A previously healthy 26-yr-old male presented for an electrodiagnostic evaluation with complaints of significant right deltoid muscle atrophy and shoulder abduction weakness after receiving an intramuscular (IM) deltoid injection of an antiemetic 4 wk earlier. Electrodiagnostic evaluation confirmed an acute axillary neuropathy. We hypothesize that direct mechanical trauma to the anterior branch of the axillary nerve resulted in axillary mononeuropathy with axonal loss, although chemically induced nerve injury cannot be excluded. Injections in and about the shoulder complex are performed routin

This study investigated the thickness of the deltoid muscle and the location of the anterior branch of the axillary nerve (AAN) and posterior circumflex humeral artery (PCHA), with the goal of maximizing the effectiveness of deltoid injections. Forty specimens from 22 adult Korean cadavers were used. A reference line was identified, connecting the anterior point of the deltoid muscle (AP) and the posterior point of the deltoid muscle (PP) on the surface. The midpoint between the AP and PP was used as the origin point (OP). The line connecting the OP and the lowest point of the deltoid tuberosi

Upper extremity reconstruction is most often encountered in trauma patients. Although the rate of complications from elective orthopedic procedures remains relatively low, these complications are oftentimes in the form of open joints or joint infections that can be devastating. Classically, wounds of the shoulder girdle have been treated with large muscles such as the pectoralis major, pectoralis minor, and latissimus dorsi. Flaps more local to the area including the deltoid muscle flap have been overlooked due to their small size. Despite its size, the anterior deltoid can be used for shoulde

Morphologic and internal topographic features of the axillary nerve were studied in 40 cadaveric shoulders to provide anatomic data for selective neurotization of the deltoid muscle in axillary nerve injury. The axillary nerve can be divided into three segments. Proximal to the subscapularis muscle, the axillary nerve is a single nerve trunk. Nerve fascicles to the deltoid muscle are identified at its lateral part. In front of the subscapularis muscle, the axillary nerve forms into the lateral and medial fasciculi groups. Distal to the subscapularis muscle, the nerve divides into anterior and

Three cases of a previously undescribed condition of idiopathic, non-progressive deltoid muscle contracture are reported. The clinical features are presented as also the management of the cases. Intra-operative appearance of the fibrotic band responsible for the pathology is described. The relevant literature is reviewed. Though such cases are rare, they show striking features which enable them to be distinguished from other causes of scapular winging. Surgical excision of the band confers lasting correction of the deformity.

Authors report in connection with two cases, operated on with an operative procedure rather rare in the practice in this country. The deltoid paralysis, developed following the injury of the axillary nerve, was successfully treated with the transposition of the bony insertion of the trapezius muscle to the proximal part of the humerus.

Objective: Although the indications for reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) are expanding, an improvement in muscle strength in each patient following RSA remains unclear. The objective was to investigate whether or not improvement in muscle strength for shoulder elevation in patients who underwent RSA was influenced by pre- or postoperative deltoid muscle stiffness measured using shear wave elastography (SWE). Methods: Sixty-five patients who underwent RSA over a 12-month follow-up period were included. Patient characteristics and clinical and radiologic measurements were recorded. Preoperati

INTRODUCTION: The innervation pattern of the clavicular head of the deltoid muscle and its corresponding topography was investigated via cadaveric dissection in the present study, focusing on the lateral pectoral nerve.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-eight upper extremities were dissected and the nerve supplies to the deltoid muscle and the variability of the lateral pectoral and axillary nerves, including their topographical patterns, were noted.
RESULTS: The clavicular portion of the deltoid muscle received a deltoid branch from the lateral pectoral nerve in 86.2% of cases. Two topographical

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Camptocormia is a marked anterior curvature of the thoracolumbar spine that may be caused by parkinsonism, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), myasthenia gravis (MG) and muscle disease. The interest of a systematic muscle biopsy has not been evaluated until now. In our study, the aim was to prospectively evaluate the proportion of patients with isolated camptocormia without ALS, MG and parkinsonism who have an underlying myopathy.
METHODS: Twenty consecutive patients (75% female, mean age 70 years) with isolated camptocormia were enrolled in a single centre in this 5-

Hydatid cyst is seen an endemic disease in many countries in the world. Cysts arising from Echinococcus granulosis occur most commonly in the liver and secondly in the lungs. Primary cystic involvement in the musculoskeletal system without lung or liver involvement is very rare. Treatment consists of surgical resection. Anthelmintic medication before and after surgery can be used. In this article, we present a very rare case of 29-year-old female with hydatid cyst involving shoulder, starting from subcutaneous tissue and extending up to the deltoid muscle. The patient was managed with surgical

