Application of a Brief Measure of Delay Discounting to Examine the Relationship Between Delay Discounting and the Initiation of Substance Use Among Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Higher rate of Delay Discounting (DD) is associated with increased risk for the initiation and development of substance use disorders in adolescents. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to provide a preliminary assessment of the validity of a brief self-report measure of DD by examining discounting rates across 3 periods of increasing delay and subsequently examining the extent to which overall DD scores are associated with having initiated tobacco, alcohol and cannabis use. METHODS: Data were collected in the 2012 fall cycle of the British Columbia Adolescent Substance Use Survey. The

Less systematic decision-making during delay discounting, but not discounting rate, is robustly linked to psychopathology.

Delay discounting, the preference for smaller rewards available sooner over larger rewards available later, exhibits robust individual differences and is thought to contribute to risky behaviors, problematic substance use, and a variety of psychiatric disorders. An individual's behavior on delay discounting tasks is often measured using a hyperbolic discounting model, but this model does not account for inconsistent or nonsystematic choices, which can lead to high rates of exclusions. The practice of excluding participants whose behavior is not perfectly systematic can bias results and is inco

Evidence for post-decisional conflict monitoring in delay discounting.

Choice impulsivity can be measured by offering a sequence of various binary choices between smaller, immediately available rewards and larger, later available rewards. An individual's delay discount (DD) rate reflects the aggregate decision-making tendency. Given the broad spectrum of disorders associated with a high DD rate, this may be an important transdiagnostic factor. This study aimed to establish whether post-decisional neurophysiological processes reflecting the presence of error monitoring are involved in delay discounting. A large sample (N = 97) was investigated, including 46 female

Effects of benztropine analogs on delay discounting in rats.

RATIONALE: Methylphenidate and d-amphetamine, medications used for treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are used recreationally and self-administered by laboratory animals. Benztropine (BZT) analogs, like those medications, increase synaptic dopamine levels but are less effective in maintaining self-administration, suggesting clinical utility with less abuse liability. OBJECTIVES: The current study was designed to evaluate potential therapeutic effects of BZT analogs related to ADHD. METHODS: Rats responded under a delay-discounting procedure in which responses on on

Can delay discounting deliver on the promise of RDoC?

The National Institute of Mental Health launched the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) initiative to better understand dimensions of behavior and identify targets for treatment. Examining dimensions across psychiatric illnesses has proven challenging, as reliable behavioral paradigms that are known to engage specific neural circuits and translate across diagnostic populations are scarce. Delay discounting paradigms seem to be an exception: they are useful for understanding links between neural systems and behavior in healthy individuals, with potential for assessing how these mechanisms go awry

Neuropsychological function and delay discounting in methamphetamine-dependent individuals.

RATIONALE: Methamphetamine (MA) dependence accounts for substantial neuropsychiatric morbidity. Furthermore, there is evidence in the literature of psychiatric and cognitive impairment in chronic users. OBJECTIVES: This report compares the general psychiatric and cognitive functioning, including impulsive decision-making, of individuals dependent on MA and normal controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one currently abstinent individuals in treatment for MA dependence and 41 controls participated. Controls were selected to minimize group differences in age and gender. MA users met DSM-IV crit

Reward magnitude-specific delay discounting differentiates mania versus depression risk.

Mania/hypomania, the pathognomonic feature of bipolar disorder (BD), is characterized by elevated impulsivity, often assessed via delay discounting-the preference for smaller, immediate versus larger, delayed rewards. It remains unclear whether delay discounting differentiates BD from non-BD individuals or serves as an objective behavioral marker of mania/hypomania versus depression risk. Bipolar disorder (n = 40) and non-BD (n = 187) individuals were recruited, with the latter encompassing a range of mania/hypomania and depression risk and stratified into mania/hypomania and depression risk t

Time perception and delay discounting in the FMR1 knockout rat.

There is substantial evidence for timing (time perception) abnormalities related to developmental disabilities, particularly autism spectrum disorder. These findings have been reported in humans and nonhuman preclinical models. Our research objective was to extend that work to a genetic knockout (KO) model of fragile X/developmental disability, the FMR1 KO rat. We also sought to test delay discounting in the model and assess potential relations between timing and choice behavior. Consistent with previous human and nonhuman work, we found reduced timing precision in the FMR1 KO rats. We also di

Delay discounting, impulsiveness, and addiction severity in opioid-dependent patients.

Individuals who abuse drugs show higher delay discounting (DD) rate and impulsiveness scores compared with controls; however, it is unclear if DD rate covaries with severity of the addiction or if an individual's discounting rate can be changed by effective substance abuse treatment. This study compared methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) patients (n = 30) who had not used illegal drugs for 2 years with drug-using MMT patients (n = 30) and controls (n = 25) in terms of addiction severity, DD rate, and impulsiveness. Methadone patients abstinent from illegal drugs scored significantly lower o

Is the delay discounting paradigm useful in understanding social anxiety?

The delay discounting paradigm was used to examine its utility in understanding motivational factors among socially anxious individuals. Participants (n=88) who reported high and low levels of social anxiety were randomly assigned to either a social threat or non-threat condition and their subsequent rates of discounting were examined. A significant difference in rates of discounting was found between the high and low social anxiety groups within the non-threat condition, with high social anxiety participants showing increased discounting. This study suggests that a modified version of the del

Delay-probability asymmetry in discounting: An anomaly in multiattribute choice.

