Maternal Depression across Early Childhood: Similarities and Differences across Three Liberal Democracies.

Women who parent report higher rates of depression than others. Research frames this around postpartum depression, yet many continue to report symptoms well beyond the postpartum period. Using data from three nationally representative birth cohort studies (N = 31,514), we investigate how women's depressive symptoms unfold across children's early life. We compare trajectories across countries that provide limited but different family supports that might matter to mothers' health. Finally, we consider whether maternal characteristics moderate these differences. Using within and between growth cu

Democracy under uncertainty: the wisdom of crowds and the free-rider problem in group decision making.

We introduce a game theory model of individual decisions to cooperate by contributing personal resources to group decisions versus by free riding on the contributions of other members. In contrast to most public-goods games that assume group returns are linear in individual contributions, the present model assumes decreasing marginal group production as a function of aggregate individual contributions. This diminishing marginal returns assumption is more realistic and generates starkly different predictions compared to the linear model. One important implication is that, under most conditions,

Epidemic neuropathy in Cuba: a public health problem related to the Cuban Democracy Act of the United States.

In 1992, the USA embargo on Cuba was tightened through the passage of the Cuban Democracy Act (CDA) that explicitly restricts food and medical supplies. The embargo has contributed to cause a number of public health problems in Cuba including: (1) an epidemic of more than 50,000 cases of optic and peripheral neuropathies in 1992-1993, resulting from dietary deficiency; (2) an epidemic of esophageal stenoses in toddlers who inadvertently drank liquid lye as a result of a soap shortage for which liquid lye was substituted; (3) an outbreak of Guillain-Barré syndrome in Havana, in June and July 19

When democracies coerce their health professionals: institutional constraints and policy outcomes across four jurisdictions.

BACKGROUND: Coercive health workforce policy-the use of legal mechanisms to compel professional compliance in ways that override established processes of negotiation, consent, or collective bargaining-has been deployed repeatedly by governments in high-income democracies through statutory wage controls, contract imposition, employment restructuring, and disciplinary orders backed by license sanctions. The conditions under which such policies achieve or fail to achieve their stated objectives remain poorly understood. METHODS: We conducted a comparative case study of four jurisdictions (South

Framing HIV and AIDS in competitive authoritarian democracies. Case study of the print press in Mozambique, 1986-2020.

Mozambique has the sixth highest prevalence of HIV in the world and ranks fourth in new infections. The government-owned print press Notícias has played an important role in the social construction of HIV and AIDS in the country as it was entrusted with the role of disseminating HIV and AIDS information to the public since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country in 1986. Using Notícias' articles and frame analysis perspective, the article analyses the way Notícias has framed HIV and AIDS in the country since the late 1980s. The choice of media results from the fact that the way a phenomeno

What motivates citizens to participate in health democracy concerning end of life? Lessons from a citizen's convention in France.

In December 2022, under the aegis of the French government, 184 citizens were randomly drawn to address the issue of assisted dying within a Citizen's Convention. Discussions from this type of assembly can reveal gaps or shortcomings in existing policies and thereby strengthen the legitimacy of public health decisions, in this case regarding palliative care. We investigated what motivated these citizens to participate in this health democracy exercise. We conducted a study during the first phase of the Convention (held from December 2022 to January 2023). We collected data through a questionna

Political grief and ambiguous loss in a threatened democracy: psychological distress and civic responses during Israel's judicial reform.

BACKGROUND: Political transitions can have profound mental health effects, yet political grief remains underexplored. Drawing on ambiguous loss and grief theory, this study examined how perceived democratic backsliding during Israel's 2023 judicial reform affected psychological distress and civic engagement. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 453 Israeli adults opposing the reform. Measures included political ambiguous loss (PAL), political grief (adapted PG-13 scale), psychological distress (DASS-21), political efficacy, and protest participation. RESULTS: 64.9% of partici

Race/color functional limitation disparities in a "racial democracy": findings among middle-aged and older adults in Brazil.

OBJECTIVES: Brazil is rapidly aging and expected to have increased rates of functional limitation. While some literature has analyzed race/color functional limitation disparities, no documented research has examined such disparities between age groups that lived through Brazil's different political regimes. Guided by a life course perspective, we examine this research gap. METHODS: We used wave 1 (2015-2016) data (n = 8,980) from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study on Aging to examine race/color disparities in difficulty with mobility, episodic memory, near vision, and hearing. We computed age g

Democracy, gender equality, advanced civil rights, economic welfare, and equitable distribution of wealth are related to the success of tobacco control.

INTRODUCTION: It is well known that there are many social and economic factors influencing tobacco use. There are very few studies addressing these aspects of the issue. Nevertheless, smoking is closely related to social, economic, cultural, and political factors. This study aims to present the aspects of the MPOWER application that should be expanded in order to achieve a more effective tobacco control policy. METHODS: Thirty-one countries were included in this secondary data analysis. The smoking prevalence of the countries in 2020 and the changes in smoking prevalence between 2010 and 2020

Depressed democracy, environmental injustice: Exploring the negative mental health implications of unconventional oil and gas production in the United States.