BACKGROUND: Several authors have defined a variety of so-called safe zones for deltoid-splitting incisions. The first aim of the present study was to investigate the distance of the axillary nerve from the acromion and its relation to arm length. The second aim was to identify a safe area for the axillary nerve during surgical dissection of the deltoid muscle.
METHODS: Twenty-four shoulders of embalmed adult cadavers were included in the study. The distance from the anterior edge of the acromion to the course of the axillary nerve was measured and was recorded as the anterior distance. The sa

Recurrent traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation results in soft tissues lesions around the glenohumeral joint. The subscapularis muscle is a major active stabilizer of the shoulder and the hypothesis of the current study is that one would expect pathologic changes within its substance secondary to the trauma. A histomorphometric study of the subscapularis muscle was done of 52 patients operated on for recurrent traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation. At the time of surgery biopsy specimens were taken of the subscapularis muscle and the ipsilateral deltoid muscle as a comparison and to see i

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: For recording the compound muscle action potential (CMAP) of the deltoid muscle, the reference electrode over the acromion (Ac) has been used to avoid contamination of responses from other arm muscles to the distal tendon (DT). A recent article recommended the sternum (St) as the reference electrode. In this study, we aimed to find the appropriate reference site for the deltoid CMAP.
METHODS: Subjects were 12 healthy volunteers. The deltoid CMAP was recorded using Ac, St and DT references. CMAPs of the biceps brachii (BB) and triceps brachii (TB) were also recorded. In addi

OBJECTIVE: To describe the MRI features of deltoid tears and to evaluate tear characteristics in patient groups based on history of trauma and rotator cuff tear (RCT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The records of patients who underwent shoulder MRI at our institution between July 2007 and June 2018 were retrospectively reviewed to identify deltoid tears, and patients were divided into groups based on history of recent trauma and presence of RCT. Images were reviewed to identify the location and size of the deltoid tear; the presence or absence of RCT, muscle atrophy, tendon retraction, humeral head

In extensive rotator cuff tears with rupture of the supra- and infraspinatus muscles, we have obtained good and very good results persisting for 3 years or longer only in 40% of cases treated by resection and debridement, and in 25% of our cases the head of the humerus was found to be no longer centrally located in the joint socket on X-ray examination 10 years after treatment. It was therefore proposed that an active muscle flap taken from the anterior part of the deltoid muscle (part III according to Fick) should be used to span the trophic defect in the rotator cuff, being sutured into heal

Heterotopic ossification (HO), a well-known sequela of trauma, burns, head injury, and certain congenital or acquired metabolic conditions, has a predilection for the hip and the elbow. This disease has uncommonly been found after elective open shoulder surgery but extremely seldom after minimally invasive surgery. In our search of the peer-reviewed literature, we found no reports of HO after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. The clinical importance of heterotopic bone after shoulder surgery remains unclear because of inconsistent definitions, varying correlations of symptom severity and radio

BACKGROUND: Objective radiological predictors of sedation requirement during closed reduction of anterior shoulder dislocation have not been clearly established. This study aimed to evaluate the association between humeral head displacement parameters and computed tomography (CT)-based deltoid muscle morphology and attenuation with sedation requirement.
METHODS: A total of 467 patients presenting with anterior shoulder dislocation between May 2020 and February 2026 were retrospectively screened, and 213 patients were included after applying exclusion criteria. Closed reduction was performed w

BACKGROUND: Open repair can be more useful than arthroscopic repair for immobile and severely retracted, large to massive rotator cuff tears. However, it is not known whether the deltoid muscle is altered after open repair or to what extent the deltoid origin remains detached after surgery.
PURPOSE: To compare postoperative alterations of the deltoid muscle in open versus arthroscopic repair for severely retracted, large to massive rotator cuff tears.
STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: Enrolled in this study were 135 patients who underwent surgical repair for s

PURPOSE: To describe the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearances of tears of the deltoid muscle and tendon in patients with rotator cuff tears and without a prior history of shoulder surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Deltoid tears diagnosed on MR examinations were prospectively recorded between February 2003 through June 2004. The images of these patients were then retrospectively reviewed to determine the location of the deltoid tear, the presence of rotator cuff tears, tendon retraction, muscle atrophy, degree of humeral head subluxation, bony erosive changes involving the undersurface o
