycoside acetyltransferase gene aac(6')-li and the gene sfkmr, both intrinsic to E. faecium, were shown tocontribute to the resistance to kanamycin. In the view of the FEEDAP Panel, the resistance of this strain of E.faecium is most likely to be caused by an unknown mechanism that p

Screening of Chemical Residues and Antimicrobial Resistance in Dehydrated Chicken Feet Intended as Dog Treats: A Pilot Study.

The pet population is steadily increasing worldwide, and treats, which account for approximately 15% of the pet food market, are the fastest-growing segment of the pet food industry. However, the widespread use of antimicrobials in poultry farms may pose a direct risk to pets' health, leading to the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. For this reason, we sought to assess the possible presence of drug residues and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in a limited cohort of 11 dehydrated chicken feet intended as dog treats purchased from the European market. Residues of nicarbazin (64%), 4-4' din

Coccidiosis in the Chukar Partridge ( Alectoris chukar ): A Survey of Coccidiosis Outbreaks and a Test of Anticoccidial Drugs Against Eimeria kofoidi.

Field isolates of coccidia from 20 natural outbreaks in the chukar partridge ( Alectoris chukar ) were received from gamebird farms in 10 U.S. states. These were propagated in the laboratory and identified by microscopy and PCR. Of 20 samples, 18 were Eimeria kofoidi, two were Eimeria legionensis only, and one was a mixture of the two species. One isolate of E. kofoidi also contained an unidentified species detected only by PCR, nucleotide sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis. The efficacy of anticoccidial drugs against chukar coccidia was tested with experimental infections in battery cages.

Sarcocystosis from a One Health perspective: Revisiting zoonotic potential, transmission dynamics, clinical features, and control strategies.

Sarcocystosis is an emerging zoonotic disease caused by apicomplexan parasites of the genus Sarcocystis, which can infect a wide range of hosts, including humans, animals, reptiles, and birds. Humans may serve as either definitive or intermediate hosts, depending on Sarcocystis species. Consumption of undercooked beef containing mature sarcocysts of Sarcocystis hominis or Sarcocystis heydorni, or of raw or partially cooked pork containing Sarcocystis suihominis zoitocysts, may lead to intestinal sarcocystosis in humans. In contrast, muscular sarcocystosis follows ingestion of food or water con

A step forward to revolutionize the eimeriosis controlling strategies in cattle by using traditional medication.

More than 10 species of Eimeria is found in cattle but Eimeria zuernii is one of the most pathogenic protozoan parasites affecting the global livestock industry. At the herd level, E. zuernii can cause illness in 10-80% of animals and reduce gross margins by 8-9%, leading to estimated annual losses of $731 million. This review highlights the economic impact, prevalence, and current control methods for E. zuernii infections, as well as the challenges associated with treatment and the development of alternative control methods. In the past two decades, 22 studies have examined synthetic drugs fo

Coccidiosis and cryptosporidiosis in sheep and goats.

The protozoan diseases, coccidiosis and cryptosporidiosis, are important enteric diseases of sheep and goats, resulting in diarrhea, inefficient weight gains, and occasionally death. Coccidiosis is a widespread, serious economic disease affecting animals who are preweaned, recently weaned, or in unsanitary, stressful, or crowded conditions, as well as after entering feedlots. The Eimeria species in sheep and goats are relatively host specific. Control is accomplished through sanitation and by incorporating one of the modern coccidiostats, such as lasalocid or decoquinate, in feed or salt to en

Effect of dietary antimicrobials on immune status in broiler chickens.

This study evaluated the effects of dietary anticoccidial drugs plus antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) on parameters of immunity in commercial broiler chickens. Day-old chicks were raised on used litter from a farm with endemic gangrenous dermatitis to simulate natural pathogen exposure and provided with diets containing decoquinate (DECX) or monensin (COBN) as anticoccidials plus bacitracin methylene disalicylate and roxarsone as AGPs. As a negative control, the chickens were fed with a non-supplemented diet. Immune parameters examined were concanavalin A (ConA)-stimulated spleen cell prolif

Sensitivity of field isolates of Eimeria acervulina and E. maxima from three regions in Brazil to eight anticoccidial drugs.

Rotation with different active ingredients is among the most effective and recommended strategies to preserve the efficacy of anticoccidial drugs and reduce the emergence of resistance. Tools such as anticoccidial sensitivity tests (ASTs) are ideally used to make rational rotation programs and bring benefits to production. The objective of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity of E. acervulina (EA) and E. maxima (EM) from 3 different regions in Brazil, by using four ASTs. Feces samples weighing 6 to 7 kg were collected in the regions of São Paulo, Paraná, and Minas Gerais. Prevalent oocys

Anticoccidial activity of a botanical natural product based on eucalyptus, apigenin and eugenol against Eimeria tenella in broiler chickens.

BACKGROUND: Chicken coccidiosis is an intracellular parasitic disease that presents major challenges to the development of the commercial poultry industry. Perennial drug selective pressure has led to the multi-drug resistance of chicken coccidia, which makes the prevention and control of chicken coccidiosis extremely difficult. In recent years, natural plant products have attracted the attention of researchers due to their inherent advantages, such as the absence of veterinary drug residues. The development of these natural products provides a new direction for the prevention and treatment of

Protozoan infections (Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum and Sarcocystis spp.) in sheep and goats: recent advances.

The protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii is a serious cause of fetal mortality in sheep and goats. Oocysts, the parasite stage responsible for initiating infection, are produced following a primary infection in cats. A primary infection in pregnant sheep and goats can establish a placental and fetal infection which may result in fetal death and resorption, abortion or stillbirth. Diagnosis is aided by the clinical picture, the presence of characteristic small white necrotic foci in placental cotyledons, the possible presence of a mummified fetus and on fetal serology and histopathology.
