Dilated Composite Odontoma also known as Dens invaginatus, "dens in dente", or "tooth within tooth" is a rare dental anomaly resulting from enamel organ infolding during tooth development, often leading to complications like caries and pulp infection. With a prevalence of 7.45%, it commonly affects upper lateral incisors, predominantly as a Type I morphology. Mesiodens, a supernumerary tooth in the anterior maxillary midline, occurs in 89.7% of single cases and 10.3% of bilateral cases. The coexistence of dens invaginatus in a mesiodens is extremely rare, posing diagnostic and treatment challe…

Dental invagination or dens in dente is a rare malformation with a widely varied morphology. Radiographically, the affected tooth shows an infolding of the enamel and dentin that can extend to within the pulp cavity and the root and sometimes to the root apex. It can occur in both primary and permanent teeth, and its prevalence is reported to be 1.7% to 10%. The dental anomalies observed in association with dental invagination include taurodontia, microdontia, supernumerary teeth, gemination, and dentinogenesis imperfecta. This article presents a clinical case in which a radiographic finding c…

A rare case of the Ekman-Westborg-Julin syndrome in a 15-year-old boy is presented. The patient had general macrodontia with gigantic mandibular third molars. Other dental anomalies, such as peak-shaped cuspids, central cusps, dens in dente, multituberculism, and single conical molar roots, were also present.

Dens invaginatus, commonly known as dens in dente, is a developmental malformation of teeth that most commonly affects permanent maxillary lateral incisors. Deciduous teeth are infrequently affected. Presence of dens invaginatus in mandibular permanent teeth is extremely uncommon. A rare presentation of coronal double dens invaginatus incidentally detected in a mandibular canine tooth on radiographic examination is being reported, along with a discussion of this anomaly. The patient had presented for routine dental treatment unrelated to this finding. In addition, the various radiographic appe…

Dens invaginatus is a rare malformation of teeth, showing a broad spectrum of morphological variations. A genetical determination cannot be excluded. The incidence of dental invaginations cannot be determined exactly, the data from different investigations range from 0.25% to 10%. The majority of epidemiological studies present an incidence of more than 2%. Most affected are maxillary lateral incisors, bilateral occurrence is not uncommon (43%). The aetiology of dens invaginatus is still not entirely known. Most probably the invagination has its origin in a deep folding of the foramen caecum d

BACKGROUND: Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis is a heterogeneous group of disorders, leading to intrahepatic cholestasis, with the possibility of chronic liver failure and biliary cirrhosis. Oligodontia is either the manifestation of a specific syndrome or is non-syndromic. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of type 3 progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis and concurrent oligodontia, craniosynostosis, dens in dente, taurodontism, and delayed permanent dentition in the medical and dental literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the dental and medica…

Dens in dente, also known as dens invaginatus and dilated compound odontoma, is a malformation that can occur on primary, permanent, or supernumerary teeth that is characterized by a deep invagination of the surface of a crown or root covered with enamel. This abnormality in tooth morphology generally affect the maxillary lateral incisors but several cases of multiple dens invaginatus have been reported in the literature. A 15 year-old female patient is reported here presenting five dens invaginatus: four in the permanent mandibular incisors and one in the permanent, maxillary left central inc…

This paper describes a rare case of erupted double supernumerary teeth with unusual morphology in a 14-year-old patient with an eating disorder. The coexistence of dental morphological anomalies: multilobed mesiodens, multiple dens in dente of different types and root dilaceration have not been previously reported. The paper highlights anatomical and radiological aspects of dental abnormalities and clinical implications of delayed treatment.

Out of a total of 21 exencephalic p53-deficient embryonic and newborn mice, 6 (28.6%) possessed fused maxillary incisor teeth. On histological analysis of the 5 examples seen on day 19.5 of gestation and newborn mice, 3 varieties were observed: an example of 'simple' fusion, 3 examples of simple fusion each of which contained a 'dens in dente' ('tooth within a tooth'), and a single example in which the fused teeth were associated with a median supernumerary incisor tooth which, while deeply indenting the labial surface of the fused teeth, was in all locations a completely separate unit. 3-D re…

Wilson's disease (WD) is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disease that affects copper metabolism. Anomalies can be seen in the dento-maxillofacial structures of WD patients. Dens invaginatus (DI) is an uncommon tooth anomaly, and its incidence in decidious and permanent molars is even lower. This case report primarily explored the multiple DI of a patient with WD. A 9-year-old boy was admitted to our clinic with complaints of pain and swelling in the right lower molar area. It was learnt that the patient was diagnosed with WD after he was born. Fistula, submandibular lymphadenopathy and diff

Variation in size, form and morphology of the teeth result in anomalies such as macrodontia, microdontia, hyperdontia, hypodontia, double tooth, taurodontism and dens in dente. While traits that may occur more commonly in certain ethnic groups may be considered to be specific to that population. The characteristics of these anomalies and traits are presented along with the prevalence figures for their occurrence in primary dentition of southern Chinese.

Dens invaginatus is a dental anomaly resulting in an abnormal tooth morphology, most commonly affecting the permanent dentition. An associated infolding of the outer enamel organ results in structural pocketing and increased susceptibility to dental disease. Clinical sequalae of affected teeth may include dental caries, pulpal pathology, devitalisation, discolouration, localised periodontal pocketing or increased tooth mobility. Early diagnosis is therefore essential in the delivery of effective prevention and informed treatment planning. Clinicians should be aware of the diverse clinical and

INTRODUCTION: Dens invaginatus (dens in dente) is a developmental malformation resulting from an invagination of enamel organ into the dental papilla, beginning at the crown and sometimes extending into the root before calcification occurs. Dilated odontome is the most extreme form of dens invaginatus and it is extremely rare in the posterior mandible.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 47 years old female patient with occasional episodes of diffuse pain and discomfort in the left posterior mandibular region. The extra-oral examination showed slight facial asymmetry. Panoramic and intra-oral X-rays show…

The occurrence of bilateral dens invaginatus in the supernumerary teeth is rare. In the patient described in this report the supernumerary teeth were palatally impacted. The tip of one tooth had emerged through the palatal mucosa, and this tooth had pulpal and periapical infection. Both were extracted.

An otherwise healthy young caucasian Australian was referred because of the unusual radiographic appearance of a maxillary permanent incisor. The tooth was found to have an enlarged crown with palatal cusp and dens invaginatus. Over five years' follow-up the tooth showed no signs of pulp necrosis. The major problem was the correction of the patient's esthetics as he approached adulthood.

Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has emerged as a reliable bioactive material with extended applications in endodontics that include the obt … clude retreatment, obturation combined with root-end resection, apexification, internal resorption, dens in dente, and in conventional endodontic therapy. The review introduces clinicians to an alternative treatment strategy that might improve the healing outcomes for patients presenting with complex and challenging endodontic conditions.