The discounting of delayed rewards plays an important role in everyday decision making, and steep discounting is associated with numerous behavioral problems. Most tasks used to assess delay discounting, however, are far simpler than many everyday decisions in which outcomes are both probabilistic and delayed. Probability, not delay, has been suggested to be the more salient attribute, a phenomenon we term delay-probability asymmetry. In two experiments, we compared preference on two-attribute (amount and either delay or probability) tasks designed to result in equivalent discounting with pref

Delay discounting in emotional disorders: A three-level meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Delay discounting (DD) has been proposed as a transdiagnostic mechanism underlying diverse psychiatric disorders and mental health conditions. Although extensive research has examined DD patterns in patients with emotional disorders (EDs), the direction and magnitude in EDs relative to healthy controls (HCs) remains controversial. METHODS: This study employed a three-level meta-analysis to quantify DD differences between EDs (including depression, anxiety disorders, and bipolar disorders) and HCs through a quantitative synthesis of eligible studies published until December 2024, a

Willingness to wait outperforms delay discounting in predicting drinking severity.

Alcohol misuse ranks among the leading causes of preventable death worldwide. Therefore, discovering measures that can predict hazardous drinking is critical. The delay discounting paradigm-which assesses relative preference for immediate rewards over larger, later rewards-has frequently been used as a proxy for impulsive choice, but it does not capture how long someone is willing to wait for delayed rewards when the arrival time is uncertain. In contrast, a newer willingness-to-wait task measures how long someone is willing to wait for a delayed reward of uncertain timing before giving up. We

Impaired delay discounting and time sensitivity in methcathinone use disorder.

Substance use disorder (SUD) is characterized by continued drug use despite adverse consequences. Methcathinone is a new type of psychoactive substance that is associated with high excitement and impulsive behaviors. However, it is unclear if individuals with methcathinone use disorders (MCUD) are with impaired decision-making ability. We analyzed the task performance in 45 male MCUD subjects and 35 male matched healthy controls (HC) with intertemporal decision-making task. Constant sensitivity discounting model was used to estimate potential changes in both discounting rate and time sensitivi

Heroin delay discounting and impulsivity: Modulation by DRD1 genetic variation.

BACKGROUND: Dopamine D1 receptors (encoded by DRD1) are implicated in drug addiction and high-risk behaviors. Delay discounting (DD) procedures measure decisional balance between choosing smaller/sooner rewards vs larger/later rewards. Individuals with higher DD (rapid discounting) are prone to maladaptive behaviors that provide immediate reinforcement (eg, substance use). DRD1 variants have been linked with increased DD (in healthy volunteers) and opioid abuse. This study determined whether four dopaminergic functional variants modulated heroin DD and impulsivity. METHODS: Substance use, DD,

An investigation of delay and probability discounting in hoarding disorder.

Behavioral impulsivity may be a mechanism of hoarding disorder (HD). A commonly used and well-validated measure of impulsivity is the delay and probability discounting task, which consists of making decisions about receiving monetary rewards after varying delay intervals and delivery probabilities. We compared delay and probability discounting and self-reported behavioral impulsivity in 81 patients with a primary diagnosis of HD and 45 nonclinical controls. HD participants completed the impulsivity measures before and after 16 weekly sessions of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), whereas cont

Adolescent methylmercury exposure affects choice and delay discounting in mice.

The developing fetus is vulnerable to low-level exposure to methylmercury (MeHg), an environmental neurotoxicant, but the consequences of exposure during the adolescent period remain virtually unknown. The current experiments were designed to assess the effects of low-level MeHg exposure during adolescence on delay discounting, preference for small, immediate reinforcers over large, delayed ones, using a mouse model. Thirty-six male C57BL/6n mice were exposed to 0, 0.3, or 3.0ppm mercury (as MeHg) via drinking water from postnatal day 21 through 59, encompassing the murine adolescent period. A

Contrived motivating operations alter delay-discounting values of disordered gamblers.

The present study required 9 disordered gamblers to make hypothetical selections between smaller and larger amounts of money at varying delays. Participants were also required to respond to the task given the contrived hypothetical conditions of earning twice or half as much as they did at their current jobs. The results demonstrated how participants' delay discounting was altered via contrived motivating operations, strengthening the argument that discounting may be a state variable.

Neuromodulation of delay discounting, the reflection effect, and cigarette consumption.

Cigarette smokers and substance users discount the value of delayed outcomes more steeply than non-users. Higher discounting rates are associated with relapse and poorer treatment outcomes. The left dorsolateral prefontal cortex (DLPFC) exerts an inhibitory influence on impulsive or seductive choices. Greater activity in the prefrontal cortex is associated with lower discounting rates. We hypothesized that increasing activity in the left DLPFC with high frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (HF rTMS) would decrease delay discounting and decrease impulsive decision-making in a

A delay-specific neural indicator corresponds to delay-discounting behavior for both gain and loss.

OBJECTIVES: Delay-discounting, wherein the subjective value for delayed gain or loss decreases, has been attracting much attention from the social sciences as well as neuroscience and has been suggested asbeing related to reward processing in the brain. As reported, the feedback-related negativity (FRN), an electrophysiological measure of reward processing, increased by delayed-monetary gain and ΔFRN, which is the difference in FRNs for loss and gain at a certain time point, had no significant correlation with delay-discounting for gain. Thus, although a delay for gain could affect FRN, it is
