Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are one of the most severe atmospheric pollutants. They are mainly emitted into the atmosphere from anthropogenic sources such as automobile exhaust, incomplete fuel combustion, and various industrial processes. VOCs not only cause hazards to human health or the environment but also adversely affect industrial installation components due to their specific properties, i.e., corrosive and reactivity. Therefore, much attention is being paid to developing new methods for capturing VOCs from gaseous streams, i.e., air, process streams, waste streams, or gaseous fue

Deep eutectic solvents (DES) have demonstrated their ability to facilitate skin penetrability of rigid nanoparticles (NPs). Here, we reported a feasible and simple transdermal delivery strategy using mesoporous silica nanoparticles impregnated in DES hydrogels for topical management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). To achieve this goal, nanoceria was immobilized within a silica nanoparticle matrix (MSN) and encapsulated with methotrexate (MTX). The functionalized nanoparticles were first engineered in an Arginine (Arg)-citric acid (CA) DES and then transferred to the carbomer hydrogel matrix. Due

Cancer immunotherapy has attracted considerable attention since the early 2010s as an alternative to conventional cancer treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Among these approaches, cancer vaccines exert preventive and therapeutic effects by eliciting immune responses against tumor antigens. However, most cancer vaccines still rely on injection-based administration, which is associated with pain, the risk of secondary infection, and an increased burden on healthcare professionals. To address these limitations, we focused on noninvasive and convenient transdermal administ

Sustainability is driving the replacement of fossil fuel-derived materials with renewable alternatives. Transient electronics designed for short-term wear, such as resistive sensors, are poised to benefit from such initiatives by improving their environmental footprint. Their fabrication principally from renewable constituents with established degradability would increase their environmental circularity and eliminate their accumulation as electronic waste owing to their eventual degradation. This raises an important question: which ecologically benign materials can be integrated into resistive

Polyphenols are structurally diverse plant secondary metabolites with broad biological activities and growing applications across the food, health, and materials sectors. Conventional extraction based on organic solvents (e.g., methanol, ethanol) is often energy-intensive, inefficient, and environmentally burdensome. Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have therefore emerged as greener alternatives for polyphenol extraction. This review evaluates recent advances in solvent design, extraction performance, and process sustainability. Imidazolium-based ILs frequently achieve hig

Hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDESs) are emerging as sustainable, biodegradable, and nontoxic alternatives to traditional organic solvents in liquid-liquid extraction processes. This study investigates the use of HDESs, specifically eutectic mixtures of dl-menthol combined with acetic or hexanoic acids, for extracting caffeine from coffee beans (CB), coffee skin (CS), and guaraná drink (GD). Solvent screening using COSMO-RS modeling was performed to identify effective HDES systems. Caffeine detection employed UV/vis spectrophotometry at 274 nm (dl-menthol/acetic acid system) and 284 nm (

Wittig reaction between substituted phosphonium salts and (hetero)aromatic and alkyl carbonyl compounds in Deep Eutectic Solvents has been developed under a scalable and friendly protocol. Highly efficient reactions were successfully run with a wide range of bases including organic (DBU, LiTMP, t-BuOK) and inorganic (NaOH, K2CO3) ones in ChCl/Gly 1 : 2 (mol/mol) as solvent under mild conditions, at room temperature and under air. The proposed protocol was applied to a wide range of substrates, including (hetero)aromatic aldehydes with substituents as halogens (I, Br, Cl), EDG (alkoxy, methyl),

Hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs) are widely used in ion exchange, water purification, and gas separation. However, HCP synthesis typically requires hazardous halogenated solvents e. g., dichloroethane, dichloromethane and chloroform which are toxic to human health and environment. Herein we hypothesize that the use of halogenated solvents in HCP synthesis can be overcome with deep eutectic solvents (DES) comprising metal halides-FeCl3, ZnCl2 that can act as both the solvent hydrogen bond donor and catalyst for polymer crosslinking via Friedel Crafts alkylation. We validated our hypothesis by s

Atenolol, one of the top five best-selling drugs in the world today used to treat angina and hypertension, and to reduce the risk of death after a heart attack, faces challenges in current synthetic methods to address inefficiencies and environmental concerns. The traditional synthesis of this drug involves a process that generates a large amount of waste and other by-products that need disposal. This study presents a one-pot DES-based sustainable protocol for synthesizing atenolol. The use of the DES allowed the entire process to be conducted with no need for additional bases or catalysts, in

C. vulgaris microalgae biomass was employed for the extraction of valuable bioactive compounds with deep eutectic-based solvents (DESs). Particularly, the Choline Chloride (ChCl) based DESs, ChCl:1,2 butanediol (1:4), ChCl:ethylene glycol (1:2), and ChCl:glycerol (1:2) mixed with water at 70/30 w/w ratio were used for that purpose. The extracts' total carotenoid (TCC) and phenolic contents (TPC), as well as their antioxidant activity (IC50), were determined within the process of identification of the most efficient solvent. This screening procedure revealed ChCl:1,2 butanediol (1:4)/H2O 70/30

A systematic research work on the rational design of task specific Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) has been carried out via density functional theory (DFT) in order to increase knowledge on the key interaction parameters related to efficient SO2 capture by DES at a molecular level. A total of 11 different DES structures, for which high SO2 affinity and solubility is expected, have been selected in this work. SO2 interactions in selected DES were investigated in detail through DFT simulations and this work has generated a valuable set of information about required factors at the molecular level to

Deep eutectic solvents were used in both dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction and solid-phase extraction for the purification of chloromycetin and thiamphenicol from milk. In the dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction procedure, deep eutectic solvents mixed with chloroform at different ratios (0:1-5:1, v/v) were used as the extraction agent to optimize the procedure, and the ratio of 2:1 v/v was found to be the best extraction agent with 87.23 and 83.17% recoveries of chloromycetin and thiamphenicol, respectively. Furthermore, deep eutectic solvents were also used to modify molecular imp

We report an efficient synthetic strategy to diverse hydantoins and thiohydantoins involving a three-component reaction with the aid of deep eutectic solvent. Here, N,N'-dimethyl urea and N,N'-dimethyl thiourea play a dual role as reactant and reaction medium along with l-(+)-tartaric acid. The three-component reaction provides an easy access to 5-amino-1,3-dialkyl-substituted hydantoins and thiohydantoins in good yields.

Rubia tinctorum L. roots are a valuable source of anthraquinones and other bioactive phytochemicals. In this study, nine hydrophilic deep eutectic solvents (DESs), based on choline chloride or tetrabutylammonium bromide, were evaluated as green extractants for the selective recovery of bioactive compounds. Their performance was compared with four conventional solvents (acetonitrile, methanol, ethanol-water, and water). Among DESs, choline chloride-lactic acid and choline chloride-malonic acid showed the highest extraction efficiency for gallic acid, caffeine, quercetin, alizarin, and purpurin.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of the hazardous gases during coal or hydrogen sulfide combustion in petrochemical and coal-related industries. Unfortunately, SO2 is released into the atmosphere in most SO2-involved industries. The high concentration of SO2 in the atmosphere leads to acid rain, which leads to various damage and destruction of the environment. Therefore, preventing SO2 emissions into the atmosphere is vital. Considering environmental guidelines, Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs), as the recent category of green solvents because of their eco-friendly characteristics are interesting. Con
