Understanding trichloroethylene chemisorption to iron surfaces using density functional theory.

This research investigated the thermodynamic favorability and resulting structures for chemical adsorption of trichloroethylene (TCE) to metallic iron using periodic density functional theory (DFT). Three initial TCE positions having the plane defined by HCC atoms parallel to the iron surface resulted in formation of three different chemisorption complexes between carbon atoms in TCE and the iron surface. The Cl-bridge initial configuration with the HCC plane of TCE perpendicular to the iron surface did not result in C-Fe bond formation. The most energetically favorable complex formed at the C

Asymmetric Dimethylarginine Vibrational Spectroscopy Spectra and Density Functional Theory Model.

NG, NG-dimethylarginine (ADMA) is an endogenous compound that acts as a competitive inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), thereby reducing nitric oxide (NO) production and contributing to endothelial dysfunction. This dysfunction plays a pivotal role in the development of various pathological conditions, including cardiovascular disease, chronic renal failure, and diabetes. The diminished bioavailability of NO is a critical factor in the progression of these disorders, and alterations in ADMA levels have emerged as significant predictors of cardiovascular events and mortality. In this stud

Chirality-Induced Spin Selectivity: Analysis of Density Functional Theory Calculations.

Chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS), which was demonstrated in several molecular and material systems, has drawn much interest recently. The phenomenon, described in electron transport by the difference in the transport rate of electrons of opposite spins through a chiral system, is however not fully understood. Herein, we employed density functional theory in conjunction with spin-orbit coupling to evaluate the percent spin-polarization in a device setup with finite electrodes at zero bias, using an electron transport program developed in-house. To study the interface effects and the le

Gas Adsorption on the Co2Te3 Monolayer: Density Functional Theory Study.

We report a numerical investigation of the chemical adsorption of acetone and carbon dioxide gases by a cobalt telluride (III) 2D layer. Calculations were performed using first principles calculations within the density functional theory to evaluate the adsorbed gas impact on the material's conductivity. The adsorption of carbon dioxide was found to significantly affect the Co2Te3 monolayer electronic structure and its electrical conductivity, which is not observed in the case of acetone. This letter demonstrates that the calculated bond formation energy for carbon dioxide is approximately 2 t

Noncovalent Interactions in Density Functional Theory: All the Charge Density We Do Not See.

Exact determination of the electronic density of molecules and materials would provide direct access to accurate bonded and nonbonded interatomic interactions via the Hellman-Feynman theorem. However, density-functional approximations (DFAs)─the workhorse methods for the electronic structure of atomistic systems─only provide approximate and sometimes unreliable electron densities. In this work, we demonstrate that long-range van der Waals (vdW) dispersion interactions can induce significant polarization in the electron density, with the magnitude of effect growing with system size. We evaluate

Computational Study of Pristine, Al- and P-Doped B12N12 Nanocages for BrCN Adsorption and Detection under Electrostatic Fields Using Density Functional Theory, Time-Dependent-Density Functional Theory, and Reduced Density Gradient.

This study presents a comprehensive computational investigation of the adsorption and sensing potential of pristine and doped B12N12 nanocages B12N12, AlB11N12, and B12N11P toward cyanogen bromide (BrCN), a highly toxic gas. Equilibrium structures of the BrCN complexes are optimized at the ωB97XD/6-31 G (d, p) level, and adsorption energies, thermodynamic parameters (ΔH, ΔG), and electronic descriptors are calculated. Interaction analyses are performed using atoms in molecules, reduced density gradient, molecular electrostatic potential, and electron localization function approaches. The effec

Electronic structure of strongly correlated systems: recent developments in multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory and multiconfiguration nonclassical-energy functional theory.

Strong electron correlation plays an important role in transition-metal and heavy-metal chemistry, magnetic molecules, bond breaking, biradicals, excited states, and many functional materials, but it provides a significant challenge for modern electronic structure theory. The treatment of strongly correlated systems usually requires a multireference method to adequately describe spin densities and near-degeneracy correlation. However, quantitative computation of dynamic correlation with multireference wave functions is often difficult or impractical. Multiconfiguration pair-density functional

Density functional estimations of Heisenberg exchange constants in oligonuclear magnetic compounds: Assessment of density functional theory versus ab initio.

Modern density functionals were assessed for the calculation of magnetic exchange constants of academic hydrogen oligomer systems. Full-configuration interaction magnetic exchange constants and wavefunctions are taken as references for several H(n) model systems with different geometrical distributions from Ciofini et al. [Chem. Phys. 309, 133 (2005)]. Regression analyses indicate that hybrid functionals (B3LYP, O3LYP, and PBE0) rank among the best ones with a slope of typically 0.5, i.e., 100% overestimation with a standard error of about 50 cm(-1). The efficiency of the highly ranked functio

Revisiting the Classification of Physisorption Isotherms with Classical Density Functional Theory.

Understanding the mechanisms of gas adsorption/desorption and liquid intrusion constitutes a fundamental field that spans physics, chemistry, and engineering and leads to applied problems, such as the characterization of porous materials and porosimetry. The physisorption of gases is typically analyzed at constant temperature for various pressures, and the corresponding isotherms have been classified in standard IUPAC reports, mainly based on empirical considerations. We use classical density functional theory (DFT) to predict the microscopic structure of confined fluids and determine physisor

Density functional theory calculations on Mössbauer parameters of nonheme iron nitrosyls.

Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations on transition metal nitrosyls often reveal unusual spin density profiles, involving substantial spatial separation of majority and minority spin densities. Against this context, there is a significant lack of studies where DFT calculations have been quantitatively calibrated against experimental spectroscopic properties. Reported herein are DFT calculations of Mössbauer isomer shifts and quadrupole splittings for 21 nonheme iron complexes (26 distinct iron sites) including 9 iron nitrosyls. Low- (S = 1/2) and high-spin (S = 3/2) {FeNO}(7) complexes,

Delta-Augmented Subsystem Density Functional Theory: A Study Across Diverse Systems.

In this study, we expand upon and benchmark the Kim-Gordon method (KG), a subsystem density functional theory (DFT) approach appended with a machine-learned correction to compensate for errors in the kinetic energy term and thereby match Kohn-Sham (KS) DFT accuracy. This correction is obtained through 'delta- learning' based on KS-DFT data. The method promises sampling of configurations for condensed molecular systems at the Kohn-Sham DFT level of accuracy at a fraction of the computational cost. Despite encouraging results for liquid water, it was not obvious whether the scheme had more gener

A density functional theory benchmark on antioxidant-related properties of polyphenols.

In this work, we present a density functional theory benchmark on antioxidant-related properties for a series of six polyphenols that are well-known antioxidants: caffeic acid, cyanidin, ellagic acid, gallic acid, myricetin, and phloretin. Computations on the 24 O-H bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs) and 6 ionization potentials (IPs) were performed using twenty-three exchange-correlation functionals combined with four different basis sets in the gas-phase, water, and methanol; calibration against the Domain-based Local Pair Natural Orbital CCSD(T) (DLPNO-CCSD(T)) approach was employed. Minimum-Energy Conical Intersections by Compressed Multistate Pair-Density Functional Theory.

Compressed multistate pair-density functional theory (CMS-PDFT) is a multistate version of multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory that can capture the correct topology of coupled potential energy surfaces (PESs) around conical intersections. In this work, we develop interstate coupling vectors (ISCs) for CMS-PDFT in the OpenMolcas and PySCF/mrh electronic structure packages. Yet, the main focus of this work is using ISCs to calculate minimum-energy conical intersections (MECIs) by CMS-PDFT. This is performed using the projected constrained optimization method in OpenMolcas, which us

Quantum-electrodynamical time-dependent density functional theory within Gaussian atomic basis.

Inspired by the formulation of quantum-electrodynamical time-dependent density functional theory (QED-TDDFT) by Rubio and co-workers [Flick et al., ACS Photonics 6, 2757-2778 (2019)], we propose an implementation that uses dimensionless amplitudes for describing the photonic contributions to QED-TDDFT electron-photon eigenstates. This leads to a Hermitian QED-TDDFT coupling matrix that is expected to facilitate the future development of analytic derivatives. Through a Gaussian atomic basis implementation of the QED-TDDFT method, we examined the effect of dipole self-energy, rotating-wave appro

Intrinsic nucleofugality scale within the framework of density functional reactivity theory.

Nucleofugality is a measure of the quality of a leaving group in substitution and elimination reactions. In a conceptual DFT context, the nucleofugality is calculated for an elaborate set of common organic leaving groups, both in the gas phase and in two organic solvents (dichloromethane and methanol). An intrinsic nucleofugality scale is constructed showing fair agreement with the classical trends in leaving group capacity in organic chemistry. The correlation of the results with acidities (tabulated pK(a) values) on one hand and experimental solvolysis reaction rate constants (kinetic parame

Wavefunction theory and density functional theory analysis of ground and excited electronic states of TaB and WB.

Several low-lying electronic states of TaB and WB molecules were studied using ab initio multireference configuration interaction (MRCI), Davidson corrected MRCI (MRCI+Q), and coupled cluster singles doubles and perturbative triples [CCSD(T)] methods. Their full potential energy curves (PECs), equilibrium electron configurations, equilibrium bond distances (res), dissociation energies (Des), excitation energies (Tes), harmonic vibrational frequencies (ωes), and anharmonicities (ωexes) are reported. Zero-field splitting parameters within exact two-component theory and modern density functional theory using seminumerical integration.

An efficient implementation of zero-field splitting parameters based on the work of Schmitt et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 134, 194113 (2011)] is presented. Seminumerical integration techniques are used for the two-electron spin-dipole contribution and the response equations of the spin-orbit perturbation. The original formulation is further generalized. First, it is extended to meta-generalized gradient approximations and local hybrid functionals. For these functional classes, the response of the paramagnetic current density is considered in the coupled-perturbed Kohn-Sham equations for the spin-orbi

Density functional theory predictions of derivative thermodynamic properties of a confined fluid.

Fluids in nanopores are of importance for many engineering applications, including energy storage in supercapacitors, hydrocarbon recovery from unconventional sources, or water desalination. Thermodynamic properties of fluids confined in nanopores differ from the properties of the same fluids in bulk. Density functional theory (DFT) has been widely used for modeling the thermodynamics of confined fluids. However, it is rarely used for calculations of derivative thermodynamic properties. Here, we use a rather simple DFT model for argon based on the Percus-Yevick equation and show that with stan

Nonadiabatic dynamics with intersystem crossings: A time-dependent density functional theory implementation.

In this work, we derive a method to perform trajectory-based nonadiabatic dynamics that is able to describe both nonadiabatic transitions and intersystem crossing events (transitions between states of different spin-multiplicity) at the same level of theory, namely, time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). To this end, we combined our previously developed TDDFT-based trajectory surface hopping scheme with an accurate and efficient algorithm for the calculation of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) matrix elements. More specifically, we designed two algorithms for the calculation of intersy