Unconventional oil and gas (UOG) production has rapidly expanded, making the U.S. the top producer of hydrocarbons. The industrial process now pushes against neighborhoods, schools, and people's daily lives. I analyze extensive mixed methods data collected over three years in Colorado - including 75 in-depth interviews and additional participant observation - to show how living amid industrial UOG production generates chronic stress and negative mental health outcomes, such as self-reported depression. I show how UOG production has become a neighborhood industrial activity that, in turn, acts

Trends in views of democracy and society and support for political violence in the USA, 2022-2024: findings from a nationally representative survey.

BACKGROUND: In 2022, a nationally representative longitudinal survey in the USA found concerningly high prevalences of support for and personal willingness to engage in political violence, but those prevalences decreased in 2023. This study examines changes in those prevalences from 2023 to 2024, an election year in the USA. METHODS: Participants were members of Ipsos KnowledgePanel. Wave 3 of the survey was conducted May 23-June 14, 2024; invitations to participate were sent to all respondents to prior waves who remained in KnowledgePanel. Outcome measures concern justification for the use o

Mobilizing civil society for the HIV treatment cascade: a global analysis on democracy and its association with people living with HIV who know their status.

INTRODUCTION: Civil society organizations (CSOs) play an essential role in the global HIV/AIDS response. Past studies have described the beneficial role of CSOs in meeting the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) 90-90-90 target, but have not explored how political conditions, which influence the ability of CSOs to organize, have an impact on the cascade. This study explores the relationship between measures of democracy and its association with diagnosis rates among people living with HIV (PLHIV). METHODS: This study analyses 2016 data derived from the Economist Intelligence Unit's

Testing a Deliberative Democracy Engagement Intervention to Increase Guideline-Concordance Among Oral Health Providers: Results from the DISGO Cluster-Randomized, Stepped-Wedge Trial.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries affects billions worldwide and in the U.S. is among the most prevalent noncommunicable diseases in both children and adults. Early in the caries process, it can be arrested by dental sealants, which are non-invasive and thus tooth sparing, however, few dentists have adopted this approach. Deliberative engagement processes enable participants to engage with diverse perspectives on a policy issue and develop and share with policy makers informed opinions about the policy issue. We examined the effects of a deliberative engagement process on the ability of oral health pr

Party affiliation, political ideology, views on democracy and society, and support for political violence in the United States of America: findings from a nationally representative survey.

BACKGROUND: Recent research in the United States has found concerning levels of support for and willingness to engage in political violence and for extreme beliefs linked to violence. Associations between political party affiliation and political ideology and these levels of support have not been quantified. METHODS: Cross-sectional nationally representative survey conducted May 13 to June 2, 2022, of adult members of the Ipsos KnowledgePanel. Primary outcomes concerned support for and personal willingness to engage in political violence, presented as prevalences (weighted to achieve represen

From morphology of human body to reshaping a morphology of the society: heritage in the field of pathology of infectious diseases of Wilhelm Ebstein and work of councilman Sigismund Asch. A story how to counteract epidemics and to transform feudal system into civil democracy.

Collected, primary resources enabled us to extract data that are scarcely present in medical literature of the two Breslauer morphologists of both the human body and - metaphorically - the society: Wilhelm Ebstein (1836-1912) and Sigismund Asch (1825-1901), particularly the latter, who described morphology of melanosis in his doctoral dissertation in 1846, to switch on reshaping social morphology of Wrocław (Breslau) in Virchow-like manner. In contrast to the main perspective of Ebstein's anomaly that has been finely described in past biographical papers, a primary aspect of infectious disease

How Bioethicists Can Contribute to Democratic Deliberation.

It is sometimes suggested that policymaking on bioethical questions should be more democratic, either through direct popular participation (as in a referendum) or through improved forms of representation (such as random mini-publics or elected officials). Such proposals seem to leave no special place for input from bioethicists. This paper argues that it is not contrary to democracy to give bioethicists additional influence over relevant policy areas. First, while referenda, mini-publics, or electoral representation may be more democratic in some respects, these processes also have limitations

Transitions that Matter? Czechoslovakia's Break up and Human Stature.

Changes in a population's average stature are virtuous pointers of wellbeing which are sensitive to improvements in psychosocial environments during childhood. A major structural change that could have altered an environment during childhood is the transition from communist to a liberal democracy, and, more specifically, the meltdown of the Soviet bloc provides for a quasi-natural experiment. This paper examines the trends in heights in the Czech Republic and Slovakia before and after the transition and the subsequent break-up of the Czechoslovakian federation. We find that one additional year

Regime Type and Data Manipulation: Evidence from the COVID-19 Pandemic.

CONTEXT: This study examines whether autocratic governments are more likely than democratic governments to manipulate health data. The COVID-19 pandemic presents a unique opportunity for examining this question because of its global impact. METHODS: Three distinct indicators of COVID-19 data manipulation were constructed for nearly all sovereign states. Each indicator was then regressed on democracy and controls for unintended misreporting. A machine learning approach was then used to determine whether any of the specific features of democracy are more predictive of manipulation. FINDINGS: D

The old book switcheroo: or anatomy of a delusion.

In this paper, an aging baby boomer "tells all" about his personal experience with some of the "pitfalls of organized religion," as observed from his somewhat unusual perspective as a Jew by birth and a Roman Catholic by choice, and a lifelong Asperger's sufferer, the butt of practical jokes in a variety of juvenile and adult settings. His conclusion, echoing H.L. Mencken's famous statement that "the cure for the evils of democracy is more democracy," is that the best antidote to these "pitfalls" may be found simply in the responsible practice of religion, including both Judaism and Christiani
